In this video I react to In the Presence of Enemies parts one and two
Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, a classic prog-rock guitar teacher on TH-cam. I grew up on 70s progressive music but abandoned the genre by the 90s because it was too 'hard-edged' for me. My all-originals prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i went into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar).
2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery of 30 years of great music which I'd paid no attention to- until now!
I also will react to 70s and 80s prog that i overlooked, like gentle giant, camel, etc.

It was supposed to be one song but they decided to break them up. One thing that's awesome is hearing how the end of the first song leads into the second whereas it also perfectly leads into the 2nd song on the album.

Yea maybe but not to react to, it’s a whole journey you first have to sit down with the booklet and read the lyrics and see what characters are speaking at what time so you know exactly what is going on, same with the Astonishing, you can’t just listen to it you gotta read along to get used to it

While I hog hardest for more classic DT, especially the chunkier bits of Awake, this track has always been up there for me. They really kind of embraced fictional writing and the contemporary heavy metal sound at the time and the album wasn't bad at all. Couple tracks haven't dated well for me but that's music always.

I absolutely love that you put words on the screen expressing your thoughts instead of interrupting the music. I understand why some people do that but part of the appeal, to me, is hearing the song again but I understand that I've listened to it hundreds of times so it's not like I'm missing anything. I just prefer not pausing it if I don't have to.

I'm a huge DT fan but I'd remove the section around 9:15 to 13:15 in part 2. There's pretty much always a song like this from each album where the structure is fairly typical but has an extended bridge section which doesn't serve the song. I get that the thrash section was building up into something but 4 minutes of solos isn't really what I want.
