  • Leaked Epiphone Tony Iommi SG is it too expensive? Another #Epiphone Signature #guitar was leaked this week and looking at the specs we might get disappointed. $1000 for low end pickups hidden by a cool signature attached?
Let me know what you think and for this money would you buy a #Gibson instead?

For that price it should have Gibson pickups. Same problem that the Epiphone Slash line of guitars.

I'd never pay that much for an Epiphone. How much of that price is for the "signature" part of it?

Most of it is, the SG special satin finish were$329 when they were started. You get a case with the iommi.

I just bought a new (blemished) Epiphone Slash Les Paul Victoria, Gold Top. The pickups are marketed as (Custom Probuckers) so naturally, people online believe they are the Standard Probuckers the Epi is putting in their other Les Pauls. But they're not. They are actually clones of the Gibson CustombBuckers. Bad marketing on Epiphone's part. But they are fantastic pickups, I actually favor them over my Gibson Burstbucker 2 &3. Perhaps, Epiphone has this same trick up their sleeve for P90 in the Iommi SG. Just a thought.....

I think your on point with the cost issue I think putting a premium price on a guitar based on an artists name doesn't always sell once you get over the enthusiasm of your guitar heroes model coming out most will start looking @ the specs then it's decision time I have a epi 59 and every time I play it I don't think I'd be happy without the gibson pickups in it for the price point the pickups make a difference and I bought mine last year before the price increase so I agree with you their heading in the wrong direction with this one

Who knows? Likely was going to have Gibson pup's, but due to shipping/import cost looked around the shop and put in what they had on hand.

These were just officially announced and you were spot on! Great move from Epiphone to release these BUT too expensive for what they are... Big fan of Tony, but having 1/3+ on top of the price, just for the name, is a bit too much... Although I was waiting for these to be released, I'll pass... 😔

Still waiting on a epiphone 1956 gold top in the premium lineup like what they did with the '59.

I had an Epiphone SG Modern from '19 that was outta the first batch to hit the states. Way more guitar in every way for literally half the price.

Making an Epiphone Iommi SG special was a no brainer, such a no brainer that I knew they will release one at some point. Unfortunately very disappointed with the price & specs

If your going to put cts pots in a epi I don't know why you wouldn't just keep going with better pickups I like the 64 specs but I wouldn't pay a premium for Tony's name I'd rather just buy a reg SG and put a sticker on it

I agree. That guitar should come with Gibson or Duncan pickups for that price. I picked up an Epiphone Jason Hook Explorer brand new for $600 USD a couple of years ago. They were listed for $899. Not sure why the retailer had them on sale (the paint scheme is not for everyone). It is equipped with US made Seymour Duncan pickups. You're right in that a used SG or SG Special/Tribute can be had in excellent condition for less than the price of that Iommi Epiphone. In fact, I bought a new Gibson 2020 SG Standard for $1050 USD in 2019, so if one is in the market for an SG, there are a lot of them of out there for a reasonable price.

While I do agree with you that the expensive Epi's should have Gibson electronics, maybe their line of thinking is, "well if we can sell a $1249cdn Les Paul Special Tribute with P-90s and we can sell a $3499cdn Les Paul Standard 50s with the same P90s, why not do it in the Epiphone line?"

My Alex Lifeson Signature was almost $1000 after tax and whatnot. No hardshell case is my ONLY complaint.
It's a masterpiece. Beautiful top, awesome pickups, GraphTech Ghost Double Locking, Floating Trem w/ piezoelectric pickup system. Stereo output, if you please.
    Soft-sided Epi case.🙄
Might as well be a gig bag. I got a Gator Reptile skin textured case with gorgeous, caressing pink plush interior with a a satin pink blanket to keep it snug and happy.
That's a Red SG. If that's your thing, excellent! Unfortunately it doesn't appeal to me for more than $499.

I had a little work done on the nut, threw some locking strap pins on and now I simply can't stop playing it. My 2002 LPS is getting jealous.

Used Gibson SG Standards are going for $900-1200 currently, why would anyone pay $1000 for an Epiphone with crap pickups, laurel fretboard, and asian "Mahogany"?

  • @adolfusknall3341
    @adolfusknall3341 ปีที่แล้ว

What are the alternatives? The normal Epiphone inspired by Gibson? A pretty good guitar for the money... but I cant live with these finishes (and they probably hide ugly, multi piece wood 'selection').
The standard Gibson SG Special? In the typical Gibson way they 'improved' the one thing nobody complained about: the position of the bridge pickup --> giving it a more trebly tone.

It absolutely is too expensive. $2000au plus for a $700 chinese guitar with a $150 case and a $1 sticker. I'll just buy a really nice US made guitar.

When they do this its just to bring up the price on lower priced guitars eventually.

Effing hell. I have paid less for my Gibson SG. Maybe because there were the last ones in Thomann's stock, maybe because that's the one with not-so-popular RoboTuners, but hey-ho it's still Gibson SG (... even metal case was included!)

    • @nellayema2455
      @nellayema2455 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I have a 2015 SG Special with the robo tuners, wide fingerboard and adjustable nut. It has that great gold case. It has a beautiful gloss finish and the '61 humbuckers. It looks, plays, and sounds great. I got it for $800 USD if I recall. People supposedly hate those 2015 models, but I really like mine!

  • @ReprobateMind

Doesn't make any sense at that price. I feel like they're trying to make the brand have a more comparable to Gibson line up when Epiphone fans don't want overpriced guitars they like great guitars at even better prices. I started on a £150 Epiphone, moved up to a LP Muse and then up to Gibsons. My Gibson SG standard is the only one that is more expensive than this Epiphone £1,000 from it's first owner almost mint condition and it's 1 of 400 limited in Bullion Gold. Everything else, My 2001 Gothic SG was like £730, I bet it blows this out the water just on feel alone, I got a 1980s True Firebrand SG with the Gibson Logo burnt in the headstock for £600 that has the same TTop pickups as the Customs did in the 80s best guitar I've ever played and that's just my SGs. Don't think that you can't afford a Gibson because people say they're too expensive you can get some good deals. Especially on the Tributes/ Specials and Melody Makers depending what you want. As much as I wanted to be the Epiphone guy who didn't care what it says on the headstock, the feel and the sound of the Gibson's even unplugged is something special and it makes me so inspired to just play and pick them up all the time and that's literally the only thing you need is to get attached to your instrument doesn't matter who made it, but I guess years of seeing your hero's play them cements the idea in your head. .
If you guys are looking into this guitar and have the money I'd advise you go one of two ways. Either keep your eyes on Facebook market place and local listing sites for used Gibson's at a good price and you'd probably get some change if you haggle. Or just look at the standard high-end Epiphones without a name attached. Get yourself a nice new Epi SG one for about 400-600 and treat yourself with someone else with the extra 400 you have. If you look on the classifieds for high-end Epiphones you often find them in very good condition cause people get them just to see what it's like I think. My Muse sold almost new cause I only played it a few times, first "expensive" (400) guitar and it didn't have a mark on it as I was too scared to play it. So consider that, If you buy a used Gibson with a ding and a couple scratches and the finish is satin you're going to feel way more comfortable just playing it and waring away your own story into it than you will with a sparkly new Epi.

Hate Epi's...but the tone of this piece is lovely. Sadly out of my reach on both - price/skill, so I'll pass this time. But P90 SG is a great combo, just need to find a more budget alternative. Thanks for your input.

Yes it is too expensive, and as you can probably tell i'm a big Sabbath fan, i bought a Joe Duplantier tele, the natural looking one, and turned it into a single humbucker one with a John Birch magnum instead of getting this.

The cost difference between the Special model and the Iommi model is nuts. On the surface of things it feels like Gibson is taking the p… !
As Iommi didn’t play many Gibsons in his heyday, maybe a Jaydee is a better option?

Your comment is OK enough for a $1000 says it all I've discovered that if I just settle on a guitar I'm always questioning my desicion and I'm usually not happy at this price point glad you get a case but you spend more time with your guitar than you do with your case

I really like the '59 Epiphones, very nice guitars and I would say worth paying what they cost but, to me, this SG is coming in at just too much for what you get. Haven't seen any UK price as yet.

I'd guess at £799 or £999 looking at the rest of the range the 6 string Matt Heafy les pauls are £999 so I'd imagine cause it's not a Les Paul it's cheaper to construct but Toni is a much bigger name especially with the older gens who have more money so they might just stick em at the same price.

Hi Dave I have just ordered the 1 in stock from Andertons. I agree that it's overpriced but as a lefty it's the only choice as the Gibson is way overpriced and the regular lefty p90 special is almost impossible to find.
