    Realise this video was posted up a while ago but found it really helpful. Need to pull my diff to fit a locker this weekend and esp the clutch had me wondering. Thanks heaps!

      Replying to my own comment I know. I did this job today.. I took the axle out completely. Mine is a challenger (montero sport). Very similar. I split the axle between the diff and the clutch.. Did not need to remove the through drive shaft or split that from the clutch. Just a little bit less work

    Great step by step vidz. I've got a Gen 3 Paj and always wondered if this could be installed. I've got a more confidence to DIY with this guide. Cheers!

    Tip: use the short spindle axle to line-up the splines of side gear and spacer on left side, before re-inserting the halfshaft ...

    Leaving traction control on for the unlocked axle is not a problem, and it will generally sit there doing nothing.
    Occasionally it acts on the unlocked axle and improves your off road ability.
    I have actually modified my Paj so that the traction still works on the front axle when the factory rear diff lock is on.

    So when you reinstall the driver side short axle with the C clip. Does the C clip interfere with the locker operaton.
    I noticed that you used grease in the locker splines
    Does this help with C clip axle installation?

    Did you install on the rear differential to? Why did you use a Lokka brand and not an Aussie Locker? Whats your montero year? Thanks

    • @Unfastened
      @Unfastened  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, didnt install one on the rear. If I wanted to lock the rear I would go ARB, since it is selectable. I used LOKKA because it is made in Australia. 2008 (NS) Model. Last of the petrol v6

    Hi Unfastened, many thanks for your video.
    As one of the main points of the super select transmission is the full time 4wd, which will be the handling characteristics in the occasions where the ss lever is on 4wd with open center diff? For example when on a snowy uphill road i have to make a turn? There will be some change of the steering i can get used to, or a dangerous and unpredictable behavior?
    Thanks

    • @Unfastened
      @Unfastened  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, so your weather conditions would change whether or not you would install an automatic locker. If you intend to drive around on sealed roads in 4H (not common in Australia but I understand you might if you live overseas), you would be better off installing an air or e-locker instead. That way you can turn it on/off selectively and it would allow you to use 4H on sealed roads and still have maximum traction when offroading in 4H, 4HLC or 4LLc

    Hi Unfastened, thanks for your great video, its really well done. I want to ask if yo know how I can disable the NT Pajero's auto locking hubs, maybe by fitting a switch or something. I tow a 2.8t caravan, and when I park it, I would like to engage low range to save the gearbox etc. but obviously I dont want the car to go into 4 wheel drive wheel on hard surfaces. Your advice will be much appreciated.

    • @Unfastened
      @Unfastened  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a real pain that Pajero's don't have hubs isn't it.. What you need is called an electric in line air solenoid . It would be fitted to the air line that runs to your front diff actuator, and a switch would have to be fitted in the cab. When the switch in your cab is off, it prevents air from reaching the front diff 4x4 actuator so that even though the gearbox/tfcase is in low range, the front diff wouldn't be actuated (so the front diff would be in regular 2H mode). When the switch is 'On' then the car can do it's regular thing and air is allowed to pass through to the front diff actuator.

      @@Unfastened fantastic tnx for your help. Would you know of a link where I can find a diagram of where the air pipe runs under the car. The rest I will be able to sort out myself

    • @Unfastened

      Hi, If you're in 2 wheel drive, your pajero will drive as normal mate. When you have it in any of the 4 wheel modes, the front diff will be locked.

    I need a hand, want to install lockers front and rear on a 2001 3.5 v6. Are both diff the same? Which brand are they? Can you let me know the web to buy the locker that you install?
    Thanks

    • @Unfastened
      @Unfastened  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      lokka.com/ Just choose your make and model or give them a call they are really helpful over the phone. You would only put an auto lokka on the front mate. You need a switchable locker (AIR or E Locker) on the rear otherwise an auto locker would lock up in wet weather, potentially causing an accident.

  • @M0N33R
    @M0N33R 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the clarification at the end wrt to driving characteristics. It's very important to have the autolock disengaged in 2H. Knowing about the force to keep the steering in the center is valuable info. I heard that there is a ticking sound from the diff as you turn when in 4H and the lokka is skipping those teeth - can you confirm? Also, while you start turning and experience the force, does it feel like the car wants to keep going forward? (this is what happens in sand with rear diff engaged)

    • @Unfastened
      @Unfastened  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi. Yes so in 4h on hard ground the teeth pass over each other to allow differentiation and you hear the clicking sound. But in 4h on sand or other loose or soft conditions the teeth won't click as it's locked. And yes any time the diff is locked (4h 4hlc or 4llc) there is a mild feeling that the car wants to continue straight. So basically heavy steering but you can still turn.

      @@Unfastened, many thanks for quick and valuable response! I'm still contemplating if this is a necessary add-on for dune bashing, considering it will cost me approx. 800 AUD in total (with the drawbacks) vs. investing in tracks for the difficult time of getting bogged.

    Hey mate any chance you can give me some advice on re installing the clutch to the side of the diff, the doesn’t seem to sit the whole way into the diff so there is a gap between the clutch and diff, I have photos to show what I’m talking about if I could get in contact with you that would be great. Cheers

    • @Unfastened
      @Unfastened  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the slow reply mate. My advice is just rock the clutch assembly side to side while applying inward pressure and it'll slip into place. Hope you got it sorted.

    I guess this means you cannot use 4H on sealed roads like on the wet etc

    • @Unfastened

      If you *did* want to use 4h on sealed roads, then I wouldn't recommend a front automatic. I'd go an electric or air locker.

    • @Unfastened
      @Unfastened  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There shouldn't be any unusual noises. I know some people engage 4x4 while the car is moving. In my experience it's always better to stop, have the car in Neutral and then change to 4x4 mode.
