    The instrument at the beginning is a Hakken Continuum fingerboard, a kind of synthesizer that allows smooth transitions between individual notes as well as bending and modulation of the tone similar to what can be done on a guitar.

    man, this song is so powerful. so emotional. that's a theme that runs through all of Dream Theater's music. You have so much joy ahead of you on this musical journey!!

      Sam Jones It surely was! Thought this was really fun. It’s really different from what I usually listen to but that makes it even more interesting.

    Diving straight into the Dream Theater deep end here dude. Brilliant stuff for certain. What always blows my mind is those ridiculous unison sections between keyboard, guitar and bass. Such complicated, technical music and yet it never feels cold and machine like. They play with joy, passion, and all the heart they can muster and take you on spectacular journeys. And what’s even more amazing, they do this stuff live and often sound even BETTER than the studio albums while doing it. You’d be well served to check out anything from their live DVDs, Live at Budokan, Score, and Constant Motion are all excellent.
    So glad to see your reaction to this amazing band and hope you delve even deeper into their work. A lot of their music has deep meanings and tell specific stories from the lives of the band members, dealing with their own triumphs and failings.

    • @React4you
      @React4you  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brock O'Meles Yea this song was really different from what I usually listen to but I really enjoyed it even though it was a bit strange to me. A lot of the instruments were something I’m not used to hearing and the transitions was on drugs!😂 Would love to watch them live. That’s when you see if a band really is good or not!
      I really like songs like that. That are personal and with a lot of feelings and having a story you can follow!

    Dream Theater is my favorite progressive metal band along with Ayreon (musical project by Dutch songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist musician and record producer Arjen Lucassen). The majority of Ayreon's albums are dubbed metal operas because contain complex storylines featuring a host of characters, usually with each one being represented by a unique vocalist and guest musicians. Here some stuff:
    Ayreon - The Sixth Extinction (audio)
    Ayreon - Everybody Dies (ayreon universe live)
    Ayreon - The Day That The World Break Down (music video)
    Ayreon - Day Eleven: Love (music video)
    Ayreon - Aquatic Race (audio) and musicians.

    Welcome man to the world of the music of Dream Theater! The complexity of their music makes it only more enjoyable by time, the more you listen to it. It is often quite overwhelming the first times. Try and listen to the different instruments separately each time and then maybe focus on the lyrics.
    The part starting at 15:06 contains probably the most well-crafted nonsense lyrics ever made. From Wikipedia:
    "Full Circle is Mike Portnoy's ode to his musical influences, shown in the lyrics by several underlying references to his favorite songs, bands and more. This kind of composition is called Cento. Once again a reference is made to the unifying theme of the song ('Everything ends where it begins'). The enumeration using the last syllable/word as the beginning of the next reference enhances the message that everything is linked, a common theme throughout Dream Theater's albums. (e.g. "Day for Night, mare Cinema, Show"). There is also another subtle nod to the theme in the references themselves; the section begins and ends with a Pink Floyd reference.[4] In addition to this the keyboard rhythm is similar to the Genesis song "In the Cage."
    Isn't This Where We Came In? - Pink Floyd's The Wall
    "Sailing on the Seven Seas" - Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
    "Seize the Day" - Theme of the album, A Change of Seasons and a calque of the Latin phrase, Carpe Diem, which is also the third movement of the album's title track
    "Day Tripper" - The Beatles
    Per diem - Latin phrase and business term meaning "each day"
    "Jack the Ripper" - Morrissey
    "Tim "Ripper" Owens - ex-Judas Priest and Iced Earth singer
    Owen Wilson - actor
    Wilson Phillips - band
    "Supper's Ready" - Genesis
    "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" - The Beatles
    "Diamond Dave" - David Lee Roth's nickname and a song from his 2003 album of the same name
    Dave’s Not Here - Famous line from Cheech and Chong's self-titled album
    "Here I Come to Save the Day" - Mighty Mouse theme song and refrain
    Day for Night - Spock's Beard
    Nightmare Cinema - Dream Theater's band name when their players swap instruments
    "The Cinema Show" - Genesis
    "Show Me The Way" - Styx
    "Get Back" - The Beatles
    Home Again - Pink Floyd's "Breathe (Reprise)"
    "Flying off the Handle" - Peter Blegvad, King Strut
    "Handle with Care" - Traveling Wilburys
    "Careful with That Axe, Eugene" - Pink Floyd
    "Gene Gene the Dance Machine" - The Gong Show
    "Machine Messiah" - Yes
    "Light My Fire" - The Doors
    "Pinhead (Gabba Gabba Hey)" - The Ramones
    "Hey Hey, My My" - Neil Young
    "My Generation" - The Who
    Home Again - Pink Floyd's "Breathe (Reprise)"
    There's a lot more to disect of this song, checkt out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octavarium_(song)

    Dream Theater are great :)
    Looks like the keyboards and guitar got you confused :D So a few observations:
    - the intro was completely played by the keyboarder (Jordan Rudess), the first part on a Continuum Fingerboard ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuum_(instrument) ), the second part on a lap steel guitar ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lap_steel_guitar )
    - the lead part starting at 18:04 starts off with the guitar, at 18:15 the keyboards join in, too. You can hear the guitar on the left and the keyboards on the right ear then. Dream Theater are known for parts like that where guitar and keyboard play together :)

    First of all, this is my favorite song of all-time and I’m so sad I couldn’t see your face during the emotional guitar solo at the end (Razors edge).
    The Dream Theater drummer (Mike Portnoy), Guitarist (John Petrucci), and Keyboardist (Jordan Rudess) are in a band called Liquid Tension Experiment. If you want your mind absolutely blown away, react to Acid Rain (Live in LA 2008). Petrucci goes full world domination mode!!!

    Hey Karl,
    Dream Theater is a very good band, good to see you react to them.
    Question, I know you keep a list of songs to react to, songs people have requested. Is there a place we can see that list, so we can anticipate what you're going to react to next? Just curious.

    • @React4you
      @React4you  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      fnglert Hey fnglert!
      Yea and this song was freaking amazing. Too bad my camera broke down.. And I didn’t even notice I just kept reacting and did the outright and stuff and then afterwards I noticed it was gone
      I don’t really know how I would show it. I have more than 100 requests right now and wouldn’t it ruin the surprise a bit if you knew what was coming?🙂

    • @fnglert
      @fnglert 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, you're not wrong. Mostly I'm just curious t how long I have to wait before you do a song I requested, but that's probably a few months from now, if you do them chronologically.

    • @React4you
      @React4you  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      fnglert I checked the list and there are about 20 people before you unfortunately. I’m thinking about stop doing it chronologically though because of how many requests are coming. I think I’m gonna do a poll asking you guys what you would prefer.

    • @fnglert
      @fnglert 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      20? That's absolutely fine, that's a lot less than I was expecting.
      If you want my opinion, keep doing things chronologically for the most part, but if a band - not a specific song, but the band - is requested more than once, move them up a bit. Because obviously that band is getting some traction among your viewer base.

    • @React4you
      @React4you  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      fnglert I’m glad!🙂
