  • Although I already have a nice centre & several fixed centres too, I decided to inspect & resurrect some I had acquired a while ago. Now looking at these, I think they might have had a hard life.
SO I will check them over and if I feel they are too far gone I won't bother, or if it’s just bearings and the cost is not too much, I will rebuild.
This is a 4 part series.
Part one, • P1 Morse taper, lathe ...
With a Morse taper 3, This is probably the best feeling of all of them, I decided to strip it and find the bearings really just need a good clean & regrease, rebuild and ready to use.
In part two, • P2 Morse taper, lathe ...
I check out the largest of them, again a Morse taper 3. I suspect this has been rebuilt before & the bearings are in a very poor way, in-fact when I strip it I find an awful lot of swarf within the unit even behind the second bearing. This one for sure needed a set of bearings to bring it into life & once done it was good to go.
    Part 3, • P3 Morse taper, lathe ...
finds us looking at the two remaining centres, this pair look to be the same brand, although different sizes (morse taper 2 & 3). Looking at the smaller one, I found the centre of the unit to be totally missing, the nose (obviously) there & the tail of the shaft turns out to be there (although I did not realize all of this until I had finished the videos). SO where did the rest go! But either way it’s scrap.
The second one striped I decide this is repairable……
Part Four, • P4 Morse taper, lathe ...
I start rebuilding the live centre from Part 3, this turned out to need the front two main bearings, the 3rd tail bearing being in good condition. This again turned out to revive this unit into a usable condition.

I am quite surprised that this video has been up since 18 March 2022 with over 5,000 views and not one comment - until now. It was interesting to watch, and I may have learned something to boot. G'day

Only a small channel, and I do what I do because I enjoy doing it & if someone enjoys or learns a thing or two, that's great.
Thanks very much for your comment, it is appreciated.

Thanks for video. I have an old live center that is stuck. It’s on my to do list to see if I can salvage it. Your video will help. By the way, I too do the best I can with what I have. 👍

Really, if you’re going to work in something, you should begin with obtaining at least the minimum of proper tools. It makes me nervous to see what looks like potato’s on the same bench you’re working on a center.

Thats fine if you don't have to share space with others & can afford better facilities or equipment. Hence the rebuilding of the centers rather than purchase new.
Besides I dont use potatoes as tools 😅😀😃😄
But thankyou for your concerns, as per the War Grade ethos, I try my best with what I have.
