Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, a classic prog-rock guitar teacher on TH-cam. I grew up on 70s progressive music but abandoned the genre by the 90s because it was too 'hard-edged' for me. My all-originals prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i went into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar).
2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery of 30 years of great music which I'd paid no attention to- until now!
I also will react to 70s and 80s prog that i overlooked, like gentle giant, camel, etc.

Now you're ready for the epic of all of their epics, A Change of Seasons! You should definitely check out the live version from Score, they performed it with an orchestra. It was simply an amazing performance.

If you ever want to revisit this song in your own time, I'd definitely check out the live "Score" version. Absolutely incredible performance.
Nice reaction and comments btw 👍

This makes sense why I love this song so much. I didn't vibe with it when I first listened to it years ago but the more I got into prog, i gave it another shot and man it's just pure magic. They take so much influence from the greats.

As someone who has actually seen this performed live, I can say that it's a whole other experience. Really wonderful, and impossible to replicate on a stereo, though their live album "Score" does about as good a job as possible. And actually, I still wear the Octavarium tour T-shirt I bought at that show, as one of my pyjama shirts, 14 years later! Anyway, I know by now you've done _Metropolis Pt. 1_ and _A Change of Seasons,_ so you're well on your way to experiencing the "best of" Dream Theater. But there is one pinnacle that you have yet to experience...the entire "Metropolis Pt. 2 - Scenes from a Memory" album. It's a breathtaking concept album with a mix of short and long songs that lends itself to being split into a few chunks for a reaction (if you're not prepared to react to the whole album, IN ORDER...don't bother reacting to any of it). This is my suggestion for splitting it into manageable pieces, if you do decide to react to it:
    Part 1 - tracks 1, 2 and 3 (10 min, 55 sec)
    Part 2 - tracks 4, 5 and 6 (19 min, 12 sec)
    Part 3 - tracks 7 and 8 (18 min, 22 sec)
    Part 4 - tracks 9 and 10 (13 min, 05 sec)
    Part 5 - tracks 11 and 12 (18 min, 37 sec)
I see that you're not averse to reacting to long-ish songs, and none of these groups of tracks add up to more than 20 minutes (you've now done a couple Dream Theater songs longer than that)...so this should prove feasible. Maybe do one reaction a week or something...I dunno, up to you. *But this is Dream Theater's best album by far, AND their most popular amongst fans* (the only disagreement comes from some older fans, who still prefer their breakthrough album "Images & Words" from 1992...but they are a minority) - if you want to hear the whole deal - compositional, instrumental, vocal and lyrical supremacy...this is the place to go. Progressive metal at its late '90s peak.

You will see that in Illumination Theory (live Boston), The count of tuscany ...

I'm glad you seemed to enjoy it Dean! It was the first Dream Theater song I had ever heard 15 years ago and I still get chills when I listen to it today.

I enjoy watching you break down the reaction like this. It reminds me of Genesis (my first concert in my teens) at times too. Take care Dean.

Really enjoyed that! This song and the whole Octavarium album is incredible in so many ways! So many hidden details, references, easter eggs, etc. I suggest to skim through the wikipedia page for this song and find out!

Yep this song was created as an ode to the trailblazing prog rock bands like genesis and yes! It’s what gives the similar vibes and tones

A homage to prog rock. Floyd's crazy diamond intro,(Fminor instead of Gminor lol 😄) Genesis Supper ready/Cinema Show in many places.
You should try out Panic Attack or Never Enough from the same album. This time a homage to Muse. The band were big fans of Absolution and can be clearly heard in these 2 tracks. Think Stockholm Syndrome/Hysteria.

I have to say that this is my favorite of Dream Theater's epics, just so beautiful and amazing. I agree with you on not noticing the length of their songs, honestly all of them flow so well I don't realize how long it's been until I'm done whether it be 7 minutes or 43. I also love the pedal steel guitar they had in the intro (it's honestly one of my favorite parts in the song).
I commented a long while back about some suggestions and I'll mention just one here:
Full album react to Coheed and Cambria- The Second Stage Turbine Blade
That was their first album they released and the (sort of) beginning to the concept story that arcs over all but one of their albums. I'll be looking forward to your next videos and hopefully you check out Coheed and Cambria, I think you might enjoy what they have to offer. Cheers and keep on rocking!!

The unison of the guitar and keyboards reminds me of the work Jeff Beck did with Jan Hamer.

The part about "The Bees" John Petrucci actually does that live on the Once in a Live Time cd. It's during the epic guitar solo. th-cam.com/video/my1g5awBEF0/w-d-xo.html Skip to 7:08 for bees. But he does versions of it several times earlier on the song. And there is a live version of "Whole Lotta Love" that Page does the Bee thing as well. Plant even sings, "I hear a whole lotta buzzin, sounds like my little honey bee." I wanna say it's on "How the West was won." But it might be on the bootleg with the flying iron pig on the cover.

This song is sort of them coming to terms with their influences, and embracing instead of rejecting how much they owe to the people who came before them.
Hence the shine on You crazy diamond/Cinema show references. The lyrics towards the end each reference another song on this album, and the movements in this song shifts in key signature much like the previous songs on the album do as well.
This is about as pretentious as Dream Theater got. And that includes their earlier album with a 40 minute title track (don't get me wrong, I love _six degrees of inner turbulence_ a whole lot, but it's an investment to listen to)

Hey Dean, love hearing your thoughts on some of these tracks. Came here for your Mars Volta reviews. You should check out King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. A lot to dig into with them, but "Crumbling Castle" is a great track off of their most proggy album, Polygondwanaland, and the live performance on KEXP is great!

The album is based on the notes on a keyboard. This song is very complex. This is part of a trilogy. 2 albums plus this one all go together

I think if you want this band to truely stun you, The Glass Prison is your best bet. I must admit Glass Prison is the DT track i search for people reacting to because it is like the 7empest of DT tracks.
