I used to underestimate Ferrothorn because I've been using Volcarona for a long time. But when people started using Knock Off, that was an astonishing punishment for the switch-ins. And if you don't pack a Fire-type, chances are Ferrothorn will wall at least 5/6 of your team
Even when you have a fire type it's a pain if it makes contact. Life orb speed Boost Blaziken which is what I run, while fully capable on OHKOing Ferro, has to worry about Rocky Helmet. If you are running Flare Blitz (most do, but I run Blaze Kick despite the endless objections of many) you are looking at a half dead Blaziken right off the bat.
With a base stat total of just 489, Ferrothorn is a *great* example of why BST is not the be-all end-all of a Pokémon’s viability. Ferrothorn has the perfect combination of a good ability, great typing, useable movepool and a solid stat *distribution* (which is just as, if not, *more important* than BST itself.)
Oh boy, here we go, it's the big one. While not longer than the Chansey/Blissey and Charizard remakes (though it's pretty dang close), those were Gen 1 Pokemon, while Ferrothorn was a Gen 5 Pokemon, which makes this even more significant
Isn't it funny that they took those annoying spiky seed pods known for nothing more than inspiring velcro and getting stuck on your clothes, and turned 'em into a carnivorous tripod BEAST that can laugh in the face of gods? That's why I love Pokemon. Any creature can become an absolute menace.
In some ways, Ferrothorn is the Vegeta to Quagsire's Goku. On one hand, you have this serious beast blessed with natural strength and skill, a dominant threat who can challenge even gods. Then you have the dumb goofy guy who's been around for longer and, despite being dismissed as "low-class" and "weak," is right up there in the big leagues with him.
I love the interactions bug and grass have with steel. Steel cancels out most of their weaknesses and gains resistances and an immunity in exchange for a 4x weakness. Bug and grass also cancel out steel's weakness to ground (bug also cancels the fighting weakness). Despite bug and grass being seen as a mediocre type, they combine with steel for great combination.
I find it funny how both Bug and Grass are considered generally bad defensive types, albeit with some rare valueable resistances (Ground/Water with Grass, Ground/Fighting with bug) But toghether with still they combine amazingly well
More like how ABSOLUTELY AMAZING was Ferrothorn. I couldn't imagine the insane amount of research and editing required to make a video on Ferrothorn. No wonder there was no video last week. Even it's pre-evolution was incredible in low tiers and Little Cup. A video of it's success could only be rivaled in scope by Landorus/Landorus-T. Ferrothorn is the most successful grass type of all time. Gen V completely redefined what it meant to be a OU staple, with mons like Ferrothorn, Volcarona, Excadrill and Landorus taking the lead. Ferrothorn is one of the best Pokémon of all time and will continue to be in future games.
Watching this channel has really helped me see just how many meta defining pokemon Gen 5 bought. Ferro, Volcarona, Keldeo, , Excadrill, the genies. And that's without even talking about how much life hidden abilities breathed into older mons.
@@jaretco6423 i don’t think anyone ever says that in terms of the competitive scene. It’s usually the opposite, people usually associate gen 5 with when they turn power creep up a notch

With a Pokémon like Ferrothorn, "great" doesn't even begin to describe how much of an impact it has made since its debut, and how much of an impact it will make for generations to come.
I just wonder what it'll take to make it end up like skarmory or starmie. I guess ferrothorn managed to prove itself over them by not being done in by a pair o' shoes (which seemed to theoretically be a problem for it, given its playstyle). But time will tell if something does show up to achieve the impossible and dethrone it. Or, who knows, maybe Gamefreak will eventually get sick of it and make it another victim of Dexit.

Personally love assault vest ferro, nobody expects the extra special bulk. They especially don't expect it to OHKO their switch in (on a resisted hit in some cases.) Though ofc it is still scared to death of staying in against fire and/or fighting stabs. +Atk - Speed, max Atk + Hp, rest in Def or Spdef Gyro Ball Power Whip (Seed bomb just doesn't ko on most neutral switch ins) Body Press Knock Off
"We're going to give Ferrothorn insane defenses and make it very slow." "Wouldn't that make it bait? It can't defend itself." "Aha, there's the catch. It can. Give it 94 attack."
Note: While ferrothorn is definitely a factor in zacian running sacred sword, the main reason zacian runs sacred sword is so that it doesn't have to deal with defense drops, as defense drops make it harder to use zacian's good bulk, something a lot of players are investing in right now. Also noted that ferro has fallen off a fair bit due to the rise of rinya sun and swordfish teams transitioning to rilla as their grass type.
And by "Well Made" what needs to be said is that it not only means "good" but also "fair" Ferrothorn has countless great traits, but it's perfectly fair as it lacks reliable recovery outside of Leech Seed etc, it's not like Toxapex which feels completely cheap in singles or Incineroar in Doubles, those are just bullshit mons
funnily enough, even though ferro is a great wall, stall usually can't fit it because stall as a playstyle already gets 6 0ed by magma taunt heatran so slapping on more mons that get smashed by tran is a bad idea.
I just love how necrozma just absolutely nukes other pokemon with light that burns the sky and then ferrothorn is just there like 'nice attack, but not enough!' And then proceeds to kill it with gyro ball.
I think Ferrothorn is one of those rare pokemon that completely changes the face of OU without "overcentralizing". It is an absolute powerhouse of a threat that NEEDS to be one most, if not all, teams. But if the temperature rises above 80 degrees Fahrenheit, it absolutely turns to ash and molten metal. Fire is not an uncommon attacking type. It makes sure that both teams are using it, but it's easy to deal with. It keeps the meta from being centralized because you need a counter for Ferro...and a counter for its' counters. And a counter for *its'* counters. And a bulky Grass/Steel, a strong and/or fast Fire, and a similarly bulky Water...is just half your team *anyway*. And it's not for one pokemon because that Water-type is likely going to be there ANYWAY because Bulky Waters are a staple.
Ferrothorn's stats always seemed odd to me. Like 74, not 75? 131, not 130? 116, not 115? Oh well, at least the speed stat is divisible by 5. It seems like all the stats were designed around the speed stat.
Ferrothorn might be the first Pokemon I've seen that has a decent HP stat with good Defense and Special Defense. The best you'll often see from wall and tank Pokemon is to have 2 of those 3 things going for it, like Blissey's high HP and Special Defense but terrible Defense, or Shuckle having both great defenses with awful HP. Ferrothorn's only weakness is, well, it's only weakness, fire (I forget if grass makes it neutral to fighting). A neutral hit from either the physical or special side will just be shrugged off.
@@alexbeauchamp8627 toxapex has just 50 HP. It's just great because it has 3 million support moves like Ferrothorn. Otherwise it's raw bulk is on par with Victini and Manaphy

What's funny is that ferroseed isn't even included in this video. It's an hour long even WITHOUT the similarly powerful pre evolution's adventures in the lower tiers.
Ferroseed's solo video is also gonna be easily 25 minutes long I presume since in every single generation it is viable in 1-2 lower tier AND Little Cup

As a ferropex main in casual gen 7, I'm glad to see one of the 2 best tanks in the game getting an in depth analysis for those who want to get into competitive pokemon.
Several videos for some really important mons, such as Groudon and Kyogre, were made in previous years while they are continuing to make huge impact in the current meta game. Hope to see a update for those videos in the future.
Ferrothorn is basically an old truck with 300,000 miles to its name and it still runs better and more reliably than all the models that have come out after its introduction.
The sheer joy I’d receive when switching my rocky helmet Ferrothorn into Urshifu-R’s surging strikes and watching its hp go down to near zero is unmatched. I’m missing Ferrothorn in gen 9😢
Happy to see this. I remember that back then during early Gen 5, I found forum posts questioning Ferrothorn's viability and purpose because many just didn't see how valuable of an addition it was to a team. It's interesting to see how competitive knowledge evolved. Now Ferrothorn's viability is just visibly obvious. Steel type is that good.
Can't wait for the 30+ minute Ferroseed video since Ferrothorn is such a beast! I may not like Gen 5's pokemon designs, but Ferrothorn is one of the few gen 5 pokemon that is the exception that even has Arceus quiver in fear.
Lugia: Ha, nobody could ever replicate my title of "The Great Wall" in OU! Ferrothorn: *Observe* BTW, to answer the question at the end of the video, I wouldn't nerf Ferrothorn. Its prevalence and multiple duties on a game-to-game basis can work against its favor, and Fire and Fighting coverage remain commonly seen, so all in all, Ferrothorn might still be a beast, but ways to tame it exist. That said I wouldn't buff it either, because like I said, Ferrothorn is already a beast.
Doesn't have Recover/Roost though but still a beast of a wall and not a sitting duck with decent base attack with high-powered STAB moves to compensate.
Just wanted to say, videos like this are totally worth the wait. Definitely don’t stress about missing a week or two to finish these movies, they’re so much fun.
This was definitely worth the wait. Ferrothorn has been a good Pokemon in every generation since its creation, but its viability has always varied based on what the format was. I appreciate you acknowledging the official way to pronounce Ferrothorn even though it's not the way you like to say it lol
I knew Ferrothorn’s video was gonna be a lengthy one and boy was I right! I’ve been so interested in how Ferrothorn performs throughout the generations because I know it is very popular and reliable, but I did not know to what extent. I’m glad this video gave me a lot of insight into just how amazing Ferrothorn really is! Thank you False Swipe Gaming team! 🙏
All of Gen4, Water Types felt almost busted because their only real counter (grass types) really really struggled to make a lasting impact, since Grass has sooo many resists. Meanwhile Grass Types always had to fear Ice Attacks, ensuring Water Types made progress. Roserade showed the potential of a Spiking Grass type that used hazard stacking to ensure progress, but its fear of Physical Water types and Ice Beams always made it shaky as a general purpose Water-Type counter. Even before Gen 5’s announcement there were actually more than a few players in Smogon theorymonning/wishing for a well rounded bulky Grass/Steel type that used Spikes or otherwise had a way of forcing progress outside trying to use Grass Attacks. At the time we wished for such a Mon as a needed balance to the overwhelming dominance of Bulky Waters, but we didn’t think its actualization would not only end the the archetype of Suicune/Milotic/Swampert-like Pokémon completely, but become one of the most dominant OU Pokémon of all time.
Well water types wouldn't have been that strong if only they didn't slap ice beam on every water and their grandma as well as having Poison be SE against Water which should've been a thing since gen 1. Water types pre gen 4 were only weak to special types which made pokemon like Milotic and Kyogre FAR more annoying to take down than they should be.

This guy doesn't do anything fancy or surprising, it's just raw fundamentals, a healthy approach to life and the game, and a never say die attitude.
If you ask casual spectators who their favorite competitor is, not many people are going to mention this guy because he might be kinda boring, but anybody who knows a lot about the sport, either because they've been around for a long time or because they've competed themselves, all say that they respect the hell out of him for his consistency and commitment and they always know he'll put up a good fight and whenever there's a conversation among experts of who's the GOAT, he'll always be mentioned, not because he necessarily has a ton of trophies to his name, though he does have plenty, but because he's always there, at or near the top of the game, no matter what.
Well said man

Gen 5 seriously might’ve been the most important Pokémon game ever.

Later gen of Ferrothorn is literally just a grass Metagross while Metagross is literally a psychic Ferrothorn.
👀 Imagine if ferrothorn had reliable recovery *shudders*
lefties and leech seed is plenty reliable tbf
Lol what if they gave it synthesis?
@@Retro89Dec There's a good reason they never gave it
@@Retro89Dec and maybe metal burst?
Ubers. I'll just put it that way. Ferrothorn would be Ubers with reliable recovery and so would be Landorus-T.
Ferrothorn and Ferroseed is finally here. I’m not even the biggest fan of Generation 5 but I respect how formidable and important this mon is.
Thanks for an awesome analysis of one of if not the best Pokémon in Gen V OU.
Edit: Okay so Ferroseed is not in this video but I am betting we will get it soon, where it played like it’s older evolution in the lower tiers. Maybe even the next video.
@@sephikong8323 Yeah probably. Although it depends on how much they have to say about it considering it has a similar role to ferrothorn but without a vgc presence.
You know this thing is amazing when its video length is the same as Chansey and Blissey even though it only had 3 gens
Since it had better VGC experience and has been constantly in OU while both have been at UU at least once
And only being a couple of minutes shorter than Charizard and its two mega evolutions
4 gens.
@@IgnitedQuils To be fair, more tiers are covered in the Chansey/Blissey video.
“What else could it take on? Oh you know, just ARCEUS” has gotta be one of my new favorite sentences ever spoken.
Gen 9: Removed for making homophobic comments.
YAHOO! To say that I've been waiting for Ferrothorn to be covered after always hearing it mentioned on this channel is an understatement and then some!
I'd say some of the earlier reviews like starmie and gengar could definitely use a revisiting. Those guys' reviews were too early to cover even gen 7.
The way I see it, Kyogre is surrounded, you know what's under the ocean? That's right more earth
Ferrothorn is the developers saying "aight, we gave you some mediocre grass types in the past gens, take this boi with 94 attack and broken defenses"
Well, if Ferrothorn is one of the best pokemon of all time, I cant wait to see what he says about Landorus-T
it's funny, only after playing Pokemon GO and doing the pvp did I fall in love with Ferrothorn, and its rather opposite counterpart, Kartana
Ferrothorn is basically an old truck with 300,000 miles to its name and it still runs better and more reliably than all the models that have come out after its introduction.
pex
I may not like Gen 5's pokemon designs, but Ferrothorn is one of the few gen 5 pokemon that is the exception that even has Arceus quiver in fear.
and then if ferro wasn't good competitively the design would be trash like "wtff its literally just a living spikeball???? soo uncreative"
Alternative title: Annoying plant refuses to die and causes a BKC video length documentry on FSG's channel.
False Swipe Gaming presents: Ferrothorn the movie.
Come, and hear the story of one of the greatest Steel types ever!
i never understood ferrothorns hype i always bring a fire type so they just so quickly im just like how is this one of the best pokemon
@@shadowphoenic fire types usually arent that great in competitive
@@CanadianFaye heatran is crying in the corner rn
@@heatran5717 usually is the key word
@@CanadianFaye yeah, rocks prevalence and no spikes immunity and no utility in avoiding ground attacks and using Defog like flying does wear fire down
Lugia: Ha, nobody could ever replicate my title of "The Great Wall" in OU!
Ferrothorn: *Observe*
BTW, to answer the question at the end of the video, I wouldn't nerf Ferrothorn.
How HOMOPHOBIC was Ferrothorn actually?
He triple spikes on Slowbro and Exeggutor then Dragon Tail Exeggutor out on repeat (none of them learned Fire move) (Ferrothorn uses illegal moves)
Just wanted to say, videos like this are totally worth the wait. Definitely don’t stress about missing a week or two to finish these movies, they’re so much fun.
Kellen and everyone helped him on the investigation deserve a huge gratitude from us, thank you for bringing another movie :D
