Landed my first job as a freelancer offering subtitling and translation service today so here I am trying to learn everything about the job title and what the proper mindset is for taking on the tasks. I was able to apply through a job posting online, took the test and to my surprise I passed. I didn't know anything about subtitling until now and have little knowledge in translation although I'm pretty fluent in my native language. Thank you so much for sharing and I'm definitely binge watching your videos to learn more! Though a little bit anxious, I'm looking forward to learning more about this skill and how I can build a career from it.
I mainly work as a subtitler these days. That was a really good overview, but I think you meant to say "2 lines per subtitle". Two per frame would be really quick! Also another good rule is the subtitle gap rule. 2-4 frames between each subtitle or 80-120 ms.
Another very good video Adrian! In my MSc I did half of my translation portfolio on subtitling TED talks and it's so much fun - though it does require a very long time, especially if the speakers are super speedy (as it is the case with Italian). Another rule I learned, and please correct me if I am wrong, is that you italicise what someone is saying if they're not in frame. So for example if it's a phone call, what the person we don't see says speaking through the phone would be italicised. I really enjoying subtitling and currently do offer this service, though I'm just starting out and haven't had any clients yet. Fingers crossed I will get some work with subtitling as I really enjoy it and got super positive feedback from the videos I subtitled at uni. In the meanwhile I'll keep on practicing and improving.
Hi Arianna thanks so much for the feedback, really appreciate it! And yes, you are right! Just looked it up and you can definitely use italics for that :) thanks for letting me know. Good luck with building your career and let me know if I can help you with anything.

Just found your videos today. Thank you for the help. I decided to write subtitles for an Aditoro (Swiss TH-camr) video into English for practice. But I need to figure out this subtitling software. We’ll see if I have success. I’ll keep my day job for now.
That's the thing though, it's really not that hard :D anyone can do that, just needs creativity, determination and a bit of luck to get into the good spots. But the entry barriers are really low actually in this profession, that's what I'm trying to portray with these videos as well :)
Hi Mateus, thanks for the support! Sometimes I do use Trados, but I prefer not to. Some agencies like the video workflow in CAT tools and for them I use it. But usually I use Subtitle Edit.
Hi Adrian! Thank you for this excellent video, it's really helpful! I've got a question on subtitling: when we need to add text such as the appellation of the speakers or the banner appearing in the video, how should we do that? I found out it's impossible to just add it as normal subtitles before the speakers actually speak (not enough gap & problem with char/sec). Are there any certain guidelines on that? Thank you very much in advance for any tip!
Haha oh dear a Swiss German video, don't know if I want to subject my channel to that :D but some Swiss German related content is definitely coming soon :)
Thank you for this video. I was always curious about how subtitles were done. This technique seems to require considerable time and effort, but it does look like fun. Just a side note: since you mentioned that words should not be broken in a sentence to keep them grammatically correct, in this example wouldn’t it preferable to have “welcome back” in the first line? Just asking…:) Thank you!
THANK YOU ADRIAN! I am currently getting some training online with GOSUB Pro PLUS. Once I am finished, do you have any suggestions for next steps? Thanks again!
Hi Maria, thank you so much for your kind words and for supporting the channel. That means a lot! Do you have experience in translation or other services in the language industry and are now expanding to subtitling? Or are you going straight into the subtitling genre? That is an important distinction, because if you already have clients as a translator, you'd be surprised how many of them also need subtitlers. So as a first step, I'd let your clients know that you also offer this service. If you don't have previous clients, then I'd look for media and publishing houses. Especially in the north of europe, there are a bunch of them. It depends on your language pair of course, but if you have a relatively common language, it is likely that streaming services like hulu, hbo, netflix etc. need your service. Another approach is looking for companies that have subsidiaries in multilingual countries. A lot of Swiss companies for examples need their video content in many different languages because they have employees in different language regions. So every training video, every info sessions needs to be subtitled. In order to gain experience in the field, I would probably do volunteer work for your favourite youtubers or charity organisations. That's a great way to build up a portfolio.
Great effort. Many thanks. Could you please make us a video about typology of subtitles in detail? That would be highly appreciated! :)) I read about subtitles types in the book you've already mentioned but I can't sort out all of them and there is not much about subtitles in books out there.
Thx a lot. Im preparing for my first job as subtitler, and I discover how big and fascinating is this topic. I maded notes from your vid and will try to use this information. Is there most common font or groups of fonts to get the job done even better? All the best
Hi Angie, I would do that just manually, that's probably the easiest. Every two minutes add the current timestamp of the video intot he doc and continue after. Clients usually want that in order to get some structure into the text

Hi, this video was cery useful. I have a question/doubt, i am asked to do subtitling with translation, and as a new freelancer, i am quite nervous about this. I am given 2 (almost 1.5 now) days to submit my project. Will i be able to make it? Also, could you please suggest me some tools that are available online (i would prefer free tools as i am new and dont know if i am invested in this field of work). Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated
Someone mentioned these opportunities to me. I didn't even know they existed. I am an English speaker and a few native languages. Seems you cant do this job if you don't know several foreign languages
Hi Thibaud, luckily I can charge all my subs work by working hour. Some clients charge per video minute or even words which I really don't like. You never know how tricky a video is to subtitle so I like to charge by the hour as long as it took me.
Despite having signed up at Corsera, I couldn't find any course for subtitling. I tried by keywords but still no course showed up. Although I got their email to confirm my details, my reply requesting assistance bounced back.
Hello! Great content, again! How do you feel about alternating double subtitle lines with single lines? For some reason, it keeps bothering me. I sometimes feel that it's somehow aesthetically disruptive. Should I try too hard to divide speech into double lines? All opinions are welcomed. Thank you!
Hi Alina, I don't mind it at all. Whenever possible, I try to keep it on one line. This allows more space to the imagine is my thought. I don't find it aesthetically disruptive, but if you do, then feel free to structure it in two lines. Me personally, if a text is less than 42 char, I leave it on one line.
Hi! You've mentioned that $1 per hour is ridiculous)) But what is the rate for subtitling you consider to be ok? And where do you get those job offers? On the freelance sites from one of your previous videos?
Hi Olena, the best is to charge it by the hour honestly. That's what I do. Then you dont need to worry about per minute rates as it can be very misleading (some videos are full of speech whereas others are more scenic). So just charge by the hour. Yes, I get my jobs through agencies and direct clients that I found mostly through recommendations or through the different approaches I mentioned in that video.
It depends, what is the task you're referring to? Transcription, timecode spotting, subtitle translation, all together? The rates example that I gave was for transcription and timecode spotting. In this case, your mentioned rate would be approximately $13 per hour, which before tax is far too little if you ask me.
@@Freelanceverse to hardcode subtitles, or burn subtitles onto the video, so the subtitles become part of the video which you can view it without needing subtitle plug-ins
Hi, if it takes you 1 h to transcribe and subtitle 5-7 video minutes, how long does translation take you? And how many hours per day can you be productive? Thanks, sorry for the long question
Depends so much on the text type. But I would guess around 500 words per hour. And I can be productive with actual brain intensive work for about 5 hours a day.
Thanks for the video but what about the rate of the translation itself without the transcription and the time coding? And how much is the proofreading for other translators?
Hi Naira, translation without the subtitling is simply normal translation service, so you should charge that with your per word rate. Proofreading is usually about 50% of your translation rate per word. Or you can charge it by the hour.
I have been doing subtitling for more than a year now. But I work for a freelancer. I want to get work from the clients directly. Kindly suggest me how can I...

Have u tried the new transcription feature in premiere Pro?
No, I haven't. Have you?
yeah, its pretty sweet!@@Freelanceverse
Hi, this video was cery useful.
I have a question/doubt, i am asked to do subtitling with translation, and as a new freelancer, i am quite nervous about this. I am given 2 (almost 1.5 now) days to submit my project. Will i be able to make it?
Also, could you please suggest me some tools that are available online (i would prefer free tools as i am new and dont know if i am invested in this field of work).
Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated
All brilliant, but have you got any tips on how to actually get jobs in AVT.
I have many videos on how to get jobs and build a portfolio, check out the channel page :)
Someone mentioned these opportunities to me. I didn't even know they existed. I am an English speaker and a few native languages. Seems you cant do this job if you don't know several foreign languages
Yes, you definitely need to know more than one language :)
Hello Adrian, interesting video! When you work on subtitles tasks, do you charge per hour or per minute? How does it work?
Hi Thibaud, luckily I can charge all my subs work by working hour. Some clients charge per video minute or even words which I really don't like. You never know how tricky a video is to subtitle so I like to charge by the hour as long as it took me.
@@Freelanceverse Thanks! Hopefully I'll get clients who accept the hour rate too :p
@@Freelanceverse what is realistic for an hour of work?
Hi Maarten, highly depends on client, language and jobs. For me it's usually somewhere between 50-150€ an hour.
@@Freelanceverse very good!
Despite having signed up at Corsera, I couldn't find any course for subtitling. I tried by keywords but still no course showed up. Although I got their email to confirm my details, my reply requesting assistance bounced back.
Hmm interesting, maybe there isn't one, I'm not familiar with the coursera courses.
@@Freelanceverse unless any existing course is paid which I didn’t search because I’m not interested.
thank you that's amazing ,
how much money should i get for on minute ?
You can do roughly 5 minutes per hour. So whatever you need times 5 is what you will get by the hour.
@@Freelanceverse Thank you! Very useful information.
Btw, I mentioned 1$ per minute, not per hour. I hope no one will ever offer 1$ per hour :D
@@Freelanceverse 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Yes, I was going to write "per minute"))) Something went wrong 🤣🤣
@@Freelanceverse I see. What about the rate of $2.29 per minute 😁 ? My language pair is Eng-Rus. Is this ok?
It depends, what is the task you're referring to? Transcription, timecode spotting, subtitle translation, all together? The rates example that I gave was for transcription and timecode spotting. In this case, your mentioned rate would be approximately $13 per hour, which before tax is far too little if you ask me.
How much charge for 10-12 minute video as a beginner plz🙏 reply
You can do about 5 minutes per hour. So think about what you want to earn per hour and multiply it by two :)
Thank you very much for your videos it's really helpful, and may I ask what program you use for hardcoding?
Thanks so much! :) what do you exactly mean by hardcoding?
@@Freelanceverse to hardcode subtitles, or burn subtitles onto the video, so the subtitles become part of the video which you can view it without needing subtitle plug-ins
Ah I see, I've never done that before.
@@Freelanceverse OK, thanks for replying :)
You said 1 dollar per minute is bad, so how much do you usually charge? What is a good rate?
🌼🌻thanks
I have been doing subtitling for more than a year now. But I work for a freelancer. I want to get work from the clients directly. Kindly suggest me how can I...
