DON'T BUY!? 3 Reasons Why Mystery Box Japan Crate is NOT Worth it

  • Today we will unbox and review Japan crate, a monthly subscription box for Japanese Snacks. Are subscription boxes worth it? This box should contains DIY candy kits and special edition Japanese food. There are 3 main reasons this mystery box of snacks disappointed me: 1. poor value 2. bad customer service 3. expired items
    I ordered these boxes back at the end of March and only received them in the last week prior to recording. The customer service for this box were terrible, only copy/pasting "which box are you missing?" and then marking the cases as solved. When I put paypal protection, they said they can't help me if the protection is active, so I cancelled it and then they ignored me for 5 weeks. On the 5th week, my boxes finally arrived, with expired items. Additionally, these items are NOT of value, nor are they the best Japan has to offer.

    My mouth literally dropped open when I saw the "Animal Land Chocolate." That's 100% false advertising. Even the description is purposefully vague so they can defend themselves later. There's no excuse at all...
    Edit: Also, NEVER EVER CLOSE A PAYPAL CLAIM. You can't open it again and are completely defenseless afterwards. I know some people close their claims to be nice to the seller, but you almost always get screwed in the end. It feels bad to be the "bad" guy, but if you never plan to do business with the seller ever again, it's really not a big deal. I'm so sorry Jackie!

    This box is why I am so glad to have friends and family in Japan. My dad had to wait to send my family our usual snack parcel due to Japan having stopped any international shipping back in February. I get a massive box of my kids' favorites that is literally double to size of the premium Japan Crate food box for the same price (shipping included). The only reason why I still have him send me certain candies is because they are regional specific and none of my Asian supermarkets carry them.

      Or if you are a westerner of Japanese ancestory, try asking if any family members (even if they're distant) if they can send a care (sampling) package to you.
      I'm fortunate to live somewhere where there are places that sell some of the Japanese snacks and drinks. (I tried a bottle of Japanese Pepsi once, I think it was less sweet than the US version. I would like to see that strawberry coke in it's prime though [in terms of sell by date - aka non expired])

      If you want these items at the right prices and don’t want to go to an Asian grocery store you should get the app yamibuy. The drink and the Sakura Oreos are the proper prices though the mini candies aren’t available, only in big packages but proper pricing. Shipping is only $5.00 at most, AND they are super fast. I always get my stuff in 3 days or less even though shipping is supposed to be a week. They are so efficient and have great products.

    i ordered the 25 dollar box from japan crate in i think november. just one box which would be the december box.
    it was supposed to deliver early january the latest, and i gave it extra time due to slow shipping. but by mid january, i was mildly concerned, and contacted customer service for help.
    surprisingly, they were very understanding and helpful, and confirmed my address to send a replacement crate for the one that never arrived. they said to contact them if the new box didn’t arrive by february 21st.
    it has yet to arrive.. so i sent them a follow up email. very respectful, of course. i couldn’t be sure if it was their fault or not. but it bothers me that they still haven’t responded.

As an American whose never been to Japan and is used to American prices being fairly high, I'm ignorant of how much these items would cost. Maybe it would be more cost effective (and hey, the VIEWS) if you did a box swap with Sharla - with no travel I bet there's plenty of Canadian things she's running out of... Plus, everything would at least be Sharla-approved!

      They used to be good. I subscribed a couple of years ago and it was alright but this year has been bad in terms of value. They got really cheap with products as she showed, and they did NOT handle the pandemic problems well whatsoever. Most people can understand issues if you communicate. They're lack of communication and simple pocket grabbing for shipping costs was unacceptable. They didn't even ask. It should have been an option at that point if you still wanted it. I asked them to simply cancel my subscription because I didn't find the extra shipping fair or worth it and they said no, but they waived that shipping fee for me and then I unsubscribed.

    I’ve been interested in Bokksu and Tokyo Treat. Have never been to Japan and don’t have access to Japanese treats here. I would love a similar video on those boxes! 😍

  • @sym837

    Wow, I just saw this video and it kinda opened my eyes! I was always just super excited with my Japanese snacks subscription boxes that I never stopped to think "hey, is this actually worth it?"
    And you're completely right! I've been to Japan as well and all these candies are so so cheap, you could buy them in bulk and still pay a lot less than what you pay for these subscription boxes!
    I'm glad I watched this video because, as the pandemic stopped me from going to Japan again last year, I was so tempted to get one of these boxes.. bur I honestly probably won't now. I think I'll hold off until I can go back to Japan and just spend my money there ahah
    Thanks for the great video (I know I'm super late seeing it) - you're funny AND informative! Love to see it :)

    Curious to know if the expired products is due to the pandemic, I know shipping delays have been horrendous but yet you would think the company would think ahead and choose things with longer shelf life.

    • @ShineHatfield
      @ShineHatfield 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. The products in Japan have wayyyyyy shorter shelf-life

      Jackie ordered it in March. The expiration date on the bottle was March. There is no possible way the box could have arrived when the soda wasn't expired.

    • @watsername
      @watsername 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Even with slightly shorter expiry dates non super specilast like home made or other non commercial soda has a long enough expiry date to not send something that literally expires the date you send it...

    • @firegodessreiko
      @firegodessreiko 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The product was practically expired when they put it IN the box, actually. The long mailing time didn't help, but the fact remains that they really did put expired product in the crate to begin with. I doubt it's malicious, but definitely negligent.

    Makes me wonder if the "company" is one guy in his parent's basement buying things at those dollar stores and candy shops and throwing them into boxes. Then charging for the "novelty experience" and hoping North Americans wouldn't know the difference! Great way to make his rent money for mom and dad so he can keep gaming in solitude.... Very sketchy. Jackie, you've been a salted!! 🧂🧂 🤬 Of course this visualization is based on a whole lot of North American stereotypes. 🤣😂

    • @Yumichan62
      @Yumichan62 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I bet even a box of a guy in his basement would be better. I mean, he would have to go out to buy stuff so maybe it at least wouldnt be expired XD This is just super sas and the reason I never tried to buy one of those food boxes before. I just dont trust people.

      @@Kreative_Rainbow But for real, I would be so mad if I paid so much money and got this box. Like, most of us as a private person could sell better boxes of their countrys candy.

  • @koifish0048
    @koifish0048 4 ปีที่แล้ว +101

    it would make sense to spend a little bit more than what you'd exactly receive for the fact of it being another country so yeah obvi they want a bit more money back then what we get but the fact its 35 and shipping? it could have at least been worth 35 US dollars or in your country, Canadian dollars. I could probably even go to a walmart here find some cool japanese candy for cheaper. I in fact just bought 8 items for about 17-18 dollars the other day, but it was also full sized items... they could have done better.

      Totally with you on that. I mean, I get that import fees would make the products more expensive than when you directly buy them from Japan.
      But it still should at the very least cover the price of the box. Here, even if you up the prices a bit, it doesn't even come close to that.
      I thought Japan Crate was a good box, but after that video I'm pretty disgusted.

    Above all the "exclusive" coke was expired. WOW you should TOTALLY sue this company or someone should!

    • @randomstuff-qu7sh
      @randomstuff-qu7sh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Suing wouldn't be a valid option. The soda was 2 months past its sell by date. The box took 5 months to arrive. Try to sue the company and they'll point out it was a good soda when they shipped it.
      Charging extra for "express shipping with tracking" is the one thing they could be nailed for since charging for a service that wasn't provided is fraud. Still, that's not really something economic to sue over. You'd spend way more on legal fees than you could ever hope to recover if you win. It makes more sense to dispute via Paypal if the company itself won't make good.

    THANK YOU for making this video!!! I was going to ask for a month or two of Japan Crate for my birthday! You just saved me some money and disappointment! I'll find another way to get my hands on some Japanese snacks. The Asian markets here are pretty limited in snacks and candies. If you want anything more than Pocky or Ramune, you have to go searching pretty hard for it. THANKS AGAIN!!!
