    video #2: • pt2 React to Dream The...
    In this video I react to "Octavarium" by Dream Theater.
    Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, a classic prog-rock guitar teacher on TH-cam. I grew up on 70s progressive music but abandoned the genre by the 90s because it was too 'hard-edged' for me. My all-originals prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i went into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar).
    2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery of 30 years of great music which I'd paid no attention to- until now!
    I also will react to 70s and 80s prog that i overlooked, like gentle giant, camel, etc.

    24:07 Yep he gets it, round of applause for the greatest song ever written in history. Anyone else feel bad for the billions of people who will never listen to this song in there life (probally about 99% of people). No song will ever make me feel the way Octavarium does at the end. Dream Theater you guys are fucking legends and forever will be.

    Dream Theater's octavarium is the greatest Prog tribute song ever! begins with a tribute to Shine on you by Pink Floyd alternating with Steve Howe's Slider, the first part begins with Gabriel's flute and a very Hackett / Rutterford Guitar riff, for the second part a Heard of the Sunrise-style Bass jumps by YES with a very Waters lyrics in its composition! the third part accompanies us a tongue twister where the lyrics are parts of songs and phrases from Prog albums that influenced the band such as: Cinema Show by Genesis, Machine Massiah by YES and many others, the fourth part is that mixed web of Rush, Yes and ELP that it is impossible not to be surprised and a majestic close to the Close to the Edge style

    When it comes to DT, there is a lot going on. It is not simply a band making songs and Octavarium is one of the examples of their creativity going beyond their willingness to cut back just to please an audience. This song has a lot of spaces in it I am not entertained, and it is not my favorite of the long DT tracks(Though the last third is freaking insane!), but in itself Octavarium is a beautiful musical experiment in storytelling and I'm very happy I listened to it way back years ago when I first did because that led to a decade long love affair with this band. DT is actually the band that led me to discovering Tool, which has been my favorite band (Dream Theater is top five) since then!

    One of the bands finest songs. It's also great live. I've seen them almost 50 times live and that is zero times in the last 10 years due to real life conflict. Still one of my top bands of all time. Fun fact, for the few albums previous to this one, each album started on the note that the previous ended so that if you listened to them in complete order, it all flowed together. This song, and it's circular nature ended that cycle.

    I love the space given to the musical ideas, that’s the great benefit of accepting that you can take up a whole side of an album with a single song. But I accept that there is a fine line between giving space and being self indulgent and everyone has a different threashold.

    • @LordSpongy
      @LordSpongy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Their lead guitarist is on record as saying that he writes songs exactly as long as he wants and doesn't even enjoy short songs. The entire style he loves is that musical indulgence, not to show off to anyone, but to tell the story with their music regardless of if the song comes out fitting some arbitrary box. Petrucci, who's name I refuse to look up again to correct spelling, really loves playing those crazy long weird bits and watching them live you can tell how much fun they have playing. Not every band or even many bands can get away with this, but they really do have the talent to be fallacious and incredible (meaning worth it) at the same time.
      Of course that style is not for everyone and even I get a little over it sometimes with DT, especially some tracks.... but if there is any band who can get away with this, it's these overachievers. :)

    Thank you so much for reacting to this, really made my morning! I got worried hearing your tales of abandoning prog in the 90s and mentioning Dream Theater like they were a no-go for the channel; when in reality myself - and I'm sure a lot more of the loyal Wolfe-pack - knew there was so much more to the band than what you had first realized. This is a deep rabbit hole I hope you're willing to embark on in the future (as I'm sure many of us die-hards are). Recommendations include A Change of Seasons, The Glass Prison, and Scenes I and II of Scenes From a Memory (Regression, Overture 1928, and Strange Deja Vu). Keep spiraling out brother Dean!

    If it hadn't been for James LaBrie I'd been a massive Dream Theater fan. I just can't take his voice for some reason. I can't put my finger on it, it just push the wrong neural pathways when I hear it and it turns me off. I mean, the man can sing amazingly well, I just don't like the timbre of his voice. The last Dream Theater album I really liked and listened to was Awake (1994) and his voice sounded very different back then.

    This is definitely, one of their hardest tracks to keep up with. Personally i dont like the song structure, so much space left and personally there is no need to leave that much space just cuz you can. Ideas and melody lacks for a 24 min long song. But ironically this is one of their most soulful songs. Anyway last busy section leading into scream part and than leads to melody reprise section of the song is really solid and probably it is the reason why they leave so much space at start and middle section. In short words, It is not a great reprise surprise concept song, but good one.

    Even though I love prog.. I tend to find myself avoiding the prog that involves 20 minute songs. Increases the chances that I'll dislike portions of the song and enjoy the other portions, which has a big influence on whether I even add it to my collection of music. With that being said, most of this was pretty enjoyable. More so from halfway on. I enjoyed and open to hearing more Dream Theater.

      It’s one of those things you have to be in the mood for
      You gotta be willing to go on a journey. There are a lot of Dream Theater songs that aren’t nearly as long and more “digestible” for most listeners.
      Totally get your logic though. I used to be the same way.

      @nikovandh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shawnspider1282 The Dear Hunter is perfect for anyone wanting a music adventure. So artsy and lots of variety within their discography. I consider them the king of concept albums since Act 1 through 5 is one single storyline. That being said though, Act 4 and 5 are more digestible to a wider audience, and are great starting points as whole album (repeat) listens.
      I'm a huge fan of Leprous as well, with their newer stuff (Congregation, Malina, Pitfalls) also being a better starting point.
      Dirt Poor Robins is lighter, poppier theatrical fare overall, with many excellent adventurous songs spread throughout their discography.
      Bear Ghost is another theatrical rock band, at times sounding Disney'ish combined with a hard rock sound. Extremely talented. They aren't necessarily very prog, but border on it with certain songs.
      Of course, I love many Muse songs. No need for me to describe them!
      Aside from those mentions, I dabble in enjoying proggy songs here and there from other artists like newer Opeth, Caligula's Horse, Soen, Reign of Kindo, Porcupine Tree, The Pineapple Thief, Haken.
      I'm a fan of many other genres too, such as love songs, 80s retro synth, alt rock, smooth jazz, folk rock, indie, instrumental piano/cinematics/orchestral, etc.
