Yaesu recommends you format the card in the radio as I showed to prevent any issues with format.

Instructions pg 68 tell you to turn off the radio before ejecting the SD Card.

While I would never disagree with the manufacture I can say that if it is not reading or writing to the card it does not hurt anything to remove the cards with radio powered up. I have done it dozens and dozens of times without any issue. But by all means play it safe and follow the manual.
