Of all the companies, Yaesu is the master of creating the most convoluted, backwards, and risky, manuals, menus, and firmware upgrades. It’s quite impressive and they never fail to amaze 😅.
as someone who works for a Japanese company, this is not uncommon. Their products are usually designed with the intent that "experts" are working on them. They do not usually try to make things simple for the common person. Much easier to design products this way as it is much more challenging to create products that are really intuitive and easy to use.
Performed the upgrade today, and verified that this set of instructions works perfectly. Thanks for the clear video... and walking through the mess that is Yaesu's update process!
Change log: FT5DR/FT5DE MAIN Ver 1.13 / SUB Ver 1.02 (2024/08) • Changed the display frequency (up to 100kHz) during VFO/PMS scan. • Other functions have been improved and optimized. Would love to understand their "other" category"! Any guesses what they improved?

I had been following along with the video and didn't see the memory scan until after I'd done the update. Thanks for the video Josh! It was very informative.
KI6NAZ, I am a little east of you down here in Houston TX. I have been researching the difference between an FT-70 DR, vs. an FT-5 DR. Thanks for making this update a lot less stressful! The 500 was just a matter of loading to the SD card. Great video. I bricked a FTM-100 a few years ago updating my fault
Bricked the radio, unbelievable !!!!! guess i have to send it in. (update) got both radihrough with no problemsent os done. Just had a bad cable. Update went through with 0 problems.
Good news indeed. Now I want one. I can't get lithium ion packs for my ft-60 sent to me out here. I might as well just upgrade to another radio. I might have to bite the bullet and get a triband for work and listening to ATC. Thanks for the knowledge, Josh. We need an emoji of a guy scratching his neck like a crackhead while looking at new radios...🤣🤙🏾
@w9fcc big island Hawaii. It's a restriction some companies made for transporting lithium batteries. The messed up part is if I order a radio, IT COMES WITH A LITHIUM BATTERY. 😮💨🤙🏾
Just to add some data, I don't have the original mini-usb cable that came with the radio with me (I'm working from the office today) and I was able to update with no problems using a regular mini-usb cable (I did have to use a knife to trim back some of the overmolded plastic on my mini-usb cable to get it to fit in the recessed jack however).
I've tried on two different Windows 11 t machines USB recognized perfectly but when I try to upload the firmware application says no power or cable is unplugged hook it up to my old windows 10 machine and it worked perfectly first time this is very strange
I have enabled the .NET Framework, installed the driver, and installed the VCRedist, but after connecting the radio to my PC, it says that the device is not recognized. Its Windows 10. The core isolation function is disabled.
nice video. i tried it and the little switch broke and fell into the radio. sent it back to yaesu. they claim the board is broken, and is not covered by warranty, have a nice day with my 500 dollar brick. too make things worse, gigparts agrees. even though i purchased an extended warranty. still arguing the point. but if i can brick it with a toothpick, it's not worth buying, is it?
Couldn't load the driver in Windows 11! I get the error message "radio was not connected"? Its a brand new Samsung Ultra 4 Laptop with the latest version of Windows.
Does anyone know if there is an issue using a Windows 11 computer? I've heard other radios have issues with Window 11 not recognizing the cable or something to that effect.
Hey Josh, I just passed my technician exam using HRCC. I have a yaesu FT-5DR. I'm wanting to do software update. Can download updates to micro SD card and then install updates to radio? By the way, your exam teaching video really helped me pass the exam.
I just got my FT5D a few days ago, I put my callsign in and everything, then I tried to make a contact with a buddy on both 154.750 and 462.750 MHz and on some GMRS/FRS channels but every time I press the PTT button the radio beeps and says "TX Inhibit"on the screen an it does not transmit. I've looked online and I haven't found anything on this issue, or anything in the manual. I was hoping someone would have insight on this but I no reviews talk about it, it seems to work straight out of the box for most reviewers.
What is the DSP part on the firmware? Btw, the scanning is supposed to show all digits. Looks like these workers are not paid enough! giving us half solutions. 😂😂😂
Before this radio, I was having the Icom radio, I thought - let's give it a try, for sure will be better than Quasheng. After having this more than 1 year, I know that it was my biggest mistake. The quality of battery attachment, lack of USB C charging, EMC issues (this is why they do not update the TFT frequently), lack of any SW for settings on MAC, so much confusing menu, etc - led me to buy 3 more Quashengs since that time and each of them costed 10% of brand new Yeasu. I promissed to myself to stay away from Yaesu twisted ways.
In all my years of upgrading things, this has got to be the stupidest thing I've ever seen. Its 2024. What is it with these companies and their inability to just click a button and update it? Just make it so you can put the firmware on an SD card and click an update button and be done with it.
Seems like a useless update for just the scan to display on VFO. What’s the point? If you don’t have the tones, it’s not like if it stops on a new repeater you’ll be able to talk. I just wish Yaesu would do something sensible like use the built in GPS to do a location based scan of memories that have coordinates saved in them. Just have it add a column for coordinates. Radio reference has cords for each repeater anyway. As it stands, i have no idea why icom is the only company to do this. It’s stupid to have to load my entire state’s worth of repeaters when i travel to have to link banks and scan just to discover new stuff in the area I’m in, and God forbid I happen to pick up a shared frequency in another state with a different tone
For those with Windows 11 that have successfully installed the Generic Boot USB Direct driver, but it comes up flagged as NOT being able to load in Device Manager: 1. Proceed with update as normal.
Had the same problem with the driver being incompatible on a Win 11 machine. However following these instructions I was able to update the firmware. Problem now though is how to remove the driver so I can tun the Memory Integrity function back on. It’s not obvious following the prompts on the PC, any further guidance ?

No idea. What is your discord name? If the link doesn’t work that might be your discord logon.
I am guessing that on this radio the process “print to screen” slows down the scanning significantly.
Downloaded the update this past Sunday but haven't had a. Hance to install it yet.
Would the screen to shut off completely in the background

I have the same problem with Windows 11 security setting not letting me load the driver. Did you find a solution?
Curious, had you reloaded the memory channels back into the radio after the flash/reset?
They were new memories.
I almost tossed that USB-mini cable. So glad I didn't WHEW.
Thanks for this, Josh, especially the "All Reset" different procedure... I am fully updated now.

So, currently won't be updating the software. Bummer
I can't install the driver, it just doesn't read it, I already uninstalled and installed everything as is the pdf :(
so, we just load back the "code plug" after we reset to get our settings and memory back?
That's what I'm thinking. If you haven't saved it first, DO SO!
Correct. Some firmware won’t require a Reset All. This one does.

This is a ham radio, not a GMRS radio. You have to have the Mars cap mod done in order to transmit on GMRS frequencies.
For anyone planning on replying to this: I did the mod myself, and I can now transmit on MURS and GMRS/FRS freqs
Die haben doch nicht mehr alle Ritter auf der Burg, bei Yaesu 🏰 😵💫
Can I import a backup off SD card or am I forced to recreate the config & channels?
You should be able to import.
LEAVE IT TO YAESU TO MAKE SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE A SIMPLE TASK ULTIMATELY A DIFFICULT TASK!!
Simplicity is obviously not their strong suit
Someone at Yaesu still goofed! LOL!
Does anyone know if there's a Linux update process?
