📚 Description: 1964 Gibson Tony Iommi Monkey SG Replica by Gibson Custom Shop
The Guitar that birthed Heavy Metal - fun fact, almost a 60s pre-CBS Strat Sunburst Strat that was painted white - but the pickups died during the first song so he switched to this back up.
Story goes got in 1967 Birmingham UK - Iommi is a left handed player, but had a righty SG - he traded for a lefty in a parking lot was used on the first 4-5 Black Sabbath Albums until its retirement around 1975 for various reasons
Not Stock (talk about stock SG Special) - customized for Mr. Tony. Working accident lost 2 finger tips. Last day of work in 1964 before going pro with band, thought about calling off but mom urged him to go. Electric welding, but the sheet metal press operator was gone so they had him do the job - guillotine press came down, pulled back ripped off middle and ring fingers. Sawed bone down - depressed - Jango Reidhardt. Leather fingertip.

Superflux pickup in neck 9vs6 pole pieces - wax potted to avoid squeal with shielding cavity. Later used John Birch built guitars after retired (epiphone crosses.) Sticker on headstock. Disconnected bridge pup tone for more output
Monkey Sticker - jacket he liked to put patches on since it was plain - decided to stick a monkey sticker on there and it just stuck
Retired it because it was just too valuable to take on the road. All the mods made it irreplaceable, no backup available. It was stolen at one point too for 6 months, but it turned up at a pawn shop and record label bought it back for him. Guy got rid of it because he just had so much bad luck while owing it. Cursed.

Very cool guitars, but I do feel Gibson should have shielded the cavities and spent more time on making the finish checking accurate. I get that it will never be 100% accurate to the original, but for $20K it should be on point. Also I would definitely look into getting the nut soldered back on that pick up (especially now that it has been documented) people will just use that as an excuse to try to get it discounted ( and on a guitar of that caliber f**k that). Anyhow thanks for sharing, this is the only way I would have been able to see the in depth demo (20K is way out of my budget).

@@pugzz6931 Yes, actually, he did. However, I'm not sure whether it was Iommi or Berry that did (or at least publicly claimed to have done) it first. Because, even though Chuck Berry made his musical debut MUCH earlier than Black Sabbath, it's always Iommi who is credited with inventing (or, at least, popularizing) the idea of light gauge guitar strings.
Jimmy Page also mentioned that he would substitute a banjo string for the high E and then string everything else with the E-A strings to make bends easier, this was back when he was a session player so it's possible a lot of players in Britain during the 60s were doing the same thing.

my friend has a guitar shop. he got in 12 new gibsons and 8 of them had real problems. 6 he sent back. from what i have seen and experienced personally gibson has build problems right now . is it that hard to build a good quality guitar? we are talking gibson for goodness sakes.
@@gregwilson2721 , long story short, we have nothing for shops where I live, so found a 2014 LP 1960 Custom Shop online at a GC, they described as collector owned and mint, but it arrived with buckle rash and dings. But - and this almost had to be from the factory - it had poorly finished fretboard edges and binding edges along the treble side. Like file marks. I returned it and found a 2018 used on Reverb that's about perfect, and recently bought a 2019 SG used that also has an excellent finish. But my experiences are very limited compared to what a shop would see. Still I hope they will get their act together.
As a part time guitar tech for 2 shops in my city, Gibson has shown the most inconsistencies in their quality both workmanship and electronically, and I’ve worked on hundreds upon hundreds of guitars in the past 20 years...
@@rockkstah2550 , yes it seems there are still problems at Gibson. I played a little in the 70's, quit, tried in the 80's quit, and got more serious from 2015 on. I've had several Gibsons, Martins and Fenders over the years, esp. more recently, and getting a good quality Gibson has been the toughest. The closest good guitar shops are two hours from me, so it's hard to try something out, and check out neck size, QC, playability, and people lie about condition, buying online, so it's been frustrating. But I have two nice Martins, a great Strat, an old LP Special, a nice LP 1960 Reissue, and recently a '64 SG Reissue. Peace.
Fun fact getting the board lacquered and using a zero fret was suggested to Tony by Brian May, who also has those features on his guitar.
The only way these guitars are worth 40 thousand dollars is if they come with a 36 thousand dollar car that they drive the guitars in, over to your house to deliver it, and leave you the car.

They're complete morons. The only Gibson I'd ever buy is a 77 RD but I don't think they ever made any lefty models. I'm not gonna drop $10000(probably more honestly) on a custom shop build either, which is hard to even do in the first place because you have to actually locate a store that takes custom orders, rather than do it online, because Gibson is stuck in the 50s for the sake of TraDiTiOn

You could, however, afford a BETTER guitar crafted by the folks at the Heritage custom shop. These are the guys who built Kalamazoo Gibsons, when the company was relevant. In 2015, I ordered a totally custom Prospect: Duncans with push/pull pots, 14" radius plain rosewoid board, 1 3/4" black tusq nut, Schaller roller bridge/trapeze tailpiece, Sperzel locking tuners, and highly fugured woods. The cost: $3400; the wait: 6-8 months. NO REGRETS. Fits my style and hands perfectly; nearly effortless playing experience.
Those "Special Symbols" on the back of the cross are British Silver Hallmarks. You can tell which city, what year and who made it. I'm guessing as it is Tony it would have been 'Assayed' in the Birmingham proof office. If so it will bear the 'Anchor' mark and 925 denoting 'Sterling Silver'

We are living in a golden age of guitars right now. There’s so many boutique makers surpassing “vintage“ guitars. Get yourself one of these new guitars and you’ll be happy 30 years from now when people are screaming for it.

You are thinking of it as something to play...that's not who Gibson is targeting here. These are collector pieces. The collecting market is very lucrative. As a player, would I buy one of these and gig it? Not a chance. If I were a rich Black Sabbath fan or autograph and memorabilia collector wanting to display it? Probably.

@@ferox965 I only half-agree. Serious collectors would buy the actual guitar played by the artist at historical concerts, or laying down studio tracks. The buyers of these SGs may BELIEVE that the value will appreciate, but true collectors KNOW that their vintage or custom instruments with provenance are valuable. A gifted high-school woodworker could probably build a better version of these things. Gibson is desperate to find a market sector. A few years back, they offered a Le Grande pressed-top jazz box (I believe that current iterations now feature a carved top) - at the same price point, Mark Campellone artisan crafts exceptional instruments of substance, and value.

So it doesn't really matter-it's a collector's piece. It will be displayed probably in a display case of some sort. I haven't checked Trogly's store but I bet these are gone. I have a stage played Les Paul from an underground legend. Would I gig it? Depends...but it sees LOTS of studio time.

Unfortunately I can assure you that the closest epiphone will ever get to this guitar probably is the 2020 SG special. Its just a too specific guitar with just too outlandish features for epiphone to reproduce.
That said, take a Epi SG special with P90 routing, throw in a set of John Birch for hundred bucks, get a wrap around with adjustable intonation for 40 bucks, and you are preeeeetty damn close.

I love the SG Special, I have a 1967 that my parents bought me when I was in high school, in excellent shape and plays great, fantastic guitar, not a Tony Iommi, but my own SG Special!!!
Wow... For $20K, and being sold as a "replica", I would think that everything should be exacting to the original. Marks, dents, sticker damage, etc.. I know it would be hard to do, and I surely wouldn't want to do it.. And of course, the shielding and the bridge. They should sell this as Tribute model or something. IIRC, back when Fender did the EVH replica, it was supposed to be pretty much accurate. Same year quarter, cig stains. The only real differences were that it didn't smell of years of smoke and sweat and I think I heard the frets were bigger or some small thing like that. Back to the point about the bridge on the Iommi being different. Supposedly for the EVH, they went thru heck sourcing the correct year quarters and the accurate reflectors and such to make it authentic. The EVH was $15k. I actually got to play one. Was pretty cool. Thanks for the vid on this !

Tony Iommi is one of my idols (I'm also a lefty with a missing fret-hand fingertip). I'd rather just mod an SG Special than drop $20k...but I certainly wouldn't having one of these as a display piece with my Sabbath collection!

I love Black Sabbath and Tony Iommi but unless I thought I could resell this custom shop guitar for more $$$ there is NO WAY I'd ever pay 20 grand. It's a beat up guitar with a missing tailpiece and a monkey sticker! And it's not even an exact replica! Of course the original one has nostalgic value for Iommi himself, but for anyone else is seems frivolous to me. He tailored his guitar to himself not anybody else. So get a tuba playing penguin sticker and put some Gretsch pickups in a black Gibson EB-6 and I'll get it!

@@melvynobrien6193 these are base prototypes. These were blues based rock players who in no world would be called metal players. Iommi crystallized it and gave it a face more than anyone else.

Back in the day, guitarists would take a set of strings, probably 10s, throw the low E out and string it up starting with hr A string as the E. Then they got banjo strings for the high E and sometimes B.
Lots of players did this, including Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and Terry Kath.
Ernie Ball came out with Slinky’s because of this trend.

I’ve been waiting for this. I bought a 1986 Gibson SG special YEARS ago because I was so into Tony in the late 80s.
Tony was moding out guitars way before Eddie Van Halen hit the scene. From the polyurethane 24 fretboard to high output custom john birch pickups.. the guy was doing things that even gibson said couldn't be done to a guitar. The guys injury was actually a blessing in a way because of him lowering the tuning on his guitar to make it easier on his fingers aloud him to invent a new genre of music. The hand of doom, he's created some of the most iconic riffs, ever.

OK, so hold on - a $20,000 Artist signature model that has been relic'd to supposedly look like the actual one played by the artist - but no two are the same? No shielding where he customized his with it? Things like that matter!
I don't see why they did it this way then, they only made 50, that's not that many and certain things are kind of essential, like that chipped away piece of wood by the insert, that is something that seems like it would really stick out.

For 20 000$ pretty sure most people would be willing to try and mimic every single ding perfectly. Honestly just pure laziness.
I hope at some point the bubble bursts, like the Dutch tulip craze, and people decide that these reliced signature models are just silly.
Having said that, I purchase the Epiphone version of the Peter Frampton Les Paul last year. Because I'm stupid, too. No relic.
@@JohnnyArtPavlou Nothing wrong with buying a signature series IF it's got the stuff you want. I have a Lee Malia Les Paul, a Tommy Thayer Les Paul , a Paul Stanley Black Ibanez Iceman and now I just added the Lzzy Hale White Explorer - all Epiphones accept for the Iceman, to my collection. I bought them because I wanted them, who they were from didn't mean anything. Well, the Tommy Thayer silver Spaceman was the first one I bought and I only bought it because they only made 1,000 of them and I figured one day some KISS fan would pay me a lot of money for it lol. Turns out that it's a great Les Paul, all Gibson electronics, long neck tenon, grover tuners and the thing just rocks the house so instead of keeping it locked away for that big sale someday, lol it's my number 1 lol. I did buy an Epiphone Johnny A but it had to go back due to blemishes and I am considering sending the Lzzy Hale Explorer back due to a few blemishes on it. The Explorer and Iceman I only bought because of their color, the Iceman is black and I wanted a black iceman and the only one was his signature model all the others were natural.

As much as I love that they made this model, the execution, especially the aging and choice of fretboard material, feels shoddy to say the least. I've also had the pleasure of examining and playing a perfect replica of Steve Vai's very own EVO guitar made by Ibanez in 2012, which a dealer tried to sell to me when I went to buy a J Custom RG. Let me tell you that in comparison to this, that felt like a passion project, despite being about a third of the price and being part of a series of 100 instruments. Not only that they did a fantastic job with the finish and reproducing the cracks and repairs on the original, but it felt like they really scanned it to get it right. It's probably not entirely perfect, but it's as close as one could get. I really wish Gibson put as much effort into their ludicrously expensive instruments. The fact that pickup fell out is absolutely ridiculous to say the least and they should be the ones reaching out to you to get that remedied.
Same with Fender, no one makes replicas quite as good as them. They seem to be able to copy things you just wouldnt think is possible.

Thanks for making this - where else could you see someone tearing apart a $20K guitar? I have to say I have always thought SGs were hideous, and these seem like a conspicuous waste of money, but to each his own, and the video is a winner!
I initially hated the way sg guitars looked, but now they're my favorite style. A part of me still wishes the horns were even, instead of one horn bigger than the other lmao

Honestly, this was probably the best tone in any of your videos so far. John Birch makes some awesome pickups, and you can buy them on Reverb. And they're quite affordable actually.

Tony was well known to use guitars that were custom made for him, to his specifications, by builders known as, "ghost," builders, contracted by the big name company, to build instruments that may not be their strong suit. This way the company retains the big name musician, the credibility of that name, and the musicians get the instruments they're looking for. This may be where the John Birch association began. Many well known signature artists use ghost built instruments, and that's guitars, basses, drums, but also brass instruments, classical instruments. There is also a similar situation in firearms used by elite operators, and a few well known hosts of outdoor sporting shows focused on hunting and shooting.
Tony's control cavity is always shielded, and I believe that the pickup cavities are as well.
One other quick note, Tony said recently that he went home at lunch on his last day, wasn't going to return for the afternoon, but his mother convinced him to finish the day. Ouch.
JD guitars the luthier iommi and angus young use aren't ghost builders the logos right on the headstock. Gibson signature models are marketing deals.
You can get JDs iommi old boy and JD customs (that iommi uses) and JD standards (angus youngs guitar spec)

For those people complaining about the price, These guitars are not made for the average player. These were made for people who are collectors and have serious cash. Hell some may not even play guitar but are huge fans. Someone is not going to buy one of these and play it on stage. Gibson knows the market these will cater to and those who do buy them, Will have no problem paying 20K for one. The average player like myself cannot justify the price.
Though i do agree that Gibson left out A LOT to consider this a true. 20k Replica.

I just heard that Clapton used 8s for the “Beano’” album in 1966. He used a banjo string for the high E, with the five thinnest strings from a 10 gauge set for the rest.

Those are CRAZY prices for Tony's CS guitars and clearly aimed at the American market. I'm a 'Brummie' born very near to Tony a few years later and a guitar-collector. Tony must be laughing himself to death that anyone would be stupid enough to pay $40k for this.
I owned a 60's SG that now sells for about $5k. It was never 'worth' that but that's what it sells for. There's plenty of good guitars around that are as good or better for under $1k. $20k guitars are what you get when old, rich farts want the guitars they pined for as teenagers.

depends how many hours went into that relic.1500 nah its a custom shop at the end of the day. go to the store and look at american relic strats ... they're all upwards of 5 grand.

You can absolutely buy those by John Birch himself from the UK via reverb. A set is 130 bucks. It's hell of a deal if you got Something to put them into.
