    When using this technique on large logs for bridges etc the frapping turns were wrapped whilst beating the knot with pick axe handles. This leads to a very secure and tight knot.

    Interesting, I always left a little extra on the first clove hitch and when finishing off I would use that to tie off in a reef knot. I felt like this let me make everything really tight. Never had any issues with it becoming loose.

    We always used pine and banana rope for our BSA lashing projects. For the long term projects, we made our own rope and used that.

    There are a lot of comments about using a constrictor knot instead of a clove hitch, but if you tighten this lashing the way you're supposed to, especially in the frapping, it will hold much more than you're likely to demand from it. Especially if you use paracord.

  • @bambam8541
    @bambam8541 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I would tie off the free ends of the clove hitch. Clove hitch is a great easy to tie knot but you have to secure both ends on any style of rope you use. Great video, going incorporate it into my next outing.

    Believe it or not with paracord if you use a few passes of French whipping in place of the clove hitch pulling hard tight with a overhand knot to kick it’ll grab really well

  • @dimtgco1428

    I always wanted to know the right way to do that. I always neglected the frapping turn. I guess that's why it always fell apart. Ok. I'm ready to star in the next " Cast Away".

  • @Bluuplanet
    @Bluuplanet 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    "...staying on the outside of the wrap I made previously."
    It works better if you wrap to the outside always on one pole and to the inside always on the other pole, especially if you want your frapping to tighten all the wraps equally.

    Pretty sure your supposed to wrap the loose end of the clove hitch around the other side that’s used for lashing wraps, pull it tight, and your clove hitch wouldn’t move or get loose.

  • @pjanoo6973

    Could you make little notches in the wood and use paracord? I just love paracord and have tons of it and it would be nice If I could put some to use.

    • @fishingMDchannel

      I think its just because its a smooth dowel. Sticks are less uniform in diameter.

  • @NinjaHempKnight
    @NinjaHempKnight 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    A constrictor knot would work much better for holding the cord/rope onto the dowl/limb. Simply take the working end from the clove hitch and take it over the cord to the right, then under the same cord back to the middle and pull snug. This will NOT slip!

    • @adamm3492

    Why wouldn't you start with a constrictor knot? that wouldn't come loose like the clove hitch.

    • @lardvanopijnen
      @lardvanopijnen 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you tie it in the field and it rains you will not have a fun time getting them loose. And since square lashings are usually tied in large proportions it'll be even worse.

    • @marion4108
      @marion4108 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @cnghiem67

      I like the constrictor knot, but put a bight at the end to make it quick release. Can do that with most knots to make them quick release.

    Perhaps useful for a temporary shelter or something, but i wouldn't trust my life with those clove hitches on the ends as they could easily just continue slipping loose.

    How can you make the knot more steady? When I apply force on one side, it keeps bending about 20 to 30 degrees.

    • @akayami7643
      @akayami7643 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      C. Craft If you are actually trying to make something, stand on the pole after each wrap and pull up on the rope with as much force as you can muster. This will give you a solid, tight lash.
