- Unboxing a mystery box from a popular art and crafts store. This company contacted me to send me some mystery art supplies. I love using posca pens, polymer clay, acrylic paints, oil paints, and different art craft mediums so I was very curious what Joann's art craft store was going to send me. Let's unbox, review and make our own diy craft from this mystery box chalenge.

Joanne's actually used to be exclusively "Joanne's Fabrics" and they were pretty much entirely focused on Sewing/Quilting. They recently rebranded a bit to be "Joanne's Fabrics and Crafts" and "Joanne's Etc", and they have a lot more crafting stuff instead of just sewing supplies. They still focus mostly on sewing though!
Jo-Ann's ECT goes back more than recently. There's been one near me for at least 20 years....
It's cool and large. Only about a quarter is fabric with only maybe half being dedicated to fabric crafts type supplies. As a seamstress and a crafty person, one of my favorite places to go, including over other closer Jo-Ann stores
Ohhh, I've been wondering why they rebranded to just "JoAnn's" recently. I saw the name change and was confused. That makes sense now. They're trying to legit compete with Michael's now. Took 'em long enough.
Joann has been more crafts since i could remember. I’m 22 soon to be 23 in a couple days 😩 so it’s been a bit since I’ve been to ours but I know they had markers, clay everything basically
I’ve been getting paints and other craft supplies at Joann’s since I was in high school (which was the late 90s).
I think a lot of people blew them off as “just a fabric store” because it was called Joann Fabrics.
But they’ve been my go-to craft store in my town for ages. They definitely have the most fabrics of anywhere in town anymore, but it’s not even half the large store.
I’m a quilter and I was upset when they got rid of ours. I refuse to shop at Hobby Lobby so it’s Michael’s and the one or two locally owned quilt shops near me.
I'm surprised that JoAnn reached out to you, due to the fact it's mostly a fabric store. If you are into cosplaying this is the store for you. I go there all the time because I'm a fiber artist. Yes you can find other supplies there for different crafts. I picked up some really cool glass beads that I use to embellish a fabric mermaid doll I was making for my niece
I was surprised they had a store line; but it makes more sense as I see They've changed their name from JoAnn Fabrics to JoAnn Fabric & Crafts. I really hope they keep their main focus on sewing though, it's my city's only store that's stocked with everything one needs for sewing including classes.
I mostly go there for fabric and sewing supplies too, but I got some resin supplies there just yesterday. In my neck of the woods, it's JoAnn, A.C. Moore, or Michael's.
It's pretty cool that they did because that would absolutely be a smart move if they continue this as a monthly box thing.

Really? I use to live in a city were the joanns had an ok selection of fabric but had a huge selection of yarn, scrap booking and painting.
I'm not a huge fan of the airbrushing on this piece, but I absolutely love the overall idea! I'll try to do something similar with Yuumi from league of legends, it's such a cute concept!
I agree! I thought the air brushing wasn't the right tool for the job if that makes sense. The idea was good though!

@@lazyhomebody1356 usually no. my friends epilepsy is triggered by christmas lights that flash, so basically all of december they can't go out after dark without risking a seizure

FYI: There is a product from 3M called Scotch Create double-sided removable tape. It's intended for use in photo albums but works great for temporarily but securely attaching things for paper crafts. I can send you some if you can't find it there. PS: In Minnesota, where I live, 3M is a major presence. Both my sisters and an aunt worked there and my family was availed of MANY 3M products over the years!
PSS: 3M stands for Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing and they invented Post-It notes! 😁

3M is way cool. I grew up just 1 mile west of the tall, glass 3M building on 94 & McKnight Road in St. Paul. My dad was friends with several 3M employees. We used to have picnics at the 3M employee park in Lake Elmo. Great fun! Thanks for a trip down memory lane 😀

Ooh I work at a joanns so I was intrigued by this video right away, I don’t think I’ve heard of the company doing any type of subscription or promo art box but hey, I just stock shelves. ArtSmith I think is our generic brand for fine art supplies, we generally get big name brands for some products and then more joann-centric brands for others.
I also like the project you made, it looks cool all together and was a good repurposing of the small canvases that otherwise wouldn’t have been used! I’m pretty sure the seasonal stuff was more for aesthetic than suggestion given it was decorative items
That is fantastic! Using the easels to make the backing was an excellent plan to bring it all together.
I'm going to have to treat myself to some modelling paste and the mod podge stuff as October's art supply buy and see if I can manage anything remotely good with it.
My thoughts for these products is sculpting a tiny Bob Ross painting on one of the mini canvases.
The Mod Podge is a diamond glaze. That's why it dries so shiny. You can fill in bottle caps to make necklaces and such as you would resin. I've never used a paintbrush because it is self leveling so I just squeeze it straight from the tube. The fine tip let's you get into corners and little nooks. It's great stuff. It is meant to add dimension to your project as well. Multimedia and such. You did a great job using it as a flat glaze though. Modeling paste works best with thick stencils. You also thinned it out with the paint so paper was a tough choice. You can TH-cam. Lots of card makers use it.
That’s how I use the Dimensional Magic too. I was so worried it wasn’t going to work for holding the paper in place, like the regular Mod Podge does. Phew! Glad it worked out.

The second part of this video feels like you going back to your roots and i love it. Your new stuff is good don't get me wrong, but your early videos really inspired me to try new crafts and to use crafting as a type of therapy. Nice to see that streak still running through ☺
I would try molding the black sculpty onto the tiny canvas to make a roman type relief and then paint it.
Oooh and then paint it so it looks like the Pokémon !
I was expecting some of Joanns resin products. I’d love to hear Jackie’s opinion on some of the things that’ve shown up there in the last year.
I haven’t had a chance to try theirs or Michaels’ resin products. Every time I go to the store they’re completely sold out. Just empty shelves and endcaps.
Seems like everyone’s at least trying it, lol.
@@Annie_Annie__ the Michaels stuff is pretty good, though I haven’t tried the clear, because that’s never in stock, but the black and white are nicely transparent and cute well.
JoAnns hasn’t had trouble keeping it in stock where I’m at but the clear I’m not a fan of, it takes longer to cure and is sticky for awhile, but they had a whole bunch of colors over the summer and those were amazing. I bought every one I could find when they went on clearance a couple weeks ago.
So, I got the NerdECrafter kit, which came with Sophie and Toffee resin. Out of sheer curiosity, I did buy some Hildie & Jo stuff from JoAnn this week to compare. I am completely new to UV resin so YMMV but I have quickly concluded that Sophie and Toffee is superior in every way. I would also love to hear Jackie's opinion, though, because I barely know what I'm doing.
@@thewugglyump8045 I totally agree on the clear resin. I’ve also got 3D resin and colored jewelry resin from Hildie & Jo and I don’t see a difference between those and Sophie and toffees versions that were in the stained glass box.
Hobby Lobby and Michaels both sell Blue Moon Studios UV resin under their own branding and I find it’s almost as good as S&T just a little thicker than I’d prefer.

Joann would be absolutely ecstatic with what you created! Its not about "coloring in the lines" its more about "thinking outside the box" and I think you did a great job using the supplies you were given!
Most of our craft supplies comes from Joann's and Michael's, and then next would be Walmart and Dollar Tree. ToysRus used to carry some stuff but as you know, they no longer exist in the USA
Shout out to the Art Supply Store here in Syracuse! They not only have art supplies and craft kits but also a whole section focused on miniatures!
My favorite Pokemon are Tangrowth, Scolipede, and Magcargo! And my favorite Digimon is Kuwagamon

The Pokemon-themed mini canvas piece/s was/were EVERYTHING. Turned out so incredibly well. I love all the layers and depths and materials.

Hey JoAnn's, if you are watching, definitely do a monthly craft box. I would absolutely buy a monthly craft box and put that up on TH-cam. I think this idea is awesome.
When I did a painting with Yin-Yang on it I used an adhesive vinyl for my stencil and it came out perfectly, with the coat of mod podge it should prevent the sticky side from sticking to your paper as well 😺

My favorite Pokémon are Shellos, Squirtle, and Snubbull; I love water types, and Snubbull is just a gem!

As for my favorite Pokémon: Gengar (althoug I have soft spot for Haunter), Wailord (love whales) and Taurus -although I also like Tormine and Torterra.

I don't trust mystery boxes. But I enjoy watching Jackie make possible meme videos about mystery boxes. When I see the thumbnails for the videos it reminds me of memes. ☺️❣️ Love you Jackie. Thank you for everything you do. You make me smile and laugh. It helps me deal with my chronic illnesses. Happiness helps with dealing with pain. I use to be a yoga therapist and I did laughing yoga classes every Wednesday for my local mental health services. Mental health helped me so much. I am grateful. ❣️

As a crafter, I've learned to save most packaging. That ribbon and gold tissue paper? Going straight in my crafting supplies! Saves me money AND I feel good about not throwing stuff away or buying more than I need to. Steve McDonald Crafting and NexJen are just a couple channels here on TH-cam that make a lot of upcycling projects. I'd love to see Jackie give it a try, maybe a "garbage" only craft challenge!!

These came out so much more unique and interesting that I expected with little white canvases. Well done!
I love the dismantled easels as a backing! I really like your finished project, even if I’m not into Pokémon. As to animals, I have too many I love, but a few top ones are dogs, turtles, pandas, frogs, and zebras.
I’d have made spoopy wee spiders and bats with the clay to decorate the easels, painted little cartoony portraits of classic monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, the wolfman, etc. Then paint the easels to suit each character. I do a lot of nail art, so I like painting smol things!

I can consistently get Scupey Medium at Joann's so I'm happy. My closest one is getting a store remodel and it's currently a huge disaster- it has those nasty floor patches where they moved the huge aisle shelves and it grosses me out beyond my capacity and I literally can't force myself to walk over them. It's a whole thing. lol Micheal's is second but the closest one near me is meh. Surprisingly there are a couple of amazing thrift stores that regularly have a nice craft hoard that fill that void. I also have a Daiso near me which is always worth the stop.

I don’t know what it is called, but I love the white fox with multiple tails ( like a kitsune, the Japanese fox creature with 7 or 9 tails who can turn into a woman) . Foxes are my jam! Charmander ( the little dinosaur/lizard with the flame on the tail) is super cute too!

Never have shopped at JoAnn, for me it’s almost an hour drive to the closest one - luckily there is a Hobby Lobby and Michaels 20 minutes away 😅
I would have made A small black cat sculpture with the twinkle clay, then use one of the mini canvases as a base. I’d color the canvases similar to Starry Night with some black that way at different angles you see & don’t see that cat 🐈⬛

I live in Russia, and biggest craft store in my city (St.Petersburg) is Leonardo, and yes, prices do bite, especially if u don't have discount card as I do. My favorite is probably the small shops like Art-Kvartal and Palitra. Love u Jackie
Micheals, Joann, and Hobby Lobby are the craft stores here, but Hobby Lobby absolutely should not exist, and it breaks my heart every time I see a comment here saying someone shops there. They are so evil, on so many levels, and in so many ways. Sigh.

@@nfcapps They literally have religious language written into their employee handbook. They went to the Supreme Court and argued that the corporation is a person that is allowed to control women’s decisions on birth control. The founder is incredibly conservative and has been known to say he would discriminate in his hiring, if allowed. No LGBT+, no unwed mothers. The corporation literally stole ancient artifacts. This is just the tip of a huge radioactive iceberg.
joanne's is a bigger craft store here in america, along with michaels. we had ac moore but they all shut down a year or so ago. theres a joannes 20 minutes from me, they have a MASSIVE fabric section. seriously its half the store. and the other half is every other kind of crafting thing you could need. its really a great store in that you can get every single thing youd need for any craft/cosplay creation. the people working there are always so helpful too. thats awesome that they sent a box of goodies!

Modpodge, paint, and mica powders work together very well. It doesn't really affect the curing process either. I made a mixture and shredded cotton balls into it, and it made perfect foliage. I made tree leaves and bushes with said mixture.
The comic book craft was really cool. It was something I haven't seen yet. It was really cool.

Here in France, we used to have a chain called Loisirs et Création or Création et Loisirs. It had beads, moulds, paints, yarn, stickers… I could spend hours there! I now like Cultura, which sells DVDs, games, books, scrapbook stuff, stationery, art supplies, arts and crafts kits, and it’s not too badly priced!
In the US the top three are Michael's, Joann, and Hobby Lobby. I've never actually shopped at a Joann store. I like Michael's the best because of how easy it is to utilize their coupons.

Joanns and I have a love hate relationship. Before Hancock's fabrics went out of business, that was my preferred store, esp for fabric. Now that they are gone, joanns is the only fabric store around. No, I do not include hobby lobby bc their fabric selection is so small I rarely buy anything from there in terms of fabric/apparel construction.

Light coat of Rubber cement on the stencil back or a spray rubber removable adhesive, I think it is made by Elmer's in a blue and orange can, I've used it forever to do collage cut outs that I want to remove. Just read the directions I believe they give the specifics for stencil work. I have had great crispness in the line edge. I love lil canvas's...cute and you can make so many!! ❤️❤️
I loved this video, I get major inspiration from Jackie and her salty vids. I'm currently making a custom studio ghibli princess monoke diorama for my brother and Sans mask, and watching Jackie gives me creative juices for it

My town doesn't have a Joann's anymore. We have a Hobby Lobby and a Michael's for craft supplies (I guess Walmart too if you're desperate). Favorite Pokemon are Eevee, Kyogre, and Ditto (because it can be anything!). You could use the clay to make little spiders to climb around in your light up cobwebs.
This might be a bit of a random idea, but the back of the canvas would be such a cool thing to make resin art in. Like a little enclosure in the canvas. You could paint something on the canvas and then do the resin inside!
