you can hear a lot of music but there will never be another group like Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys the song Faded love is one of the greatest I have ever heard
Here I sit at 83 years old listening to Leon play and the memories go way back to a kid down in Garden City, out by Red Fork and West Tulsa near the ols Park Plaza motel and the Pig-in-Pen café...Can't go home again...
Definitely a trip down memory lane . Can't get any better then this. Real country singing, and awesome singers . Thank you so much for posting this. I'm 79 . Brings back a lot of memories
Lyrics to "Faded Love" and "New San Antonio Rose" were written by Bob's youngest brother, Billy Jack, who organized a band for Bob's amusement park, Wills Garden's dance pavillion northeast of Sacramento, from 1942 through 1952. Billy and Tiny Moore developed a faster 4/4 beat music to warm dancers and encourage beverage sales. It seems Bob got the box office and the band had the concessions. There were albums taken from wire recordings from the band's KFLA broadcast which reveal that as early as 1943, Billy Jack's band was playing pure 4/4 beat Rock and Roll, only they referred to it as "fast beat" or "beer selling music."
I got acquainted with a few of them ole boys back in the 80's and 90's when I was going to Bob Wills Day in Turkey. Ole Eldon Shamblin was one of em. He and some of em did a show here in Wichita Falls at one point and he remembered me and came off the stage to shake my hand. I was certainly humbled and impressed with him doing that.
I love all forms of Country Western! It can be Old Country. It can be Western Swing. It can be Country Blues. It can be Cajun. It can be Country Rock. I love it all!!
Once upon a time, I used to sit outside Cain's (too young and they wouldn't let me in) and listen to Bob and Playboys. What is left of them sounds just like they used to many years ago. Timeless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My dad was a huge Bob Wills fan starting back in the late 30s as a teenager...lasted throughout his life..."Faded Love" was his favorite song of all time...Every time I hear it live I promptly burst into tears. Mr. Leon kills it!
My mom used to take my sister and I, to daytime performance's at Cimarron Ballroom (now called the Akdar Theater). It was at 4th & Denver. Leon Mcauliffe and Bob Wills played there often. Around 1949-1951. It was great!! I was about eight or nine and my sister was a year younger than I.
As a kid my Dad and I used to fight over the radio. He said some day your gonna like country music. Well I heard this band and been hooked on country music ever since. Ive never been able to get the CD. Thanks for posting such a wonderful couple of songs. CLASSICS.
I own the barbershop in Turkey, Texas where Bob Wills was a barber in 1927 & 1928. Ham's Barber Shop is on Main Street in Turkey, TX and I am in the process of restoring it to what it looked like in 1925. We should be done with the restoration this year (2021). I also own the 1948 "Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys" tour bus parked on Main Street at my restored 1928 Phillips 66 Service Station. Turkey has the Bob Wills museum in town and a pretty large monument to Bob Wills in the city park.
I've been to Turkey !!!! Took pictures by his statue, and sign on the edge of town !!!! Did that to honor my Mom and Dad!!! They dearly loved Bob and the Playboys!!!! That's all I heard growing up !!!! Love it!!!!!
I'm 47 yrs old and enjoy just as others do..age has nothing to do with music..it's amazing grace for us to enjoy and cherish...wish I could have been there for a live concert..Faded 💕 Love..it's gives me chills
George is a very close second, along with Asleep at the Wheel. They've both done a great job of keeping interest in Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys alive for the younger generation.
Thank you so much for posting this!! I got to meet the gentlemen back in 1987 at Seminole State College in Seminole, Oklahoma; they were as down home, friendly and I had a blast. I could’ve listened all night but, Leon MacAulliff said they had to get on the road. The band signed my program ☺️ and I don’t let anyone touch it - it’s framed and not in light. At one point Al Stricklan stopped the show so I could take his picture!
I'm the bored-looking kid in the blue shirt in the first couple of frames. Believe me, I wasn't bored when they played Steel Guitar Rag! Still my favorite song to this day.
When I was 12 someone put a nickel in a juke box in Cafe I was eating in with my dad and that was the first time I heard Faded Love, an instrumental record of it In Roscoe Texas.
I believe this may be at Roundup, Oklahoma. They had a matinee and evening concert. I recall as the curtain went up the crowd gave them a 5 minute standing ovation before they played the first note. It was great. I went to both shows. Never forget it.
This may have been Al Strickland's last show have to study that one but it wasn't the incorporated Texas Playboys last show or show. Great Video. I was playing with Leon when he passed what a great man and educated musician. Eldon and Leon started twin parts that were inspirational to the Allman Brothers and more.
Howdy! Al Strickland passed shortly before this performance. The Playboys agreed that when one of the first of the original group died, they would stop performing as the Playboys. This show in Ft. Worth in June 1986 was supposed to be their last, but they did play more shows.
My mom use to tell me stories about a short man with a fiddle and a cigar that use to visit her dad in Sugartown, Louisiana back in the late 30s, and early 40s, where he and my grandpa would pick and fiddle and Faded Love was the one they played the most.
Howdy! This concert was supposed to be their last, but they did play together for several more years. This performance is at the old Ft. Worth Convention Center in June, 1986. Thanks for all the great comments!
James Shambling, I know your Dad was from Cyril, Oklahoma!!!! I think the city stadium is named after him. Seems like they used to have an Eldon Shamblin day every year!!! Love his music and of course the Bob Wills and Playboys music!! My Mom and Dad worshipped Bob Wills music, so I heard it a lot when I was young!!! My husband and I went through Turkey, Texas a few years ago, and I took pictures!!! Loved it!!!
Simply monumental! How many contributed to that sound and how long it took to build! A genuine work of art by Bob Wills. " Immortal" nails it! Many thanks to jsham66!
Many thanks jsham66 for posting this whole final series concert of the Texas Playboys. I did not know about them and stumbled here by accident. Now I know why these boys were, and still are, very much loved by those who grew up with their music. I agree with luvaguitaror2's comments - "simply monumental", "immortal" - and I'll add my own "pure magic". But then words just don't/can't sum them up do they? The only thing to do, really, is just keep going back and hit that replay button :-)
My pa paw played fiddle for Bob Wills during B W'S career ,,,, Years later 70's ,,, I'd go to pa paw's house with my guitar.. We'd sit in his living room and he would play this song note for note on his fiddle while i played the guitar. a jam session lol..Pa paw lived behind a Shamrock gas station ... He'd give me a 5.00$ bill and ask me to get us some beer And we would play Faded love over and over,,,I guess he missed ma maw ..this was years ago... Love you Pa paw ,,Man !!! You and ma maw are truely missed
I remember dancing in a place "Gruene Hall" that he played often, . We had a country band back in the 80's and played both of these songs and other Bob Wills tunes. I used to really like to play Texas swing on the Bass and can still play all these songs today.
I own property in Blanco County ,TX and have been to Gruene Hall many times over the years. I own the barber shop in Turkey, Texas where Bob Wills was a barber in 1927 & 1928. I'm in the process of restoring the barber shop (Ham's Barber Shop) back to what it looked like in 1925. The restoration should be done this year (2021). My grandmother Ollie Camren would play this song 'Faded Love' well into her 80;s, She lived to age 97. I have her fiddle that she played along with the old 'coffin box' case.
What I can see it's Leon McAuliffe who makes the introIt's the same words he used for Tompall Glaser's version of this song. This is one of my top 10 songs and I think Tompall's version is the very best.
It's a Quad neck Fender Stringmaster; the only one made in cimarron red; the push buttons are replaced by 4 switches. Leon's style is awesome, really an execellent steel player! Great musicians!
On October 1st 1977 I carried Leon's 'widow maker' 4 neck Stringmaster from the Wagon Camp stage out to his rental car in the parking lot of Knott's Berry Farm after he and the Texas Playboys recorded their 'Live and Kickin' album for Capitol Records.
My daddy would sing bob wills songs to me as a child and I grew up dancing with daddy to theses same songs I would give anything to dance one more set with my daddy and bob wills
