ed p At one point, Merle was somewhat absent from the public eye. He said he decided he was going to learn to play the fiddle, after being a guitarist his entire professional life. He took about a year making the effort. He said he didn’t want to embarrass himself or push a vanity on the band. This performance doesn’t show the extent of his abilities, he was here to honor the Playboys, and memories of Bob. Not many people have stopped down in mid career and achieved this level. Merle was a musician, not someone who just played around. His talent, on guitar and violin will be missed by everyone.

I caught Asleep at the wheel 10 or so years ago here in the UK and as I was also performing at the same festival we got back stage with our artists passes, ASATW were touring with a Bob Wills tribute show and my band colleague Gordon Doel ( The Doel Brother's) commented that he loved the Tommy Duncan tune in their set, now I guess a band like this gets a lot of folks who think they know all about country music and then even more about Bob Wills so the lad that sung the Duncan tune countered with a really obscure track that requires a 2 vocal harmony that Gordon matched perfectly, the look on this guy's face... finally someone who gets it!! Gordon's family were brought up on country music and particularly Bob Wills and Asleep at the wheel who championed Bob's sound at a time when it was no longer fashionable, my fave was Luke Wills "nickel in the jukebox", this slice of the Texas Playboys is perfection!!🙏
Hello Mark, how are you doing. I hope you are safe and in good health. Looking for a new friend and i saw your pic here. I hope you don't mind thank you.
My whole family got to see one of Bob's last performances in Cuero, TX. Bob and the Playboys put on a hell of a show and we talk about it every time we get together. Todays country is just so hollow.
Where's Eldon Shamblin, Johnny Gimble and Leon Rouch? I miss them. Used to do some twin fiddling with Johnny Gimble when I lived in Austin in the 70's and he had the heart of a teacher. He showed me his melody licks on all those old tunes the band is doing on this video and brought them to life as he added the harmony parts. Said Bob Wills wasn't really impressed with fancy all that much as long as everyone could count and started and finished together it was okay. He was a really good old man. Sitting around and playing with him was about as big a thrill as I ever had. I'm still an old time fiddler at heart, but that Texas swing gets me going.
Bob Wills is still the King. I always hear him callin my name in some songs-Jess. Stoner alternative lyrics to Ida Red ,My eyes are red, my eyes are red, smoked too much dope, now my eyes are red, I always throw in some seriously wacked improv lyrics and my ol`lady says do you have to destroy every song?...Gawd. Dad gum ,ol Merle is an accomplished fiddle player too ,many talents
I was thrilled to see Merle on one of his last appearances, here in Tacoma. He was frail, he was thin and tired, but he teared up when he talked of my Dad, Tiny and Mom, Dean Moore. That voice was weak for a few measures, but he managed to sound marvelous, that deep baritone I loved to listen to. Playing with Merle was one of Dad's all time favorite accomplishments.
I saw him in Albuquerque on his last tour and i appreciated it sooo much that he made time for me... to see the legend. I will never get over it. Still sometimes i listen and CRY!!! Haha. My Hero.
I always was amazed when your Dad & Johnny Gimble played mandolin together, they played to each other on duets but like in this video, when it came to hot licks Johnny would stand back & listen! They're out in the cosmos serenading the stars now, Rest in Peace.
Shiboof- Your dad was Tiny Moore? Wow!...he was a great innovative musician. I, of course, love his work with Bob Wills but one of my favorite records he did was the one he did with Jethro Burns: "Back to Back".
I was in Fort Worth one evening back in the early 60s and stopped in a small venue on River Oaks Blvd for a quick refreshing cold beer. When I realized that Mr. Bob Wills was on the stage, I forgot about everything else and just sat there with a huge grin on my face and listened. Then some time later (mid-80s) I was privileged to meet and shake hands with the great Johnny Gimble.
As a 9 year old kid, I was absolutely thrilled when my Dad was transferred to Randolph A.F.B. outside of San Antonio! I grew up with Western Swing especially Bob Wills' music. I may not be a native Texan; but i got here as quick as I could! God Bless Texas!
Glad to see this in it's entirety instead of that chopped-up edit version by Radio Bob Richardson who decided to remove the 'dull' parts. Aint nothing dull about one second of this performance!
BTW, I'm from SE KS, only about 90 miles from Tulsa. Johnny Lee & band came to Pittsburg, KS when I was in high school (mid '50's) and he had some fabulous talent with him too. Bob played in Pittsburg, Nov 24, apparently in the late 1940's (see The Tiffany Transcriptions Vol 8) when I was almost too young to appreciate all that great music. Bob Wills certainly had an influence on my musical tastes..........jwe
we need stuff like this in dancehalls. i kid you not they still play bob wills on the radio, atleast where i am in rural america, its how i discovered this.

My whole family got to see one of Bob's last performances in Cuero, TX. Bob and the Playboys put on a hell of a show and we talk about it every time we get together. Todays country is just so hollow.
can I ask when that was. My Papaw was from Cuero and played steel guitar in the band in the late 40s and 50s
Todays country if you can call it that Is either all twangy or has a rap style Or they all sing thru their nose t
Turkey,Tx the end of April Celebrates Bob Wills Day
Merle was allways my favorite Country entertainer, hes even more special to me he and my little sister died on the same day.
What a great clip.. never knew Merle played fiddle.. Bob Wills is still the king ;)
Made im Brasil canta muito qui beleza
I wish musicians today could be so happy as these men were.... America was really special while it lasted.
I first learned of Bob Wills from a Red Steagall song, “Lonestar Beer & Bob Wills Music”.
When you you cross that old Red River hauss, it just don't mean a thing, 'cause when you're down in Texas.....
👑
Bob Wills is still the King. I always hear him callin my name in some songs-Jess. Stoner alternative lyrics to Ida Red ,My eyes are red, my eyes are red, smoked too much dope, now my eyes are red, I always throw in some seriously wacked improv lyrics and my ol`lady says do you have to destroy every song?...Gawd. Dad gum ,ol Merle is an accomplished fiddle player too ,many talents
WOW! So much talent on one stage! This was the best period of Merle's long, illustrious career. Thanks for the video...it was great!
Don't forget Merle's tribute to Jimmie Rodgers, "Same Train, Different Time." Merle was red hot with the talent these years.
Playing with Merle was one of Dad's all time favorite accomplishments.
why was Merle haggard so weak was he sick or something.
@@Royelsworth He had suffered with pneumonia that last year, yes. Merle lived like he played, all out.
This is one of my favorite videos on youtube. I watch it at least once a week. I was born 1982, so its before my time, but I love it.
Now this is what you call good music. If this don't get your feet to tapping nothing will. RIP Bob and Merl the world is a little darker without you.
Did you ever hear Merle imitate other artists gosh he’s good
That’s Bob’s fiddle Merle is playing there. Merle inherited it. I’ve seen him play it before. 🤠🤠🤠♥️♥️♥️
This is so good it's making me cry! Thanks all!
All these guys were the show for sure---Dolly didn't hurt anything though. Wonderful post, glad Merle got this together.
My dad played with Bob Wills and many others and I met Merle on numerous occasions.
Omg love it thats mighty fine fiddling an Merle ❤ your voice omg . you can swang with them
As a 9 year old kid, I was absolutely thrilled when my Dad was transferred to Randolph A.F.B. outside of San Antonio!
I have been going into a Playboys rabbit hole, and I am so glad I did.
Merle Haggard was a master band leader

He learned that from Wynn Stewart

BP right on, and Bob Wills a lead worth following, what a blessing.
He could be a tyrant, but he knew what he wanted.
He learned from Bob Wills.
The Playboys always had superlative musicians!
The ones who voted thumbs down are tone deaf, and probably young ,as today’s music is garbage, but it’s all they’ve been brought up on.
This is why I love TH-cam.
The Old men band was awesome. Thanks for uploading we love them
Thank you kindly for sharing!! Awesome 👍
Surely do miss those days..good music…good times….good people🥲
Beautiful Music, it seems Better today than 60 years ago when I first heard it...🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
BTW, I'm from SE KS, only about 90 miles from Tulsa.
HAIL yes! Gives me joyful chills, and sometahms even tears of joy. Thank you so much!
My grandfather loved Bob Wills. These ole dudes still swinging. Oh Lord. Merle was awesome.
Merle kept the Bob Wills memory alive, thank you, wherever you are now Merle I hope you meet up with Bob and play your fiddles
What a treat! Thanks for this Playboys and Merle Haggard "fix".
Thank you!!! It is like being transported to the past. What a show!
we need stuff like this in dancehalls. i kid you not they still play bob wills on the radio, atleast where i am in rural america, its how i discovered this.
The 14 guys (as of this post) who pressed thumbs down should have their thumbs removed.

There is nothing not to like about this...if the music is not your style, no reason to dislike it....
Such a wonderful display of talent in this highly spirited performance inspired by a hearty tribute to a great musician.
Merle was a California boy. Born, lived, and died there.
Make country music great again!!!!
💞🤠💞
No matter where you go or who you talk to, any place there is western swing ALL will agree without a doubt, Bob Wills Is Still The King. AND that will never change.
Old George Jones was right! Whose going to fill there shoes? This newer generation is NOT preserving our music the way it was meant to be! As our beloved stars such as George and Merle have passed (RIP) Who is going to keep the music alive?
Alan Jackson had a great song about that....Murder on Music Row.
Really sad the garbage they try to pass off as country music these days. Thang God for TH-cam.

What joy, to be able to give so much unalloyed pleasure to so many. Thank you playboys all. Where was Leon?
What an awesome group of musicians, so fun to watch and listen. Thanks a bunch !!
