Good to see a TH-cam page with a ham host that talks about equipment reviews from a CW perspective. So sad so few know how to review a rig and totally leave out a mode. Well done OM!

Thanks! CW is gaining more and more fans, new ones! I personaly know few hams who just started learning the code , just because "it's cool!" This mode is indestructible! 73! Linas LY2H

A nuisance with but 1-port on the 710 solved. In 10' problem solved.
What startled me a bit was when you mentioned using the mouse on the standard port, I before starting to view your video thinking I needed to hook up a 2nd USB cable. Not so !
    Thank you.

Unfortunately Yaesu made not a pin diode qsk switchover. The relay klickklack is annoying, makes me crazy. I like real silcence CW TRXe, like the KX or QCX etc. Nice Video. TNX es 73!

Thanks! I fully agree, full QSK is actually impossible in this radio, unlike in my K3, but I can work semi Bk-in, even in the contest, with less clacking . Not very "proffessional" contesting, but the beautiful receiver compensates, IMHO, for this unjustifiable flaw in the design of this otherwise very nice, and affordable, radio :) 73! Linas LY2H

Great video linas, I have tried many many times over the years to connect my ts 480hx to my computer, but it never worked, and even the computer shut down and I had to send it away to get fixed hi.
Now I just turn the dial and connect my paddle and I never use the computer unless it's nessasary hi hi.
But great if people can set these things up. 73.

@@RAMAKRISHNARAOKAKIVizag Congratulations! Yes, this radio works fine on digital, I do FT8 almost every day, actually :) I reduce power, normally, to some 50-70W, depending on band conditions, just on the safe side... Good luck! 73! Linas LY2H

Linas, do you think there is any advantage to using the WinKeyer USB over the PC CW keying? I use WinKeyer USB with N1MM for contesting, but it doesn't seem that there is an advantage to it based on your success in this video. K1EL mentions that Microsoft Windows can sometimes affect the quality and timing of CW keying from the PC. Have you run into that issue?
Also, would you consider making a video where you set up N1MM for RTTY using WinKeyer USB? I was heavily using RTTY mode many years ago with an old VIC 20 computer and a HamTronics terminal program. I would like to get back into RTTY using N1MM and the WinKeyer USB, but I have not been able to figure it out, and there doesn't seem to be much information out there on how to do it. Just curious. Thank you for your excellent videos! -Jim WB0RLJ

Hello Jim, thanks for a very good question! Shortly speaking, I found no advantage whatsoever to using the Winkeyer over the CW generated by the N1MM. During some 20 years or so of me using the N1MM logger in all its incarnations, I have never ever had this problem of computer being slow etc. as it is shown in this video on the K1EL website :) ( I would say, this problem reminds me the RF -in-the-shack problem then the problem with the N1MM software :)). And I've been running it on great variety of laptops and desktops during this time, from WinXP to Win11, some of them only running just 1GB of RAM :). Well, I never used, nor use, the N1MM for multitasking, like controling rotators etc, may be because of that it runs flawless, as I only run CW macros and logging contest contacts on it. The max CW speed I use im the contest could be some 30wpm and this is fully OK for the logger to handle. So, may be it's just me so lucky, otherwise, why would the Winkeyer got embeded in so many apps, including the N1MM ? Who knows, I think, it's a personal case in each case. Actually, the Winkeyer has got more to offer than just a keyer, like extra PTT ports and even a stand-alone RTTY signal generator. Actually, for me, this relatively new feature of generating RTTY from the paddle was the major reason to buy the latest version of it, as I wanted to get my IC-705 running on RTTY without the need of computer ( and I succeded, there is a video on it elswhere on this channel).
As it comes to using the Winkeyer for RTTY in the N1MM logger, well, I have yet to see the point in doing this :). As it is now, I have my FT-710 configured for the AFSK , based on the logger-embeded MMVARI multimode software, which allows to run absolutely all "old" digital modes ( except of FT8), including the AFSK RTTY. For this limited activity on RTTY nowadays, it serves me very nice. Getting the "real" FSK RTTY running would take too much of a hassle, wiring etc. But it could be worthwhile, though if using the older, pre-USB radios, where all this wiring and external sound cards would be needed anyway, the Winkeyer might still be a very good solution. It's just my thoughts, which could be wrong, YMMV! 73! Linas LY2H

Hello,@@Linas_LY2H . I did a test today with my FT-710 directly connected to my Surface Pro 8 for PC keying. The results were good for the most part, however I did notice that when sending code from the PC, if I went to scroll my QSO log listing while the PC was sending, it would actually hang or pause the sending for a second or two. The sending would pause until I stopped scrolling through my list of QSOs. That's about the only action that I made that would cause a pause in sending. Now, I use N3FJP ACLog for POTA activations, so that may be a difference between N1MM and N3FJP in the way it uses the PC resources. The only other thing I noticed was that direct PC-to-rig keying had different timing for character and word spacing than what the WinKey USB has - a bit longer delay. Again, that would likely be coming from N3FJP ACLog, and probably could be tweaked. All in all a successful test.

@@WB0RLJ Good testing and interesting results! I, actually, never do anything else on my computer when sending something on the air, like a contest report or a CQ , somehow naturally :), there is no time for anything else if in the contest with high rates of qso's. Anyway, thanks for your input, let's keep on experimenting! 73! Linas LY2H
