I couldn’t agree more David. I remember hanging out of trains approaching and leaving Lime Street, amazed at the sheer size of the cuttings and tunnels. I seem to remember them being cold and damp all the time, irrespective of the season up on the surface! And boy did the roar of a Peak or a 31 echo around in there!! Wonderful memories!
@@kartwheelkarl They were almost scary, especially the first few times you go through them.. and it was the midland region, where DMU numbers began with M instead of E, which impressed me no end! The last time I went through with a loco it was a 31 on the Preston/Blackpool trains.
Really enjoying this set of videos and cannot thank you enough for posting. I was 23 in 1986 and spent my spare time out and about whenever I could. The memories this brings back are priceless...
You are more than welcome Bib. Receiving comments like this really makes my day. I was 17 in 1986 so, like you, these films are pure unadulterated nostalgia for me, and curating them has been an absolute pleasure. Can you believe Alan didn’t think anyone else would be too interested in his collection?
@@kartwheelkarl The very reason why I now look back gutted I did not record the many things I enjoyed. Thank God people like Alan had the foresight to do so....
Superb capture!Just as I remember it as a child. The class 86 was stabled briefly in what was then known as the station 'neck'.It was abolished when the layout was remodelled in the summer of 2018.
Really glad you’re enjoying the collection Stevie? Sadly, having been born in 69, my memories of the mid 70s are limited to shopping trips from our home in Reddish to Piccadilly on a 108 or 104 DMU. I was always fascinated by Piccadilly, but my mum wouldn’t let me hang around to watch the trains. By 1981 I was old enough to go on my own, but I wish I could have more memories from the 70s.
Wonderful footage - Lime Street was a bit of a shithole back in the mid 80s. £8.00 for a child's weekly Coast & Peaks Rover - I pay £79.50 now & can only use it 4 in 8 days. These videos are fantastic - my childhood right there - many thanks.
You’re more than welcome Colwyn Boy. Ahhh...the old coast and peaks rover! I would get one of these every summer holiday. Great value. Happy days bashing locos along the north wales coast. There was even a return working of a 47 with nine mk 2 first class coaches down to Blaenau , a fill in turn for a Brum to Llandudno if I remember rightly. Wonderful!
@@colwynboy7279 Absolutely Colwyn Boy. My parents had a caravan at Talacre. I spent many hours as a child perched on the end of Prestatyn Station. At the time, I was frustrated because of the endless stream of class 40 hauled trains!! How stupid does that sound now? Wonderful memories, looking back. I used to ride my bike up to the bridge next to the disused Talacre station and watch the class 40 +:class 25 double header shunting the loose coupled coal wagons at Point of Ayr Colliery. Absolutely fabulous.
Wow, what I wouldn't give to have a 9 coach loco hauled train on a Trans-Pennine service today instead of being squashed into a 3-car DMU!!!! Yes today's services are faster, cleaner and more frequent, but at least BR gave everyone a chance of getting a seat!... not something you can take for granted nowadays!
Well Soundseeker, it’s now a year on from your comment and your wish has almost come true! Loco hauled travel is once again available on the Trans Pennine route, albeit with only five coaches I believe? Unfortunately, I have no way of travelling on the new services to compare them against the old mk1 and mk2 sets but what do you think of them?
Not really....just a staging point to have a quick attachment to a arriving train....could get to most platforms during shunting duties.....no where to get off loco....dark and damp miserable shunt neck....1986 the year I started on British rail at lime St.....happy days
@@grahamallen1970 I remember the Loco that ran up the shunt neck and smashed into the dead end, it was on Allerton Depot for ages, in fact I have got some photos of it with the Cab end covered over.
It's enough to make you weep looking back at all we've lost. Classic stuff, I loved the tunnels just outside Lime Street, a stygian place indeed.

the class 108 dmu at fleetwood has traveled both the liverpool and manchester and warrington to hunts cross lines in service in the 1980s
Is that the one being preserved by the Fylde group? Saw that on Nodrog I think.
@@kartwheelkarl yes it is

Absolutely Mark. Quite a line up eh?
Great era for train spotting 👍🏻 My best years where the 70s round the Manchester area 😁 Thanks for sharing Stevie.

Just for the record, the second Class 31 of the pair on that day was 31403.
Great gen Paul. Thank you.
What train was it? A Yarmouth
45136 up in diesel heaven
Along with many other locos from this collection Anne....sadly! At least some have been saved....perhaps more than we thought possible back then!
Correct 12/07/1986 Yarmouth Liverpool then Liverpool Sheffield

Did they stable electric locos for long in the tunnel area? Looks like there is a pair in the distance 86009 being one of them.
I'm not sure FWB. I wonder whether any other viewers will be able to answer that one?

86009? There was still an unmodified 86/0 in traffic then?
Absolutley Andrei. I'd have to check up as to when they were all updated.
