How Trump won the popular and electoral college vote

  • From Ronald Reagan to Franklin D. Roosevelt to Barack Obama,, winning presidential candidates have run on optimistic messages. Trump, however, used a more negative rallying cry saying the U.S. is a “nation in decline.” Doris Kearns Goodwin, the historian and presidential biographer, joined Boston Public Radio to discuss why this messaging won Trump the popular and electoral votes.

I think Donald Trump is a horriible person. I looked up his biography. He was kicked out of high school for bad behavior (he still has it!); so no high school diploma. He has a college degree which his father purchased for him, but he never went one day to college. Not only is he horrible, he is uneducated and "Stupid"! Let's start impeachment. I am 85 years old and and I do not want to see our wonderful country go to pot because of a horrible person.

@@trwent You are ignoring the obvious ... it was an epic failure of voter turn out, which is the fault of the operational leadership of the democratic party. Biden got 81 million votes in 2020 and Harris only got about 75 million votes in 2024. And that does not even consider the at least 3-5 million new voters from 2020 to 2024.
If the DNC had competent professional operational leadership, such as a Mike Bloomberg, or a Steve Ballmer, or a Mark Cuban instead of nice guy political hacks at the operational leadership level .... they would almost certainly have won in a landslide. Once again the democrats wasted billions of dollars on useless advertising instead of devoting those resources to grass roots orgainizing in every state (like Stacy Abrahms has done in Georgia). Reportedly advertising affects less than 1/3 of 1% of voter decisions ...ie. a waste of billions of dollars.
The democrats have been running the same old tired and failed political playbook for decades now .... advertise, advertise, advertise with little to none of a consistent ground game from day to day in every state. They will continue to lose (when they should easily win and dominate) until they develop a consistent and professional strategic plan. That requires top notch operational leadership, which they clearly do not have.

@@trwent Yeah, Biden certainly hurt her, but the problem is that 1) she couldn't separate herself from HER OWN PAST, and 2) the only way she separated herself from Biden was essentially pledging to do MORE than Biden did when it came to all of his least popular policies. To me, it's kind of like if Chris Watts and Ted Bundy were running against each other and people said that Ted Bundy didn't win because he didn't separate himself enough from Chris Watts. Actually, he did separate himself. Chris Watts is unpopular because he is a murderer. Ted Bundy's distinction is that he murdered MORE people. That isn't going to get him more votes. It's going to get him fewer votes. The one thing that might let him win if he were going up against Chris Watts is that he didn't to our knowledge kill young children, but if he is going up against any non-murderer he is still going to lose. I felt Harris actually did distinguish herself a lot from Biden, but all she proved to me was that I was wise to want Biden to beat her the first time they ran against each other because he is a much better candidate than she is.

Using the DOJ to investigate criminal actions that have been approved by grand juries, where there has to be enough evidence to proceed with a trial. Evidence was produced in the civil sexual assault trial where he was convicted by a jury of his peers. Evidence was presented and that is why he was convicted of 34 counts of felony fraud by a jury of his peers. It is not retribution when there is a mountain of evidence and juries were hand picked to be as neutral as possible. There were Republicans on those juries. Democrat voters have not been allowed to choose their candidate in at least 5 presidential elections,
      I'll explain:
-Kamala was clearly installed, after the actual candidate w votes (Biden) was forced out.
-They also used lawfare and slander to force out RFKjr,
-2020, Bernie probably would have won if the dnc didn't arrange for the ENTIRE field to drop out ON THE SAME DAY and rewarded them later w admin slots. JOE wasn't the Dem people candidate until they were told he was.
-2016, BERNIE DEFINITELY would have been the nominee of the people voting was how they pick the candidate.
-2008, Hillary would have been the candidate if they Went with the vote getter... She won the Florida primary by landslide and the dnc disqualified the results by saying that fla held the vote on the wrong day and then selected Obama.

To the point regarding social media: When newspapers dominated the media landscape, 'yellow' journalism was rampant. Hearst literally started a war with 'fake' news. It took decades for newspapers and then radio to develop professional standards...which briefly carried over to TV (most of the early TV news people came out of radio). Many of my friends reject my suggestion that any republicans will do anything to oppose Trump, but wait and see, we may be right about this. Not much happens in congress without the Senate Majority Leader approving it and it appears that the next senator in that position is not going to be a Trump supporter. All around us, people and groups are popping up that have influence in our government and Trump will have to fight against a growing number of opponents if he tries to do wrong by our beloved country.

Excuse me, but did you LISTEN to the candidates and voters? Consistently,, Republicans and their supporters talked about REAL ISSUES, about how Democrat policies negatively affect our lives in real, tangible ways. Our desire for a prosperous economy, less crime, secure national border policy is not "nostalgia". Republican and crossover voters repeatedly gave clear examples of why we believe Trump policies worked for the 4 years during his first term, and we reasonably believe will work now.
You may not like President Trump but a presidential elections is not a contest to decide "who's nicer", it is a leadership contest. Yet all Kamala Harris and Democrat voters would talk about was their "feelings" based on their belief in Marxist and neo-Marxist (woke) ideals. And that horrible cackling laugh of Kamala Harris. A number of observers including behavior experts have concluded that her behavior while campaigning was characteristic of an alcoholic.
Her track record of career advancement based on favoritism starting with Willie Brown, of failure to handle the border security issue and failure to address policy, ACTUALLY MATTERS to American voters. Did you not hear her admit to Anderson Cooper that she finds it difficult to speak extemporaneously about policy? She consistently avoided answering specific questions throughout her campaign. She projected weakness and inexperience. For me personally, the thought of this silly woman sitting across from power-mad world leaders during critical negotiatuons was very unsettling. She is so clearly unfit for command.

Yeah, it doesn't. You keep telling us he'll do all these things, and then he doesn't do them, and what we got was a stable economy and stable global situation. If you all keep claiming it now, if you claim there won't be another election, if you claim he'll execute all these different groups, and he doesn't, then what about JD Vance are you going to say that anybody believes?
