That is the most tone deaf thing around. Yes. History was brutal, ON ALL SIDES. should Britain be uniquely apologetic for that simply by way of being better at winning? Look into the history of slavery. more slavers and slavery supported by the Barbary slave traders than during the entire triangular trade. In fact, the triangular trade would have been unsupportable had not the African tribes SOLD their captives from internal struggles into slavery. Britain was pivotal in halting the transatlantic slave trade over 150 years ago. And yet you do not mention that MODERN slave trade still exists and you don't mention it because to do so would deny your victim/opressor narative.

it wasn't some 2000 years ago. It was 73 years ago. My grandfather is alive and 96 years of age. He remembers each and every thing, the communal riots and everything else. Whenever he talks about it, it brings tears to his eyes even now. A train full of dead women, children arrived in the state i live in. He saw that train. Many of the people he knew died in the partition. This was just the end of british rule. Even during the british rule, it was like hell. I am sorry to say no matter how forgiving you are, these kind of things are not easy to forget or forgive. These kind of memories travel from generation to generation. Ofcourse i agree it's not your fault.

Balbir I agree with you on this point. I have been watching the debates on this topic for the last four years and everyone is treating the colonisation of India and the atrocities that were carried out by the British as having occurred in some distant past. From a historical perspective this stuff is relatively new and like you rightfully said this was a mere 73 years ago which was in your grandfather's time. I am of Indian descent and writing from the Caribbean, my grand parents still tell stories of how they were stolen from India to work as Indentured Servants on British sugar plantations in the Caribbean. It should also be noted here that Indenture-ship was just another form of slavery and there are voluminous amounts of historical records in the Caribbean that documents this and what is even worse is that Indenture-ship in the Caribbean only came to an end after World War 2 which again is relatively recent. I find it so strange that British Millennials don't know about these things and this is considered recent history. I believe the Britishers who are still alive and were part of the colonial apparatus have made it their business to purposefully rewrite a more pleasant version of colonialism for their descendants in order to hide the shame and atrocities that they and their parents carried out in India and the rest of the Empire. I don't know if Britain should pay reparations or even could pay reparations but what I am sure about is that the colonisation of India did not happen in some distant past and there are people in this World who are still alive today that have first hand experience of British rule and the colonial experience.

I am an Anglo Indian of British ancestry, a race unintentionally created by the English Empire when both my great grandfathers fell in love with not only my grandmothers but this land too, India. The Anglo_Indians came together to build a better India, by Anglo Indians taking to the Education system as teachers and principals. Anglo India helped us get back in the last 60 years more educated and more aware. The Anglo-Indian has a complex mind with a split conscience, being, able to think from both perspectives giving us the edge We have our very own community in various parts of India. We have different types of food, dressing styles and have English both as our mother tongue and father tongue ( If that's a thing, lol). We are a small community, forgotten and dying, but a few of us still fight for who we are, we are a combination of all cultures here in India, We are India.

There are millions of families who were effected like ours, British people left India with no infrastructure, no industry, on top of that they agreed to divide the country to such ways that it has create a religious mishap regularly for years, and it'll still continue. It's really funny where all we grew up listing to is torture stories, which were done to us from some outsiders, and you all grew up listing to is world war and how great your country was. Dear Rebecca, thank you for showing us this video. As an Indian, I can say that Indians never hate British people despite all the oppression that our forefathers had to bear. They fought against the rulers as this was our Dharma. Having said that, the current British government should apologize for the masacre of Jalianwala Bag mass murder. We can not demand because we are waiting for the time when the apologies will come from the heart. Also, the division of India and Pakistan was the worst thing which British rulers had executed before departing in 1947. We are still fighting with each other. Undivided India could have been as strong as China today if India-Pakistan did not have to spend huge money on fighting war. We could have had Bangladesh also together. However, all extreme challenges make a living being more competent. I know India will lead the world one day not only with her economic strength but with virtues which is the core of this ancient land. Please do not feel sorry as a British as you do not have any control over the flow of time and events. As a human, of course, anyone will feel sorry and would pray for those who suffered and finally gave up their mortal bodies. As the land believes in immortality of human beings, those were the most sacred souls who gave us inspiration to fight back and overcome fears within us. Love and regards to you as always ! Take care dear 🤗

I realised, after hearing Mr Tharoor speak on this topic, that every European country came to terms with its colonial past. Germany & Italy are examples given here. France, Belgium and Holland have each made generous gestures by according former subjects citizenship/settlement rights. Britain stands apart in comparison. In addition, France and others have included their dark colonial past as part of their curriculum and therefore their educational systems are held in regard for fairness and rigour.
The longer Britain, Spain and Portugal dither, the harder it will be for them to come to peace with their past.

As someone who hails from the Indian Subcontinent, I deeply appreciate your sense of remorse on behalf of your country, UK. Colonial history has deliberately never been taught in UK schools because the UK Government does not want its citizens to know the in-depth ugly details of the extent in which people’s lives in Britain’s far-flung colonies have been totally ruined as a result of the British colonial enterprise. I think it’s high time the people and the Government of UK openly acknowledge their crimes against their past colonies and offer unconditional apologies to all of them, not just India. Reparations are most definitely owed.

In fact, many don't really even know that history, or actually even care...knowing and caring about two to three hundred year old history is to expect a lot from them. But remember, those who forget about history(negative), are doomed to repeat it, or watch it repeated. In so many ways, unfortunately, we are watching it being repeated. Colonisation never ended, it just took on different avatars...look around you. I respect your opinions and sentiments and that's why I watch your reactions. I would personally be happy even if 1 pound was paid each year for 200 years for the 200 years they oppressed us. That was really commendable.
