This Flower Farm is STILL BLOOMING!

  • The Frost is approaching, but until it arrives, our flower farm will still be productive and pumping out the bouquets for us to sell. Some of our plants, like the Sedums will survive past the frost, but we will still have an abundance of dried flowers to arrange afterwards. In this video Serina gives you a tour of of 2.5 acre farm from top to bottom, skipping all the veggies sections and just focusing on all the flowers or fillers we have growing right now. We have beautiful late summers here in Kelowna BC and now that the cooler nights have arrived, and some moisture along with it, things are very lush and happy after a long, very hot, very dry summer. My favourites, the zinnias, won't be with us for much longer, so we make these videos as a journal of all we have accomplished during this season. If you enjoy our videos, please leave a like, as it means this video gets pushed out to a wider audience, and along with it our message to grow your own food, without the use of pesticides or herbicides, or support other local farmers who do.

    Everyone is looking for an update on my, Serinas, health. I'm improving, and feel a lot better. But I'm still not 100% and back to work yet. It's seeming like the issue might be a stomach problem, not a breathing problem, so I'm on some new medications and might need some more tests.

    My dried flower business years ago ‘Victorian Rose’ when I would pull out some of the dried flowers I would have a bottle of water that I would mist them down to where they’re slightly moist again so it’s pliable to work with to arrange where you’re not breaking anything.. ..they will dry again perfectly.

    I know the flowers represent a major part of your business and required/s a ton of work and money. But just seeing those fields of color made me smile. I don’t think I could do what you do, because I’d be too busy just drinking in the beauty to do any actual work. 🥰💤 When I first started watching this channel, I didn’t get the whole ‘Team Veggies/Flowers’ thing. When I figured it out, I went Team Veggies, easy. (I totally agree with the’ tomato-based lifeform 🍅❤️) But as this year has gone on, I’ve completely converted to Team Flowers. Well, 80% converted. I mean, technically my favorite Veggies start out as flowers, or end up as flowers. So… yeah. 😆😅😄❤️🌺🍅

    There have probably been many people asking but wouldn't having honey bees work synergistically on your veggie and flower farm? Perhaps if you didn't want to work with them yourselves maybe lease out your farm flowers to a beekeeper? Work it out in trade and sell honey at the farmers market. I'd definitely buy if I saw honey at your farm stand.

    • @YouCantEatTheGrass

Just wondering if yours may do better planted down hill a bit farther, they may hold more rain farther down.? just a thought.

    Maybe you could make an experiment corner of the carden where you plant those 'could that work' and 'that would never work' flowers spiecies. That way you see how they like your soil and weather, see how they sell and are suited for flower arangement. You should do some R&D

    • @YouCantEatTheGrass
      @YouCantEatTheGrass  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm almost always running a few experiment plants or varieties. I had a lot of stuff that I was trialing in the flower farm this year. I usually grow a chunk of something when doing the experiment though, so I can give it a proper test, not just 1 or 2 of something. The large marigolds are a good example - they've grown well, and sold well, so they will be coming back next year. Last year I grew a lot of globe amaranth, but it was fussy to harvest and design with, so I grew only a handful, to have some for drying.

    Living in Campbell River, you know my climate. I have dahlias that make others envious. Why? We (hand) water in the morning and then again in the evening. When the heat wave hit this summer, we also did a quick water in the middle of the day because as much as (for us) dinnerplate dahlias love the heat, they also love the water. I mean, just look at the thick, hollow stems, that's a lot of water to keep the flow going. Also, one reason we hand water is we can blast the whole plant with water which seems to eliminate any and all bug damage. If you would like to see what my dahlias look like with all that watering (and heavy composting) I did a short video (less than 2min) on my pups which happened to take place in the front yard dahlia garden. The dahlias are very flush with flowers, yet I do pick between 15 and 25 flowers a day. Here's the video; th-cam.com/video/W4sUdHmps6Y/w-d-xo.html

    My flowers are still going to, but my zinnias my pink giants well there not blooming AS big and puffy there lil due to less sun. I have the black on there leaves to mold to dense at the bottom and not enough heat to dry it. Hey I wish u don't take this wrong at all, seriously when I say don't take it wrong lol! Your garden at heart and we tend to not care what we look like when it comes to adding more attractive clothing. I'm soo guilty of it to. When I'm outside 6hrs a day I'm tired. Plus taking care of kids. We pull our pretty healthy hair back and thro a hoody on. That's my most comfortable way ever!! But we need love to and a rewind day!! Your young Like me pretty like me! So I hope next summer you will put time for yourself and be selfish one a week. When we pamper our feet, hands, skin, it feels good it feels dam great lol. You have all potentials for selling more and at the same time feeling good about ourselves. I mentioned makeup before but that's not even an essential but putting your hair down and wearing somthing nicer than an old t-shirt lol to your market stand!! You put the flower crown on your husband...... it's neat and I love it but you need to look refreshed and not tired when selling. People are attractive to what looks better and a simple comfortable sun dress/hippy dress what ever they want to call them lol looks alot better on you than an t-shirt! Take 2 pictures a rainy cloudy pic or a sunny bright mountain pic what pic is gonna grab your eye? Easy question!! I hope Ian is supporting what I'm saying❤❤❤❤❤❤
    I'm a huge fan of you and your wonderful family!

      I can't wait till we start planting across from the farm, and really start filling in. We have space for another 30 or so beds still

    Yay! You have African Marygold. We also have that here in the Philippines and they withstand a very hot weather here. I'm amazed that they can also survive very cold weather. Your flowers are amazing! Your farm is amazing! Everything's amazing! I love it!!!

    If you end up with a lot of great dried flowers, you might want to consider making some small headpieces for little girls and just add in a little bit of tulle to them. the tulle is inexpensive, but adds a princess vibe to a headband or crown of flowers for any little girl.

    Just wondering if you have tried New England Aster varieties in your perennial area. They bloom later and are supposed to be good cut flowers. They can really handle frost and they appreciate drier fall weather.

      We originally grew it to eat, but its not my favorite. I would categorize it as a sour green, and I prefer a spicy or bitter green personally

    Are you zone 5 (Canada) which means zone 4 in the USA or zone 5 USA which means zone 6 in Canada?

    • @YouCantEatTheGrass
      @YouCantEatTheGrass  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usda zone 5, Canadian 6. I say usda because most of the audience is American and I got annoyed with people telling me I should be able to grow warm stuff if zone 6, lol. But, if you are Canadian- since learning they are different, I've often found plants in stores labeled as the usda zone number, not the Canadian one, so I'd buy with the lower number in mind if you don't specifically know the plant

    Love your Farm! Try Some Asters, perfect perennial fall flower. Also, next year try pole beans all over your property boundary fence, fresh and dried. Easy, no maintenance crop, fresh all season and dried beans for fall. My favs, rattlesnake pole fresh beans, and Cherokee Trail of tears, fresh or as a dry black bean, and Good Mother Stallard, for dry soup beans. Thanks, and Good Job.

    My summer in northern Alberta was a little hotter than normal. I couldn't keep up on the Dahlia watering for my pots with twice a day! One of my two plants really struggled to come back and never returned to the beauty the other had.
    Unfortunately, fall is here for me and I sadly said goodbye to all my summer blooms this past Saturday. 😭
