    In this video I’m mostly covering the question from the “mainline UC” perspective, but I also added some notes to cover the “The Origin UC”
    Here are a few differences to keep in mind:
    In The Origin, the Black Tristars already have their HMT Zakus during Loum, in mainline UC they don’t get their HMT Zakus until much later. They used C-types during Loum, got S-types as a reward for capturing Revil and then at some later time upgraded to their HMT Zakus. Aditionally, in mainline UC, the HMT Zaku is a development from the F-type, which was introduced after Loum.
    In The Origin, Char’s mission immediately after Loum is explicitly to look for the Federation’s V-project whereas in mainline UC this is never confirmed (afaik) and he just stumbles upon it during a routine mission. While this doesn’t exclude that the same thing as in The Origin happened, it also opens the door for more speculation (as I did in the video)

      @Neo_Zian8904 the Zaku 2 Hi Mo R1 and R2 are for space only due to the new parts fited for space and while there was also a Zaku 2 ground type Hi Mo, but for GBO2 they probably made them playable for the game

      There is one question that you can clarify ever since the “Jim or GM” video:
      Is a Hizack supposed to be called “Hi-Zaku”?
      The Chinese name for “Hizack” is “高萨古” with “高” meaning “tall/high”. I thought that this was a mistranslation. but the more I think about it, the more I lean towards calling it “Hi-Zaku”.
      The Hizack just have a new backpack and an “upgraded” generator, but the generator is sub-par, as the Hizack can only carry one beam weapon.
      So which one is correct:
      Hizack? Or Hi-Zaku?

      This is actually a kind of war myth that had some interesting parallels;
      In WWII officers were allowed to replace their regular service rifle with a submachine gun, but most newly-minted NCOs, such as sergeants, would prefer their rifles, usually.
      Why? Because snipers would pick off the guy who looks like an officer first. If SMGs were handed to officers it would be easier to see than insignia.

  • @Mythicalmage
    @Mythicalmage 4 ปีที่แล้ว +271

    Here's a fifth possibility: The standard Zaku 2 was the bread and butter of the Zeon military, and someone high up in Zeon probably wanted to show that their ace used the same machine as the common soldier. It probably made great propoganda, encouraging soldiers to be more like Char, etc. Char might also have valued this connection to the Zeon soldiers, not wanting to seem aloof/distant like the Zabis and some of the aces.

    I've always thought that when they rolled out High Mobility Type 2, Char was already fired by Dozle for failing to protect Garma and Kycilia haven't hired him yet. By the time he could've gotten it, they're already testing Gelgoog, and he was one of the first recipient of that.

    • @Devillin
      @Devillin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I was thinking the same thing, but the Black Tri-Stars had their High Mobilities in July of 0079, and used them until October, when Kycilia transferred them to Earth, following Garma's death, and gave them Doms. I think we can chock this one up to a combination of Zabi in-fighting (Kycilia took them all to the point that even Dozle couldn't get one as a personal MS) and Char already had his personal Zaku souped up to the same performance. If it is any consolation, it appears that Char stole one of the Black Tri-Star's High Mobility Zakus after the war and used it during 0083.

The zaku II Is a very iconic Zeon mobile suit. There's a lot of powerful symbolism 2 regular enlisted men When Char aznable uses the same Mobile Suit they use. If it's good enough for him, then it's good enough for me.

    @afallencheetah6610 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey, I know I'm three years late but I wanted to say this about vehicle availability rates in the military, I was in the USAF as a aircraft mechanic. Vehicle Rates are more based on the experience and availability of trained mechanics more then the actual reliability of the machine if its a well built machine. The main reason something like the original Gundam was able to preform at 100% reliability was solely down to having a very experienced mechanics to repair it (RIP Medoz). Its very likely that for Zeon having pilot shortages to the point that teenagers are flying their most advanced machines, the same could be said of the mechanic crews as well suffering from lack of trained mechanics and shortage of spare parts. Doesn't matter how good and reliable the mobile suit is when it comes back with heavily damaged limbs from blocking shots or worn put parts from pilots pushing the machine to far. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised that because Char was rather infamous for his high speed, he probably triggered a bunch of safety features in his mobile suit that required the techs to perform very time consuming inspections to make sure nothing has broken that could later on kill him accidentally. Maybe at first it was easy to do because crews were well staffed and had plenty of time to complete the inspections but as the war dragged on and more ships were destroyed, new ships required new crews and the fastest way to speed up training is to pull those really experienced techs out and either send them to the schools to teach or send them to the new ships as higher ranking members to lead the now really inexperienced crews while being replaced in their old units by new less trained or maybe not even being replaced at all. Let's say a typical Zeon mechanic unit has 60 techs for ten machines, by the end of the way this could have been cut down to just 30 or even less now putting a heavy workload on a much smaller crew. This will lead to mistakes and short cuts/pencil wiping to speed up maintenance which in turn will kill many pilots and just make the situation even worse for everyone. Anyway, sorry for rambling.

    Some things I thought of:
    1. Char could’ve found it patronising being given a better mobile suit, as if it was saying his performance wasn’t already good enough so he tried to prove them wrong.

    Think the reason he didnt got one was simply because he was on special asignment to go after the gundam project pretty much in covert ops. The supply lines didnt allow them to ship a high mobility type to them. Sure they got resuplied after their first battle with the white base but they had to do with what was available since the invasion of earth was well underway at that point allready and zeon was strapped for resources, not to mention they where in pursuit of the white base and couldnt wait. Considering that there is no faster then light travel in the UC, Char had been out in space for months by that point. So if the High mobility type wasnt available at the point of his departure from zeon controlled space it makes sense that he didnt got one.
    The other aces where all stationed at important military bases, part of the invasion army or part of large fleets. None of them where operating behind enemy lines when they got their high mobility types.
    So yeah.. makes perfect sense that he was the only one who didnt got one.

    I LOVE the "answer a question a week" idea ^_^ My question:
    What happened to Mineva Zabi after the One Year War, and when was she replaced with the double we see in ZZ? I know some theories point to Char helping her escape to protect her (or stick it to Haman). Or the EFF acquired (captured?) her as a bargaining chip (this is hinted at in Unicorn). But also some think the Mineva we see in Unicorn is actually just a clone or another double, mirroring Full Frontal's philosophy of "If the people need me to be the Red Comet, then the Red Comet I shall be."

    I was always under the impression that the Zaku Commander type was the overall best all-pupose unit at that time. While a HMT will outperform it in space, it might fall behind inside a colony or on a planet. It is also quite difficult to say how big the performance gap between the two really is because just because it uses Gelgoog tech, it's still not he real thing. On top of that Char has spent quite some time into mastering his Zaku. He knew the machine in and out and could push it to its limits effectively. Since the HMT was kind of a poor man's Gelgoog he wouold have had to learn everything again.

  • @gldni17
    @gldni17 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Best answer I can think of is that he simply wasn't able to get one. He was constantly away from Side 3 or the primary space bases of Zeon during the time of the HighMo development cycle, and the primary HighMo units were space exclusive machines. Char was on Earth from the time he chased the White Base down to the time he invaded Jaburo. Upon getting back to space, he was given a new prototype Gelgoog, one of the earliest production models, and likely never got a HighMo version while he was operating with the Newtype Corp (perhaps because of Kycilia's hubris regarding the Newtype Corp). By the time he got back to base, all the machines were out and he got the Zeong, and the war ended.

  • @weirdchick257

    This was something I thought about before, I always figured it was because the performance was close two his own custom Zaku II with it's over tuned specs. Although Char did show later he could handle even bigger performimg mobile suits, so it made me wonder why he just didn't use a over tuned HM model. Thanks for your answer Kakarot.👍

    I really like the idea of the in-house politics of the Zabi family having something to do with it, the way you layer it out seems very plausible.
    The idea of Char wanting the accessibility of parts for repairs/modifications that was offered for the basic/earlier Zaku types makes a lot of sense too and seems in-line with the way Char would think.

    Though i happily agree to all 4 reasons being plausable, there's something about the 4th one that makes me feel like clinging on to due to how real world militaries do this with the use and maintainance of their vehicles and weapons.
    Why jump the shark with a totally new or more expensive upgrade to an exhisting model of vehicle/weapon if it's doing just fine? (At least that's what i got from watching all the mobile suit development videos you made, which in retrospect got me into the world of Kidou Senshi Gundam)

    Real world soldiers when given the option often use outdated equipment long after the replacement has been issued either out of sentimentality/stubbornness to admit that the new stuff will work better for them, or just because in live combat it's better to stick to what you know instead of using flashy new stuff and have it break/not work in the way you expect it to

    Interestingly, my MSIA Char's Zaku II action figure, second version, came with an optional minelayer backpack that could replace the standard backpack on his MS-06S. The minelayer backpack, in addition to holding mines, had 50% greater propellant capacity and additional maneuvering jets, and led to the development of the High Mobility Type's backpack that included the additional jets and propellant but deleted the mines. To my knowledge, Char never used the minelayer backpack on his Zaku. It also came with an MMP-80 90mm machine gun (in addition to the bazooka and 120mm machine gun), which again Char never used and had quit using his Zaku II by the time the MMP-80 came out, so the inclusion of these is confusing.

    In my theory is that the High mobility type was so limited is that not all aces was able to get one and when Char caught wind of this new zaku variant it was already too late as production was (presumably) halted for the new gelgoog already entered production so he chooses the gelgoog over the High mobility type instead

  • @r00k_mk2

    Great job like always. My thoughts on it are the Char was using the Zgok as he was on earth. In the movies they didn't show much till he tested the Gelgoog on Texas colony. So could it just be that he knew of the development of it and was testing it as the high mobility zaku 2's were being released? I couldn't find any devolment data on the zaku as of a release date during the war.

  • @TheWarriorsFromHell
    @TheWarriorsFromHell 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Reason #4 by the time the High mobility types where being passed out, Char was using a Z'Gok on the attack on Jaburro Base, and when he returned to space got an MS-14, which the HMT-R2's were put out to fill the delayed production gap of the MS-14.
    Reason #5 though doesn't apply with the Zaku HMT, certain variations were designed and produced at certain locations / sub factions.
    Like AXIS was responsible for the MS-06F2, MS-09R and R2, MS-14Jg (like as to why Cima had a marine com, and not a jager) the MS-17's and the entire MS-18 series both type E and Type F (which used the rifle of the ms-14Jg). Generally look at the design difference and you'll see a trend on whether it was an Axis Variant or a Zeon Variant during the war.

    I always did find it odd in origins that the Black Tri-Stars had high mobility types so I try to ignore that since I thought they didn’t come into production until later on in the war. I think it’s also possible that Char never got a high mobility type because he got the gelgoog early production type instead, or because after “failing to protect Garama.” He never got one because the Zabi’s refused to give him one. However he was relieved of duty if I recall correctly shortly after “failing to protect Garma.” So he just wasn’t in the military to get one and when Kycilia reintegrated him into the military he got the gelgoog.

  • @mondobizarrro5468
    @mondobizarrro5468 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Personally id see it as one of three reasons
    1 werent they being produced during the jaburo attack? If so that would mean he was most likely still assigned to black angler and as a result used the Z'gok amphibious ms
    2 if he was in space, for the most part was in side six, so again if they were out, federation was moving in on side six as some colonies secretly aided EFSF
    3 by the time he got an upgrade, he got a prototype gelgoog (which was a slight improvement to Zaku ii high mobility since beam weaponry, which he made great use of)

  • @shindoushuichi0287
    @shindoushuichi0287 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just always assumed it was just the timing. He kept his custom all the way till the attack on Jaburo where he of course swapped out for the Z'gok, and then went back to space to get the Gelgoog and then the Zeong from there. he didn't really have time or the need to go back to the Zaku II High Mobility type.

    A possible 5th reason is the Gelgoog and the Zaku II R-2 were developed around the same time and since the Gelgoog could be used in both space and on earth with realistically no modifications needed that would most likely appeal to Char more just as his Zaku II S type would perform under the same conditions.

  • @jacktueton7445
    @jacktueton7445 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    To me it was just a simple retcon as some of chars Zaku 2 kits have extra thrusters on them indicating a customised suit which probably matched the performance of the HMT kinda like a well tuned street car compared to a normal race car.

  • @neonnwave1
    @neonnwave1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My reasoning is that Char at the time was already considered an ace and had leadership skills, so it made sense for him to have a commander unit that is said to have improved communication hardware (in order to give orders to others more effectively), while the HMT didn't have that. He did however have the limiters removed from the commander type he piloted (at his request), which allowed it to perform greatly. When he got back into space, there was no need for a HMT because the Gelgoog was made by the time he was going to go out into combat (as well as act as a test pilot).

    I know I'm really late to this but it could have been a morale thing like it inspires his troops more when he's fighting in a machine that's pretty much just like theirs with a few modifications, and so they feel like if he can do so good in that suit maybe we can too, and if he was to use the high mobility type it would have undermined that morale because they'd be like well there's got to be a reason why he switched to that, maybe there's a problem with these things

  • @barrybend7189

  • @kevinkearney902
    @kevinkearney902 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think its a combination of things. First of all his unit in particular was customized beyond a standard commander type. We see this in figures, games and some models. Beefier reactor, bigger thrusters, added leg thrusters (even adding more on the rg) etc. Although he was a damn good pilot in a zaku 1 (in origins) he didn't seem to have the full recognition or respect of aces like black tri stars. They seemed to think he was cocky if I remember.
    We already see his suits from 1 to 2 get overhauled multiple times, which in itself shows he had some sort of prefrence from command yet it wasn't until he crushed multiple federation ships on his own and being coined the red comet that they seemed to see his level. Black tri stars were in the prototypes at this point and he was showing them up.
    Either they kept fine tuning his suit and used it because anyone seeing a commander zaku of that color and speed coming knew who it was on both sides. One can assume that he would have gotten one if his mission hadn't taken him to Earth.
    Remember he got his own zgok to invade Jaburo, and the ground high mobility type was for Earth forces only as they weren't planning to have to take them back into space.
    Once they are back in space however char is given a gelgoog, assigned specific duties such as aiding Lalah. Beam weapons or similar specs but no beam weapons? At this point the other aces were either getting their gelgoogs or in one of the last iterations of the hmt.
    By the last battle Char was given the Zeong because he was a newtype, but if that wasn't the case he'd probably have had a high mobility gelgoog or other top variant.
    I wouldn't even be shocked if his was given away 🤣

  • @666styxxx666
    @666styxxx666 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another reason could be that the high mobility type WAS based on char's hightened performance on his zaku 2 (if memory serves his zaku has 3 times the performance due to his insistence of greater tuneing - origin starts with char outclassing everyone else and still wanted more dispite the mechanics warning about g force with char saying he could handle it, even in the original series char's zaku had better performance than regular models of the same class so therefore the improvements went into the next class " high mobility" again based on char's insistence of greater and greater performance so much the high mobility was equal to and slightly better performance wise thanks to char , and every one knows that after the oyw most pilots wanted the same class as his . plus for every suit char used the performance was greater than the regular issue owing to his insistence on greater tuneing and more power so he sets the standard and others follow

  • @brianjohnson5272
    @brianjohnson5272 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ty kakarot197, I like this style. On the zaku 2 HM and char I see three reasons rarity, politics, and chars skill set.
    Firstly rarity as you said parts weren't common and Chars knew that so he most likely took a pass.
    Second politics, Gehrin and kecilia were vieing for absolute dominance over the other, Char didn't want to be beholden to one or the other while Dozle was a good man at heart he was not the brightest bulb nor had the will to step on his family ambition. While Char might have gotten one if a request was made Gehrin and Kecilia would have noticed and cast their eye on him.
    Third his skill set, Char knew he could take a ms 06S to its upper limit without injuring or killing himself by removing the limiters on the suit. With the high mobility he most likely couldn't disengage the limiters with killing himself using it! So while the high mobility had better stats his body couldn't handle it and with the limiters off the performance was inferior to an ms 06S.

    Reasons I could think of are "Timing, Availability &, Point in time performance". For timing & Availability: When was the Zaku II High Mobility Type even available for aces? I mean, was it made available long before or not until after he was on Earth chasing The White Base? As for how "Point in time Performance" has anything to do with this: Which is better, the Zaku II High Mobility Type or the Gelgoog? Cause I'm left with the impression that, no matter what type of Zaku II you compare the Gelgoog to, the Gelgoog is just all around better. Better armor, better speed, can use beam weapons, etc. Soooo, if there really weren't any Zaku II High Mobility Types available for Char until he went back into space chasing after The White Base but, the Gelgoog was already available by that time, it could be begged to ask: Why bother with a Zaku II High Mobility Type when, the Gelgoog is already available?

    It's like upgrading a car to have 500 bhp and the someone telling you that you need to go to a new car and have to go through that whole process again to get the same or higher performance. Char simply upgraded the suit to his desires and didn't need anything else. Him getting a High-Mobility Type would have costed the Zeon Army quite a bit given the upgrades he did to it not to mention the time it would take to apply those upgrades, and, with Zeon fighting an uphill battle, time and money was of the essence for the Zeon army and their aces.

    My theory is that the war only lasted a year and was really spread out over several theaters. Per fluff what kicked off the development of the High Mobility Types was the Zakus' subpar performance against the GM's. Meaning it all happened after Jaburo when the GM's debuted. Around the same time his colleagues were playing with the HM Types Char was doing other things, like chasing after the Gundam. I suppose one could have been assigned to him, but he has no appearances during the time he could have been using it(about 3 wks) and it would have been moot when he got his Gelgoog.

  • @HeirOfSparda

  • @SerenadeURA
    @SerenadeURA 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't recall if in the original 0079 it was ever expanded upon that all MS-06S models were three times faster than a normal Zaku II but if you want to consider The Origin the canon (it does seem better thought out) of the White Base in the One Year War, Char personally oversaw his Zaku II's customization, removing the limiters on its thrusters.
    Even if you would prefer to ignore The Origin, the MS-06S Zaku II was a limited production for unit commanders and other high ranking officials, and *did* outperform the standard Zaku II. There's a lot to be said for having a custom designed weapon that suits (pun unintended) your needs.
    Also, Char's mission at the beginning of the original anime was to obtain intel on the new federation weapon. He was sent out in command of a relatively small team and with limited supplies - he had to request backup suits on short notice much to Dozle's surprise. It's unlikely Dozle's fleet had much on hand more than Zaku IIs. Not long after this, he got Garma killed and was suspended from duty for incompetence. When he enters combat again, he wouldn't have been issued a Zaku II High Mobility Type because he was in charge of amphibious forces in Zeon's navy - hence why he was given a Z'gok. By the time he made it back to space combat, given Zeon's (ill advised) rapid rollout of experimental mobile suits, they had already outperformed the Zaku II HMT with the Gelgoog.
    I think the easiest answer is he was just never in the right place at the right time .
