I'm keeping a list of the ones I forgot and I'll include them in next week's QotW!
One thing I've seen pop up a few times is how in IBO most folks piloting the MS are civilians, but many of them belong to either private security groups or straight up pirate groups or the "mafia". So it's kinda like Gundam X or mercs, technically it can be correct, but it's not something for the average civilian. The Spinner Rodis I totally forgot about though.

This is from ibo gekko the astaroth was owned by a civilian family as a hariloom, and the owner of CGS had the barbatos under his name , not listed under a asset to his company it was just stored there.( It was hinted at by Yukinojo as well that Galerhorn did not know that a mobile suit was there, Galerhorn would have a database of private military to know the CGS assets going in to try capturing Kudelia.)

Technically not civilian but there was Reccoa's stripped down Gelgoog that she used to infiltrate Paptimus's ship with the cover story that she was testing it out after a rebuild. Considering that things like Space Pirates exist in some Gundam Timelines, a more Age of Sail kind of weapon usage, at least in space, could be in effect. Private Corporations, like Freight Haulers and Trading Companies, could be allowed to operate armed ships as well as Mobile Suits to defend themselves, just like Merchantmen back in the day were armed with Cannons and their crews with Muskets. Or to use Star Wars as an example: The Laser Turrets on the Millenium Falcon, whose stock version comes with these.
Of course, that doesn't apply to Private Citizens, but it is something I could see happen for Companies.

    • @DeathToJihad

Man, I'd love for Sunrise to expand on the concept of mobile suits being equivalent to irl vehicles of war. Like having an irl sense of development and 'livespan' for mobile suits. ie an ms can be used in service for over 40 years, given to other militaries when they're replaced with newer ms like how irl the us sold older f-15s,f-16s etc to other militaries worldwide

A lot of the F15 and F16 sold around the world were and are brand new jets sold by the manufacturer. Used aircrafts require more maintenance and in the long run are more expensive than new ones. The real touch of realism that i would like is to have the ms painted in the appropriate camouflage pattern for their operational scenario, woodland/desert for ground units and black/digital black for space. If you think about it Char's red mobil suits were a big middle finger to the enemy

I mean, replace the Weapons with Firedepartment Equipment like big Water hoses or rescue equipment, and they could work pretty good for example on Airports, or ground related Spaceports.
Also, there was alot of MS in the UC Timeline, that was refitted for the Engineering Corp to recover downed MS from the Battlefield.
They could be used as Working Mashines for rebuilding Civilisation too.
Also in Seed Astray and Seed Destiny Astray, there is the Junk Guild.
Some of the Ships and MS they have, aren't weaponised but have long arms and clamps to actualy recover stuff from space... and sometimes throw the stuff at enemys as last defense. xD

In a similar vein to the matter in X, in Zeta Reccoa pretended to be a civilian with her salvaged gelgoog. So in UC it's possible the colonies have fewer restrictions when it comes to acquisition of a Mobile Suit if you can salvage and restore it yourself. And I don't know if it's considered to be a canon story but the basic premise of the Double Fake manga is that the protagonist owned a labour Mobile Suit that he customized to resemble a Gundam.

I feel like you missed the ibo mobile suits all together. There were the mobile suits at Dort colony, the UGY-R38 Spinner Rodi. These were civilian mobile suits that were mass produced for work and maintenance in outer space.
In Gundam 00 there was an entire battle that was fought by workers in a mining facility using work loaders. Also if you read up on it, the Mobil suits used at the beginning of the 00 series were weapon used worker mobile suits. They were meant for construction but were weaponized because they were easily modified so small nations or militias would buy them and turn them into weaponized mobile suits.

They'd more accurately be classified as a private militia. Its members ARE technically civilian and their organization owns those mobile suits. Same goes for Team Trinity, who owns and operates the Throne units.
There may well be other examples in other Gundam universes.

Fun little tidbit, there was a perfectly functioning and pilotable replica of the RX-78-2 (with a cutting saw instead of a beam saber) in Gundam Breaker 3 which is used to to help you get back to Earth in the main story after the orbital elevator stopped working and used again in a terrorist attempt to bring down the orbital elevator in the DLC storyline.
In the latter, about 40 or something years pass after the events of the last DLC mission and not only has technology advanced to the point of creating fully functional commercial mobile suits for civilian use based on the franchise that can operate in outer space but they’ve also constructed fully operational space colonies based on the Universal Century’s design. The sight of two unarmed Zaku IIs flying by and waving at the Gundam is certainly something you’d never see in the UC.

G Gundam actually has quite a few civilian MS. Gundam 00 has the distinct thing of being the only series I know of that doesn't have full civilian Petite MS or full MS. It did however have some Worker conversions of things like the Realdo and Anf mentioned in passing.

My favorite real-world case of military weapons being made into civilian tools is the Unimog. After WWII, the rest of the world told Germany, "You're not allowed to build tanks anymore, and you need to rebuild your farmland because famine." So Germany said "Fine. We're gonna use our tank factories and tank parts and make a tractor". And in typical Germany fashion, they made a WAY better version of a tractor and work vehicle than basically anything in the world... And now their tractor is being sold worldwide as a platform for an armored personnel carrier. XD

Also Anaheim Electronics is a civilian contractor not strictly military.

  • @kolinmartz

9:17 the Vist foundation pretty much has the analogous status of a military contractor/manufacturer in our own world. I’ve worked for and with defense contractors before. Those products aren’t owned by the military until they are adopted and sold. Defense contractors have fully functional defense articles that are under their ownership for testing purposes and as “dealer samples.” And these aren’t always just the ones they manufacture, they retain foreign examples and out of production examples to use as benchmarks for what they’re working on. They are monitored under the supervision of the DoD, Department of state, and Department of commerce and many more departments and agencies. Same as the Vist foundation and their relationship with the federation. The same with Anaheim electronics. People forget that they’re a civilian company in the UC timeline.
