Lokka install into Pajero Montero Shogun

  • Hey everyone. This is just a quick how to video on installing a LOKKA specifically into a Mitsubishi Pajero, Montero, Shogun, in a home workshop.
    Although the fitting of the actual LOKKA will likely be the same in most vehicles, the removal of the diff center and setting of the backlash may be different. For example, the Mitsubishi diff is adjusted with shims, whereas say, the Nissan Patrol diff is adjusted with a threaded collar.
    As with any job undertaken on your vehicle the sole responsibility of any work done rests with the person doing the job. And while this is considered a rather simple job If you do not feel confident in doing it, please don't!!!
    For IFS vehicles this job should take between 3-5 hours.
    I am not a qualified mechanic but i love to learn new and better ways of doing things, so if you know a better way to do it please feel free to share it in the comments.
    The LOKKA can be purchased from this company in Australia www.4wdsystems...

      Thanks Jared! I did do a video at a 4wd park but my dash cam fried about 2 minutes into it, i'll get around to it another day.
      As for how it goes. Really good!! As long as you have wheels on the ground it will pull you through anything! Of course, if you bottom out in some ruts or your tyres aren't right for the terrain, you won't be going anywhere no matter what you have. LoL
      It does change how your rig will handle on firmer surfaces. Like you won't be able to drive in 4H anymore cos the steering gets super grabby, that's when it's better to have a switchable locker.

    Hey bud it's a little late to tell you this now but if you swap the splined gears from side to side your clearances can change. It might have been just enough to get what you needed. It's also important to note that some of these lockers don't use spacers on the side so if I can't get the clearances right I call the locker manufacturer. If it's too tight it won't unlock on that side, too loose and it can slip and chew itself up.

      At the time i purchased mine, they didn't do one for the smaller 7.25" fronts. Only for the 8 inch fronts. I couldn't find anyone who did any type of locker for the 7.25. I almost was going to weld the diff centre on my NH 2.5, but i ended up getting the NK 2.8 which had the bigger diff.

    Great vid mate, I have the NL 98 model Paj myself and have been thinking of getting the lokka for the front, just a quick question, I was told on line that you need manual hubs for these things to work, is that correct?

    • @wilddonkeyadventures
      @wilddonkeyadventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate. As far as i know, yeah that's correct, not sure why it's a problem if you're only running it in 2wd, maybe it's the way the super select is set up.
      You will lose the ability to drive in 4 high on the road though as the steering gets very grabby. Not a big issue for my application as i only really go into 4wd when i'm off road. If you like to use the 4 high setting for better traction in slippery situations a switchable locker would be a better alternative.

    • @danielmckenzie9880
      @danielmckenzie9880 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the quick reply mate, so I take it you fitted manual hubs to your NK before fitting the Lokka? How has it affected the super select 4WD system? No changing on the fly any more I'm guessing?

    • @wilddonkeyadventures
      @wilddonkeyadventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@danielmckenzie9880 Yeah it had AVM hubs on it when i got it, but they were rubbish and fell apart when i tried to service them. (Plastic internals) Can't buy replacement parts for them either. So i grabbed a set of AISINs from the wreckers.
      You can still kind of change on the fly, but you need to have your hubs locked beforehand. Not a big issue for me as i use 4wd only off road.

      Yep, when you engage the front axles they work straight away. It's more or less an unlocker. while you're travelling in a straight line the axle is locked. But when you turn they unlock.
      This is a possible advantage over a switchable locker in the front. I say possible because i haven't personally used a front switchable locker but i have heard from those that have, that steering is very difficult with a front switchable locker engaged. Whereas with the Lokka it's barely noticeable off road.

      It's out of an NK turbo diesel. And thats the front diff. They don't do an auto lokka for the rear on them because their LSD's are really good and the guy i spoke to said they maybe get 1 request every few years for the rears so there really isn't a demand for them.

Driving in 4H on the road is not advisable as the steering gets quite grabby. As for noise, I couldn't really hear any. Possibly due to mine being a diesel so it's a bit rattly to begin with.

    What lokka is this. And how is it activated and deactivated. I have a gen2 and want a rear lokka

    • @wilddonkeyadventures
      @wilddonkeyadventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This particular diff lock is the Lokka from 4wd systems. It's an auto locker so you don't need to do anything to activate it or deactivate it. Once you engage 4wd it's locked and it unlocks when you corner.
      This particular unit though isn't made for the rear of the Pajero though. I rang up 4wd systems and they said they don't get enough requests for a rear auto locker so they haven't made them. They also said the Limited slip diff in theses is also so good that it's not really necessary.
      If you did want a rear diff lock for the Pajero you would need an air locker or an E locker.

      @@sv_endless6340 Yeah i found the LSD didn't do that much as well. Possibly because mine has 400,000km on it so it could be a bit worn. But from what i've been told, if you put your handbrake on it can load up the LSD and give you a kind of locked function. I haven't tried that as yet though.
