    I like the printing strategy - it reminds me of book printings. If you want to be a collector, then you collect the rare printings, or rare editions, but you can always get a cheap paperback printing of a book to enjoy. Something I wish WotC would do...

    • @tylerashcroft847
      @tylerashcroft847 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It's not really what they're doing. What they are trying to do is make many "first edition" prints - prints for value to make them money. The equivalent of making a paperback version would be something like downshifting the rarity and printing it in a standard or unlimited print-run set. This would make the key game pieces affordable while keeping premium printings as collectible. They'll never do it, though. I also get that lots of people would be upset at the overall value drop (I think even the premium printings would decline in value as a result), but at the end of the day your collectible is a piece of card oard, not a leather-bound tome 🤷

    I can’t for the life of me understand why some people get so bent out of shape with FaB. If nothing else, I want it to succeed to create competition for MtG. Lack of competition is how you end up with companies trying to extract every penny they can.

      @r1b3y38 3 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      Absolutely. Based on what the Professor has shown in this video, it seems like FaB could be a viable MTG competitor. I love MTG but like Nvidia for PC gaming, they need checked, and checked hard. There is a desperate need for competition in the TCG space to drive prices down, and yes the investor card-sharks can go shove it.

    A great comment about FaBs Legendary Equipment vs Magic's Fetchlands, comparing card games they both have prices on total optimisation, however with Magic I find some of the fun for me exists in using non-optimal cards. The development team have also made the brilliant Dev-estation series which highlights how invested they themselves are in playing this game and I can imagine less optimal versions of the tunic are on their way in future sets. All that to say, a great video!

  • @xerodight2057
    @xerodight2057 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I love this game and I love how most of the expensive cards can be used universally. The pacing of this game is a perfect mix between YuGiOh and MTG IMO. The only complaint I have is exactly what's said in the video is that some of these cards like tunic, does not have a cheaper version. And although you don't need need it, even casuals or people who aren't pros still want to have what's the best out there and feel like they're part of the scene in a small small way. So I would like some of these expensive 1 copy cards to at least be under $50 and 3 copies cards under $25 if they're not gonna have cheap versions. And especially a game that isn't as big as YuGiOh/pokemon or doesn't have as much creator content and info on it, new players are not gonna know what the best budget option is so when they see these important armor pieces of these decks being $80 a pop and $80 each for something like CnC, it just drives them away instantly. Although the game is amazing, this quick glance and quit scenario that happens can keep it from really growing past collectors and semi-core players who can spend the evening at a local shop.

    I know one of the big complaints I hear from people is in regards to legendary cards. Some people feel they are just too rare and that they are required for top end play. While I think the price on some is a bit too high for unlimited cards (IE Mask of Momentum and Arcanite Skullcap) I think a more important issue is the lack of budget options for a lot of classes. I feel legendary equipment should still be rare and should still be impactful, but we just need more budget options to compete with them. LSS seems to know this and are releasing competitive equipment in each set. Monarch did a great thing with offering great generic equipment like the Time Skippers (which can replace the Illusionist legendary) and the Gallantry Gold for Warriors (which can be a budget replacement for the Braveforge Bracers).
    Are these cards the absolute best in slot? No, the legendary cards are more powerful and offer repeatable effects. Can you still play the game and have a fighting chance with the budget equipment? Sure, it's the same as playing with a budget deck of any game.

    I appreciate this video, because I have more than a little skepticism about FaB. This answered a lot of my questions, although I don't think I saw the part in the video where you addressed the concerns that FaB's value is being driven artificially by a group of investors/collectors. I mean, that seems pretty transparently to be the case.
    If you (or anyone) could offer a rational reason why a 2-year-old card game has ANY cards that command prices in the tens of thousands of dollars, I'd love to hear it. I watched Magic's value grow organically for the past 25+ years, and while market trends aren't necessarily the same today as they have been over that time, FaB's comparatively meteoric rise in value throws up all kinds of red flags.

    • @bvbftw
      @bvbftw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its something that doesnt have to do anything with the game itself. We are in an era where potential is heavily influencing the price of certain assets (and cardboard/collectables is a new type of asset money is going into with the growing amount of money(printing) and its need to find a home to not inflate the prices of daily needs like food to heavily). You can see it in sports with rookie cards. Some prices of rare modern rookie cards are higher than prices of rare vintage veteran cards with multible mvp titles and championships already under their belt. Some collector OGs litterally flip these new hyped cards to reach their vintage collecting goals. In Pokemon the new secret rare rainbow foil whatever card goes for more raw than a graded psa9 first edition wotc vintage holo. In crypto new ICOs shoot up in value from the start because people dont want to miss out on the next big thingy 100000x return bitcoin type of investment. You can straight up trade some 2 year old yeezys for game worn signed shoes of michael jordan. and there are many more examples. flesh and blood first edition is just another one of so many. its sad but thats how the investing world nowadays works.
      But imho thats not the games fault. The game is not less fun to play or less well made just because people also use it for asset speculation. And people like the Prof should be the ultimate proof that the game itself is legit. People like Rudy might have different intentions behind talking about the game who knows. But there are more and more TCG veterans with no financial interests which talk about the game in a positive manner. Just because the game is good. And it would be sad if people miss out on trying to play the game just because some investors also shill it. they could just grab some blitz decks for 10$ and try it out. if they dont like it they atleast supported their lgs by buying some product. if they like it they can invest some more and build a better deck and see how it goes from there. I personally played MTG half of my life. But in the end I love playing TGCs. And imho its important to stay open minded even in your hobbies. So I tried FaB with my friends at our local TGC game store and I must say its just great. It brings something new to the table and gave me a feeling I had the first years playing MTG until some kind of routine kicked in. I mean MTG is not my wife which I am cheating on.I love it but I can also try out other things and with FaB it was definatley worth it. And it would also have been worth it if I didnt like it because then I atleast would have given it a shot :)

    Would love to see the long(ish)form take on MetaZoo. Its definitely heavily marketed as a collector first trading card game, but the preconstructed decks are super affordable, and the gameplay is a genuinely fresh take on MTG meets old-school YuGiOh, with their own twists in the form of meta effects (largely just play with 4 enabled per deck, or ignore them) and the terrain cards that you can use to try and swing the tides in your favor. It has had a hell of a time breaking into a lot of LGS' because of the pushback from owners who don't want to attract the collector crowd and *shivers* ...the NFT boys...

Old YGO has been so power crept and obliterated by Modern YGO (hell even my definition of modern is like 2014 so it's basically irrelevant too) so hard that yall don't even remember it anymore lol. Ole Magic formats are different games of Magic. Old YGO is a different fucking game entirely. GOAT is damn near diametrically opposed to how modern YGO works. WotC has reduced support to the competitive scene and LGSs over the past few years and shifted their support to places like Amazon. It’s mostly a tactic implemented by soulless suits at Hasbro that don’t really care about their products, customers, or subsidiaries as long as they’re making increasing profits and pulling in big bonuses. Just bought a playset of every common card in the current 9 sets. I'm in deep, but not really. (cost me next to nothing)

    Magic cost way to much up here in Canada. Just bought my first two blitz decks for the price of one planeswalker deck.

    Sometimes, I feel as though you are the person who chooses to remain in captivity so you can help other prisoners escape the chains of WotC.

    Super well thought-out and level-headed video. I'm happy to see you trying to clear up misconceptions that have been blown out of proportions, while still giving honest critiques at the same time. The Internet needs to take note: this is how you do it.

    It is definitely a lot cheaper to build a FaB unlimited deck than a top tier standard or recently out of standard magic deck. Breeding Pool is $30-$40 a piece as an example. You literally need hundreds of dollars in just lands in most cases. Not knocking magic, I love the game but to say you need thousands of dollars to build a FaB deck is false.

      I made a competitive deck under 15$ just a week ago. Made a video about it on my channel too. And this is coming from a high ranked player =). Playing on a budget is no issue in this game. Legendaries only marginally improve winrates.

      I think this is actually pulling people towards the game- they see it's financial viability longterm thanks to the collector boom of the pandemic and also its relatively cheap entrance with the unlimited sets.
