Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Fun fact: It is possible to make smeargle to learn transform. Tough you have to jump through some hoops.
1.Smeargle must be faster than ditto
2. Smeargle must know a move like dig, fly, or dive
3. Use fly on your first turn so ditto transform will fail (when ditto uses Transform it’s last move (transform) doesn’t register)
4. Use sketch on the ditto.

I remember my first time when I got the Mew Glitch to work in Gen 1 and got so excited that I repeated the glitch on other trainers to encounter more pokemon, unaware of the existence of Missingno.
I panicked so hard after it appeared and the screen went all glitchy

@@takeda6516 it was that scenario but worse. In Pokémon Yellow Missingno is a little different. Instead of appearing right away, the game stays black in the transition for a little longer while the game plays a high pitched screeching noise, before the glitched Pokémon finally appears and crashes the game
@@solidzack that’s not what I remember, I remember Missingno freezing the game for *several minutes* and then letting me catch it. It never crashed.

Mew is my favorite pokemon, I hope it gets something to help it in the new games, whether it be an ability like Magic Bounce or some increase to its movepool, giving it moves it didn't before, because Mew deserves to be back at the top.
Increase it's movepool? It can literally already learn EVERY TM and tutor move in pokemon's history with the exception of signature moves and draco meteor -_-'

one cheese set that got kinda popular late into gen 8 was cosmic power + stored power
invest into HP or Speed and SpAtk and if you get the boosts off you can sweep easily (if you eliminate dark types first)

I remember as a kid there were soooo many rumors on how to get Mew. The Toys R' Us events were also just a bunch of bullshit. I would go there and employees would apologize and that was about it... No mew. Well around two years ago now as an adult I found one glitch that was really common. Again I thought it was a rumor but damn it seemed like every video proved it worked. Got that old Red Game and tried it, and it gave a me really nice feeling to find out that it worked... My poor childhood self would've loved this along time ago. But still it was nice after all these years to have actually caught a mew in the original game. Cus I actually caught Mew first in Pokemon Emerald with a Gameshark. 😅

Great vid this one. And i agree. Mew was pretty darn good. True it wasn't the most powerful pokemon in the world but its virtually unlimited move pool made it exceedingly versatile and that versatility makes it a solid choice for most trainers.
Jamie Lishbrook its actually the 2nd most Powerful Pokemon behind Mewtwo in Gen 1 whiles its the best Pokemon ever in Gen 2.

magmortar recently went from PU to NU, but electivire is still in PU. Even togedemaru and eelekross show it up in that tier so it's 100% dead. It was only good in gen 4.

Mew's the best baton pass mon, xP I once made an all Mew baton pass team for fun, but my best Mew was definitely the Iron Defense lead Mew as the staple lead on almost all my baton pass teams, itemless to reduce knock off damage and Very defensive the only answer to it was taunt, & some of my sets carried Magic Coat too.

I used mew as the focal point of my team in many tournaments. No one was ever ready for him. He could wreck a whole team in the right situation. This was in OU. Mainly gens 4 and 5

I want to see "How Good Was Unown Actually?" Unown is pretty underrated. With Hidden Power Fighting he can hit Tyranitar, and with Hidden Power Ice he can put strong Pokémon like Gliscor and the mighty Salamence on the run. Hidden Power Psychic gets STAB which means Unown basicall gets a Choice Specs boosts without being locked into a single move by Choice Specs.
Unown is quite a bit like Mew. Unown's versatility makes him basically uncounterable except for a few specific Unown counters. For example, since gen IV Hidden Power is always special so Chansey counters it decently. And Pokémon like Mewtwo can just use Self-destruct to get rid of Unown. But still, if your team packs counters to Unown's counters then Unown can be pretty useful.

There was an official Pokemon event in Bankstown Mall, Sydney Australia back in the 90's that my friend and I got to go to and there you could give your cartridge to the staff and they would load Mew on the game for you. I didn't know there was any other way until years and years later.
Finally time for Kangaskhan next week! Thanks to all the patreons for helping me finally get a vid on her!

For the 10+ years I’ve played Pokémon, I’ve never known what Snatch did. I’d rarely see it used in game and never saw it work successfully, but I didn’t see any reason to look it up. This video actually taught me what Snatch does, wow.
When I was a kid I used Barrier, 2 heal moves (Soft Boil and Recover, I think) and Hypnosis. My friends and classmates would try and burn my Mew down, but I just slept them and healed through everything while also wasting their PP.

It's only used for spikes...
It was a spiker, but it also a premier hazard remover for a long time. Forretress also had respectable attack power, so it wasn't dead weight after setting hazards and utilized explosion. It also even spec'd into its special defense sometimes in order to take advantage of its type resistances.
Cloyster was thought to be a one dimensional pokemon, but his video wound up highly interesting upon examination. I think Forretress will be treated similarly.
