What I like most is that Nidoking's Life Orb + Sheer Force combo with all the special coverage it has access to was so good that the people probably didn't even notice/know Nidoking got a +10 boost to it's base attack stat in Gen 6.
Because even with stronger physical attack, it doesn't have the move coverage that synergizes well enough. You're always going to get more out of your special attack stat.
Yeah no kidding, Nido went to the same school all the Normal types with ridiculous movepools go to. Like you know the movepool of a pokemon has always been good when he didn't even bring Hidden Power even once on gen 3 (I think)
Instead of a measly +10 attack, they should have replaced Rivalry with Huge Power. After all, its a moon rabbit, it fits the pun much more than any of the pokemon that _do_ get it! I'm sure it would have been perfectly balanced and nothing would have gone wrong =) ... Nidoking for me is one of THE gen 1 Pokémon. It's got the features shared by many gen 1 pokemon that I adore. The spikes, the sharp edges, the rugged feel, and that wonderful armored look.
Nidoking was one of my favorites for Pokemon Stadium use. You could give him complete coverage with his available move pool. For the 3v3's a leadoff Dugtrio, utility Nidoking and sweeper Zapdos was a team I used a lot.
The Nidos are a duo where no matter what you think of them, they’re respectable Pokemon that stood the test of time. And in the case of the King here, it’s interesting seeing his role shift from physical attacker to special attacker, which is something that he doesn’t look Iike he would specialize in
Sheer Force made the classic Gen 1 "every Elemental TM ever" compatibility pay dividends to him later on. It also really demonstrates the importance o f Move BP, as despite the ~15% gap in its offenses after the Gen 6 buff, its Special Movepool is so much stronger in correlating types (Sludge Wave vs PJ, Ice Punch vs Ice Beam, etc) that there's no contest in picking Special (at most Luring with Physical moves like Superpower). Nidoking is basically a good Speed Boosting move or comparable Physical options away from "Landorus-I at home" (and Lando-I's home is Ubers so that's a fair size down)
@@Oscarus4250It aint focus miss bad but that still means you'll miss 1/5 attacks. Often when it'll matter most. It'll probably depend on the metagame and what it *needs* to take out.
Little beside the topic, but Nido-family are great designs in a way that Pokemon has not really done ever since. Instead of being one clear animal-design with magical features, they are more like algamation of different creatures. And in a way that looks natural. They are like dinosaurs with mammal-features mixed in. They are monsters in true sense of the word. I feel like if Nido-family were real life animals, they could be related to Monotremes, like platypus and echidna. Mammals who lay eggs.
Nidoking is actually the reason I got into Pokémon. Way back in 1st grade I noticed one of my friends was drawing. He was using one of those Pokédex books as reference. When I asked him about it, he flipped through the book showing me different Pokémon. Eventually he showed me Nidoking, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever, and from there I became totally obsessed with Pokémon. I loved browsing through the Pokémon website. Id wake up early on Saturdays to try and catch new episodes of the show. During recess my friends and I would pretend we were Pokémon and “battle”. And 16 years later I’m still a fan, though not quite as obsessed as I was when I was 6 lol. All thanks to Nidoking (and my friend of course)
I’m actually a testicular cancer survivor and appreciate the ad here. I’m 32 and 3.5 years cancer free! Also Nidoking is such a boss, I love it! Especially when it got Sheer Force Life Orb to let it resume it’s mixed attacking role

Nidoking was always one of the coolest old school mons, it's funny how its typing started out being a major hindrance and just kept giving it more utility over time, which works great with its versatile movepool and Sheer Force to take advantage of it offensively.
Whenever Nidoqueen was brought up, I kept thinking about Nidoking being a supportive partner who cheered queen on despite taking some of the spotlight.

Nidoking has always had a great movepool. Even dumb kids like me recognized in Gen 1 that it was a great pokemon for running through the main game, and now it's the mon of choice for speedrunning glitchless gen 1. Honestly, with his great movepool and Sheer Force, the only thing holding him back is his relatively low BST of 495/505 generation pending.

When you use your (admittedly not much) lower Sp Atk stat rather than your Atk stat because Sheer Force is just that busted of an ability, especially since it stops recoil damage from Life Orb for some reason.
For me, Nidoking is the most "Pokemon" of all Pokemon. In a game of many animal and bug-adjacent creatures, Nidoking stands out design-wise as an actual pocket monster.
I had a lot of success in X & Y with a physical/defensive Nidoking with Poison Point that no one used. I would switch in and both poison physical attackers and damage them with rocky helmet and then attack with moves like Poison Jab, Stone Edge, Drill Run, & Sucker Punch.
Because I was often switching it in and my pool of usable Pokémon at the time were not compatible enough with a teammate that could hit them with earthquake it was easier and more versatile to not use the move at all.
Honestly, I doubt it would’ve kept it up in OU for Gen 9, especially with threats like Walking Wake and Great Tusk running around, but it definitely wouldn’t be weak with it checking threats like Kingambit, Gholdengo, Iron Valiant, Glimmora and Raging Bolt. It absolutely would’ve rocked in UU, semi-countering top picks in Excadrill, Zapdos, H-Arcanine, and Hydrapple. Plus Tera may let it get some fun extra bulk and get STAB on its valuable coverage.
I do really enjoy Focus Punch Nidoking as a really dangerous wallbreaker that also has a solid Speed stat so it can keep pace with many offensive teams. However, a Fire move is also solid so that Skarmory and Scizor can't hold off its assault.
I was listening to pokemon music when this notification came up, and the video is about one of the most badass pokemon. Perfect timing. Also, How GREAT Was Gengar ACTUALLY? My favorite Ghost type.
nidoking is like a fighting game grappler. No tricks, no bullshit, just honest fundamentals. Good movepool, good offensive stabs, great ability. Not topping OU any time soon but gets the job done where he needs to and thrives in whatever tier he ends up in
The purple king that absolutely dominated the early game in my first ever team in Pokemon Blue. By being fully evolved after Mt. Moon (before the second or third gym I think?) I believe I named it Rex. Godspeed Rex. You were an OG.
Little sidenote about GSC Nidoking: Lovely Kiss and Morning Sun (and Sweet Kiss) are from the special Pokémon Center New York event (that included some other interesting exclusives like Lovely Kiss Snorlax or Rapid Spin Geodude) but each Nidoran (hatched from an egg) can have only one of the three moves. This means that Lovely Kiss + Morning Sun can't be used on the same Nidoking and despite the potential of the latter the sheer utility of the former is too good to pass up.
Fun Fact-Nidoking seems to be inspired by the kaiju Baragon. A purple dog like dinosaur who amusingly could breathe fire and burrow through the ground. So at least we know why Nidoking can breathe fire. He also fought Frankenstein. So if we ever get a Frankenstein pokemon I hope to see it clash with Nidoking.
I had a built Nidoking for my mono Poison run of BDSP. His name was simply "King" and he was one of my most powerful team members, absolutely goated Pokémon. 🐐
Still waiting for the counterparts to complete: - Carracosta - Seviper - other gen 5 monkeys - Gothitelle And I guess we could finish up Gen 2 with Sunflora, Magcargo and Corsola. I think those are the only gen 2 Pokemon left to wrap it up.
I guess a video about sunflora, magcargo and corsola will be just joke videos since this trees are not viable in every generation that they existed, or he will just not doing
One of the coolest gen 1 mons. I was the poison gym leader for a Facebook group in ORAS-early USUM and the combination of Nido and Toxicroak won me a lot of battles. You had to guess if my Nido had Life Orb special set with Superpower, Choice Band, or Choice Specs and if my Croak was Nasty Plot, SubPunch, or Choice Scarf full physical set. They worked together very well
After using both Nidos, I've come to realize something. Nidoking makes better use of its hidden ability Sheer Force and elemental coverage moves, while Nidoqueen makes better use of its typing and Poison Point ability.
Always liked Nidoking, but didn't realize how good they were until my friend explained that it become that much more of a threat with a single speed boost But how do you get your speed boost? Nidoking gets no speed-boosting moves. And yes, that's true. But in Gen 8, Max Airstream exists. And Nidoking gets 1 Flying move. Peck. Suffice to say, I saw my friend's vision at that point.
I remember that in Gen 8, Nidoking was benefited by the limited pool of counters against it, due to Dexit. Making it stayed in OU on the first months of the post-CT meta.
I love how Nidoking is best used as a special attacker despite the pokedex keep going on about how tough and strong it is. It's like if Alakazam's best set was physical because it had a weird interaction with an ability and item
I would love for both Nidos to get a buff. They’re one of those Pokemon that are so unique and loved that they should given special treatment like Gard, Gengar, Charizard… etc. Buffs: Rivalry should have its draw back removed. No clue why it’s included and it just makes a Pokemon weak. If removed it can be pretty interesting to use. Stats: 10+ on both. Fem 5/5 on defense and male 5/5 on Spec. Att and speed. Megas: hopefully they’ll get a mega in the future. I can imagine fem getting battle armor and male getting something like merciless 😅.
Not going to lie I'm actually VERY surprised you haven't made one on Nidoking yet considering is one of the best, versatile and popular Gen 1 pokemon especially in RBY. But I'm VERY happy nonetheless you covered him. He's one of my favorites along with Nidoqueen both competitively and aesthetically.
SwSh gen8 UU is my favourite tier of all time. Everything is just so perfectly settled, balanced, funny. I hope this gen would be the standard for many years to come.
The fact that nidoking is an OU viable special wallbreaker in late gens with lower speed than Meowth and the same SpA as Murkrow definitely says something about Pokémon but I have no idea what it is
I love mons like this, who get incremental tools to change and evolve their game over time, and they make for the best videos imo. Reminds me of Feraligatr in a lot of ways (not just Sheer Force), but the crazy thing about King is he doesn't even need to boost, which given his paltry 85 sp atk and speed is really cool/unique in higher tiers.
Gen5 Nidoking went absolutely crazy with special attacks and this also made it even better at running hazards because so many Pokemon will run for their lives when they see Nidoking
I have raised so many Nidoking in my life and in competitive mono type ground (XY-USUM) I’ll never forget that one time I was on showdown and my opponent got incredibly angry at the fact I ran Focus Sash Nidoking instead of the Life Orb variant and got the win, claiming that everyone uses Life Orb And a friendly tip for anyone who wants to use a Nidoking in the RBY/FRLG Always evolve your Nidorino before 22 to learn Thrash off the bat as a early auto kill button
Love your work guys ❤ One suggestion I feel making: slow down the animations of the video. A great thing about your videos is to see the old style graphics and animations; when they are sped up like that it's harder to do it. Other than that keep up the great work ❤
"Freeze Clause" is such a weird, schoolyard-level rule to me. Like sleep clause and evasion clause I get as feasible because they have dedicated moves you have to go out of your way to use, but freezing is entirely chance based and only on attacking moves. I can't help if my ice-type move is the best option to use in this situation or if it freezes you. You can't really do that ruling without fundamentally altering the code of how those moves work- or by just not letting anyone use ice moves after a freeze happens. It feels to me like the epitome of "nuh-uh my pokemons frozen now so you can't use ice moves cause I said so" It's stuff like that and sleep clause stuff where in an irl game of pokemon if a person broke sleep clause the gane would be forfeited or reset but if they try to break it in showdown it just fails for the turn and other random code differences that always bugs the back of my mind saying "showdown isn't really pokemon" End of random showdown/clause rant lol
I mean if you don't agree with freeze clause... You don't have to play that tier or even showdown as a whole. I get the semantics of it, and how changing the game so fundamentally can be off putting, but players agree that the game is much more competitive without it, along with the meta being much worse if ice moves were banned as a whole. I promise you, your sentiments and arguments have been heard before and discussed when they were making the clause, but I doubt it's going to change now.
Freeze clause is exclusive to gen 1. In gen 1, a freeze is a ko. Nothing thaws out except for the fire type, no mon uses fire coverage in OU, and blizzard is the best attack in the game and present on every special attacker, so you will feasibly get frozen in a gen 1 match which are already long
Well, while Sheer Force + Life Orb is the best in slot for Nido. I was dwelled in the Scarf Nido for quite some time. The surprise bait to the faster in meta pokemon amused me so much until I realized my damage isn't enough if it wasn't a x4 weakness hit. So back to Life Orb it is.

He learns earthquake tho, why drill run
To not hit allies in double battles
@@alexpfeifle879 literally just use a flying type
Because I was often switching it in and my pool of usable Pokémon at the time were not compatible enough with a teammate that could hit them with earthquake it was easier and more versatile to not use the move at all.
Sheer Force + Life orb goes BRRRRRRRR
"Sheer Firce with Life Orb gave it a 69% boost"
Nice.
Nikoking is the epitome of the Gen 1 Movepool
Nidos have pretty outdated base stats, +5 to all would be super welcome. Or at least +5 to offensive ones for king, +5 to defensive ones for queen
Manscaped ad for the nidoking video is crazy
Honestly, I doubt it would’ve kept it up in OU for Gen 9, especially with threats like Walking Wake and Great Tusk running around, but it definitely wouldn’t be weak with it checking threats like Kingambit, Gholdengo, Iron Valiant, Glimmora and Raging Bolt.
It absolutely would’ve rocked in UU, semi-countering top picks in Excadrill, Zapdos, H-Arcanine, and Hydrapple. Plus Tera may let it get some fun extra bulk and get STAB on its valuable coverage.
And personally i wish Nidoking can get dragon dance.its definitely a pokemon that looks like it can learn it plus physical nidoking is so fun to use
Nidoking was a great Pokémon in BDSP OU, which is always very cool
I do really enjoy Focus Punch Nidoking as a really dangerous wallbreaker that also has a solid Speed stat so it can keep pace with many offensive teams. However, a Fire move is also solid so that Skarmory and Scizor can't hold off its assault.

I was listening to pokemon music when this notification came up, and the video is about one of the most badass pokemon. Perfect timing.
Also, How GREAT Was Gengar ACTUALLY? My favorite Ghost type.
My all time fav since playing Red Version. So glad you’re covering it again!!
nidoking is like a fighting game grappler.
Still waiting for the counterparts to complete:
- Carracosta
- Seviper
- other gen 5 monkeys
- Gothitelle
And I guess we could finish up Gen 2 with Sunflora, Magcargo and Corsola. I think those are the only gen 2 Pokemon left to wrap it up.
Why do you keep misspelling Seviper?
I guess a video about sunflora, magcargo and corsola will be just joke videos since this trees are not viable in every generation that they existed, or he will just not doing
One of the coolest gen 1 mons. I was the poison gym leader for a Facebook group in ORAS-early USUM and the combination of Nido and Toxicroak won me a lot of battles. You had to guess if my Nido had Life Orb special set with Superpower, Choice Band, or Choice Specs and if my Croak was Nasty Plot, SubPunch, or Choice Scarf full physical set. They worked together very well
Nidoking is my fave gen 1 pokemon so Ive been waiting for this for a while
Finally another one of my top ten joints getting a video
Seeing one of the old guards still hanging on in UU warms my heart.
Imagine if Earthquake had a 1% chance to have a secondary effect 😮❤
It would still run Earth Power as it fills the role of a Special Attacking Ground Type
After using both Nidos, I've come to realize something. Nidoking makes better use of its hidden ability Sheer Force and elemental coverage moves, while Nidoqueen makes better use of its typing and Poison Point ability.
Always a staple when availble on my runs! Love his design!
what a cute purple kaiju rabbit lizard thingy
Nidoking has been a personal favorite of mine for as long as I’ve played Pokémon games which is roughly since the year 2000ish lol
Ahh yes, the GOAT of Gen 1 playthroughs is back!
My favorite mon of them all. Hail to the king, baby.
Always liked Nidoking, but didn't realize how good they were until my friend explained that it become that much more of a threat with a single speed boost
But how do you get your speed boost? Nidoking gets no speed-boosting moves. And yes, that's true.
But in Gen 8, Max Airstream exists. And Nidoking gets 1 Flying move.
Peck.
Suffice to say, I saw my friend's vision at that point.

Okay, I like Thief's move animation, really goes well with Nidokings contact move animation.
THATS MY GOAT
I've been dying for you guys to revisit Nidoking, he's absolutely one of my favorite pokemon
If Tyranitar is the king of OU, then Nidoking should be crowned the king of UU.
Sheerforce + Life Orb is *Chef Kiss* with Ice Beam, Fire Blast, Sludge Wave and Earth Power
One of my favourite gen 1 mons. I love using Nidoking during my playthroughs
Great video, you just forgot to mention the very slight stat buff Nidoking received in gen 6!
Imagine if that +10 attack buff was put into a stat it actually used.
It wouldn't have been bad if it had a setup move like dragon dance, but even with DD, you would probably run 2 sp atk and 1 physical
Would love to see a Gallade remake now that he got way better tools and now has an identity
"It is fitting that this ruler is older than many of the subjects in the game of Pokemon today"
That line aged me.
King should keep Sheer Force imo, Queen should get Solid Rock or something, that would be cool. 🔥
There was nothing like landing an Earthquake with Nidoking in Pokemon Stadium 1
the original nidoking video was one of my personal favorites
I have raised so many Nidoking in my life and in competitive mono type ground (XY-USUM)
I’ll never forget that one time I was on showdown and my opponent got incredibly angry at the fact I ran Focus Sash Nidoking instead of the Life Orb variant and got the win, claiming that everyone uses Life Orb
And a friendly tip for anyone who wants to use a Nidoking in the RBY/FRLG
Always evolve your Nidorino before 22 to learn Thrash off the bat as a early auto kill button
Nidoking is a Pokemon that I always catch when I replay any gen 1 game, also with Sandslash
Fun fact: None of Nidoking´s stats go above 100, except attack after XY (It went from 92 to 102)
And he's still better with special attacks.
So unfortunate. I really wish that his stats were better. I hope they buff him *ALOT* when he returns from Dexit.
Possible buffs: Rock Polish, Gunk Shot, Nasty Plot
Swords Dance, Dragon Dance, Calm Mind, Agility. 🔥
@KingStr0ng I'm a big advocate for DD with two SpAtks and EQ
Love your work guys ❤
One suggestion I feel making: slow down the animations of the video.
It feels to me like the epitome of "nuh-uh my pokemons frozen now so you can't use ice moves cause I said so"
It's stuff like that and sleep clause stuff where in an irl game of pokemon if a person broke sleep clause the gane would be forfeited or reset but if they try to break it in showdown it just fails for the turn and other random code differences that always bugs the back of my mind saying "showdown isn't really pokemon"
End of random showdown/clause rant lol
I mean if you don't agree with freeze clause... You don't have to play that tier or even showdown as a whole. I get the semantics of it, and how changing the game so fundamentally can be off putting, but players agree that the game is much more competitive without it, along with the meta being much worse if ice moves were banned as a whole. I promise you, your sentiments and arguments have been heard before and discussed when they were making the clause, but I doubt it's going to change now.
Freeze clause is exclusive to gen 1. In gen 1, a freeze is a ko. Nothing thaws out except for the fire type, no mon uses fire coverage in OU, and blizzard is the best attack in the game and present on every special attacker, so you will feasibly get frozen in a gen 1 match which are already long
@@danka1167 its also in gen 2
Well, while Sheer Force + Life Orb is the best in slot for Nido. I was dwelled in the Scarf Nido for quite some time.
The surprise bait to the faster in meta pokemon amused me so much until I realized my damage isn't enough if it wasn't a x4 weakness hit. So back to Life Orb it is.
My favorite pokemon of all time! thank you so much for making another video on the KING
Shoulg get a buff in sp atk instrad of atk, such a great movepool and ability but very poor stats.
I’ve been waiting for this one I love using Sheer Force Nidoking with either life orb for even more damage or a focus sash on lead to ensure something gets damaged
Great video! Nidoking is my favourite mon in the game. He looks awesome, and packs a punch.
Fantastic it hold so well, balancing beween OU and UU until the end despite power creep.
You didn’t explain that with a Modest nature Queen is actually more powerful than Timid King. Otherwise great video
Now, personally, the Nidos are among my favorite pokemons, so I'd absolutely love for them to be buffed to OU relevance.
