I started listening to Merle haggard in the first grade, and later in my life, I was able to attend 7 of his concerts in Tucson az and in Sierra Vista az, . He was a big part of my lifestyle and still remains that way now.
The best concert I ever went to was Merle Haggard. He made you feel like the concert was just for you even though you were sitting in the nose bleed seats.
Ironically enough, when Merle passed away, I was in jail serving the minimum (10 days) for a DUI conviction. I was more than double the legal limit, and I remember the judge telling me that the law required him to impose the sentence. The Hagg going to his reward while I was behind bars put alot of things into perspective. I've always loved his performances and songwriting--but that experience will forever be with me because of Merle's passing...
I had the honor of seeing Merle and his band play in 2006 opening for Bob Dylan. Love of my life also with me. And it was my birthday. Great day… RIP Merle.
His speaking voice sounds so much like my grandad - the accent, the languorous rhythm, even the slight smacking noise of his mouth between sentences - that I watch videos of Merle to hear him again. What’s more, grandpa turned me on to the music I love - from Hank, Merle, and Johnny Cash, to Townes and John Prine. I miss you, sir!
I bought tickets to see Merle at the McCallum theater in Palm Desert, California. I arrived at the concert and Merle's sons opened for him. After his sons were done performing, it was intermission time and I couldn't wait for Merle to come out. I thought the intermission was going on longer than an intermission usually does. After a while, the manager of the theater came out and told us that Merle had fallen ill and wouldn't be able to perform. Merle was then taken to a local hospital and was admitted for what was reportedly pneumonia. Ticket holders had the option of getting a refund or rescheduling. I chose to reschedule because I really wanted to see Merle. So they rebooked a date and when they rebooked, the ticket holders from the previous concert were able to get tickets to the rescheduled show. Shortly before the new concert date, Merle cancelled again due to illness and died a short time late. So I never got to see Merle perform in person. Merle has always been one or my favorites.
Man you message really stuck me. Merle is by far the greatest talent country music has ever seen. Wish you were able to see him brother that really bums me out.
Yep, original, honest,,the real deal. Respect! You can see the deep discernment in his gaze, almost like it penetrates right through you. The real deal!
Education is good but you can be wise and knowledgeable without ever going to college. But they want you to follow their rules.. I say, be yourself. And do what you love.
a reporter asked cash one time, why do you have the same tune on every song? and everybody else don't. he said, because they are still looking for it, I found it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I was drunk The day my mom Got outta prison I went To pick her up In the rain But before i could get to the station In the pickup truck She got runned over By a damned old train.

I am a big country music fan, I have been listening to this music for 80 years, and I think he was the best there has ever been
Absolutely !!
I'm 74. I listen to every genre except classical and most raps. Merle is one of my favorites.
I haven't always been "a Dan Rather fan". But I gotta say, this series Rather has done with Musicians has been *INCREDIBLY* great.
I can't believe Dan gets to meet all these stars. The interviews are so much fun.
One legend admiring another.😊😊
Well said.
Merle is a goddamn legend. Saw him once and was just amazed at how cool he truly is.
Wish I could have.

Watched this on tv when he was still alive. Great singer!!! ❤
"The Real Deal", thxs for sharing...
Merle didn't have much of a formal education, but he was a pretty sharp man.
Sometimes you learn more off the streets than from school, his song “I take a lot of pride of what I am” explains it well
Education has nothing to do with intelligence.
He was a smart man. Talented and smart.
Education = indoctrination
Education is good but you can be wise and knowledgeable without ever going to college. But they want you to follow their rules.. I say, be yourself. And do what you love.

@daviddiven1640 🤣 glad to hear someone else these days enjoy some John Prine. It's a little cliche but Paradise is one of the best songs ever written.
