Put a small piece of tape on your bench that indicates center of frame. Then keep your hands over the tape and you’ll always be in frame. Love your vids. Thank you.

Looks like Schaffer (moly grease) you repacked with. Moly is some tough stuff. Has really high shear strength. I'd just caution on overfilling the bearing. Most bearings are packed with a 40% fill I believe.
We use bearings packed with Mobil EP Polyurea grease. Actually "slings" considerably less than a classic Lithium Complex #2 and doesn't break down as fast. Just have to be cautious of rubber seals.
Great video. Lubrication is often overlooked and forgotten about.

Thanks! I filled to about what it had in there before. I put a small coating on the shell when I put it together and that's what squeezed out. I took it apart again and took some of that off and it was good to go.

Don't know how I missed this video. I didn't know they came apart like this. What is the name of those other live centers you mentioned ? Thanks again for all these great videos. I was doing a lot of wood turning on my other lathe, and I just replaced them when they got noisy.

I have one of those giant imports that you can't get close to the work. I just use my dead center and a lot of grease.

    Hi,
Nice job, this center seems to be a lighter duty one, cause the heavier duty ones will have thrust bearings.
This one will be good for a long time if you don't let dry out...
Just wondering, do your nose ever get itchy while repacking some bearings...?

I haven't had that issue. The only thing that ever really got to me was a motor /electrical cleaner i used once, Mr. Muscle, and sometimes the acid coil cleaner I use at work gets me just the right way.

    Greg,
With all that gunky grease in there, your live center was about to die! Is that a MT3 on the end of your live center? That looks like the black moly grease I used to repack the gear trains of the larger actuators I used to work on. Thanks for the video!
    Have a good one!

It has a Morse 2 taper on it. One of the drawbacks of the little Southbends.

Should be good for some time to come. Mine's been giving me issues lately as well but it doesn't have tapered bearings....gonna toss it and buy new this time.

Is it possible to reshape the point? I have an old J&S Lunzer with its point damaged that I would like to restore.

Yes. You can chuck on the shaft shown when he removed the bearing. Using a carbide cutter, take light cuts on the center to restore surface, or use tool post grinder.
