Thanksgiving Is BIG MONEY At The Farmers Market | Vlog

  • Thanksgiving means a big family dinner, and a special occasion such as that requires a beautiful fresh bouquet of flowers as a centerpiece for all to admire. I often wonder about the pleasant conversations that our flower arrangements bring about, it is fun that when we make a video featuring one of these bouquets they can be admired long after they are thrown into the compost pile. This week is our Thanksgiving market, and they have traditionally been one of our best markets of the season. Not only is there a flush of fall flowers, and our last harvest of summer veggies before our first frost, but there is the most important element of all for a successful farmers market, an abundance of shoppers with large grocery lists. People are in the mood to spend, they need salad greens, as well as herbs and root veggies, and lots of people are looking to bring flowers as a gift. That means, if you bring the goods, no matter the weather, you are guaranteed a good performing market. This week we had our roadside stand in full effect, and even when the market ended, the sales continued, with our roadside stand selling fresh flower bouquets as fast as we could make them. It was a great market and a record for roadside sales, which added up to our best weekend of food and flower sales of our 3 years farming.

Have you thought about hiring someone to paint your roadsidestand with pictures of veggies? I mean, your merchandise is so cool, maybe transfer part of that background onto the hut to visualise what's inside

@@Katy32344 that's probably not accurate. Have you ever run a farm? Plus a TH-cam channel? I've at least run a farm and that alone is insanely busy. And their farm is way bigger than mine. There's no way they have time to implement or even acknowledge every idea that someone on TH-cam mentions. I don't think they're ignoring people. They just only have so much time in one day. Chances are they at least take ideas mentioned into consideration and discuss them between each other behind the scenes.

@@tinaholbrook9719I'm not going back to look, but I'm nearly 100% I did not say they are ignoring people. I believe I said they don't appear to take advice. It's sweet that you feel some desire to "stick up for" this couple, but putting words in my mouth is not the way to do so. 1. I didn't say they ignore people. 2. I said they don't seem to take advice. 3. That is not an insult. 4. There is no need to defend them, as there was no insult. In addition, I have run a farm and held a full-time job at the same time. Not that it matters.

I'm shocked fresh herbs don't sell well until Thanksgiving. I cook at least twice a week with fresh herbs and have always felt they bring a brightness that amplifies even simple meals. Can't do without them! The more I learn about how nutritious they are I have tried to increase even more the herbs I eat and cook with fresh.

Maybe you can make some hang-able wooden signs to hand on the white fence and outside of the shed with the names of the veggies you currently have available. I know I like to be able to see what a stand has available as I drive past. If you have signs you can hang easily and take down easily then you can easily hang up the signs for what you have available that day and store the extras under the table in the shed so they are ready to hang up when you need them

You said fresh herbs never sell.. but have you thought about selling dried herbs? Even all the basil leaves that get thrown out when you strip them for filler, all that can be another product at the market. You can also dry and leave the packaging for the winter time because it wont spoil. Just throwing out idea, I know I'd much rather buy dry herbs from a source I trust than whatever Walmart offers lol.

Did you ever consider to grow roses? I bought our garden from an old lady and she was growing beautiful roses. First I thought they will be difficult to take care of. They are not. The roses that the old lady was growing bloom from the beginning of May until November, they had no problem with frost. Once they are established you don't have to give them extra water 💦 They survived the extreme hot and dry summer that we had 2018 because the roots go 2 m deep into the ground. Roses even look good in bouquets 💐 when they're dried. Mine are growing along the fence to the neighbors. A great perennial - when nothing else is blooming anymore they bring colour to the garden and in winter you have the rosehips which look good as well.

So on the herbs. Try combinations. like a Italian herb blend or other common blends based on what you have.
Also drying your herbs to sell.

Your bouquet skills have come on so much since you started making them. Love that sedum and cafe au lait bouquet the best. The sedum is such a great foundation flower to the cream ones. Would you ever thing of doing flowers by post? Letterbox flowers are really popular here in the U.K.

Too much involved in shipping fresh flowers, especially when there are so many other local farms everywhere. But we are still trying to figure out if we can ship dried stuff

Ohh wow, what a pleasant episode, got a big relief when ceilina had opened the door only to show the great spectacular bunches of flowers cut ahead of the frost.
Equally happy that you have exceeded the sales target in terms of flower bouquets and assorted vegy.
Glad to see you all back on track and wishing you all a happy thanksgiving. 🦃🦃🍁🍁🍁❤❤

You are so inspirational Serena. I can't imagine the volume of work you do knowing you are also unwell. Your walk up to the road stand said quite a bit. I hope your health improves. Take care.
