      Really glad you’re enjoying the collection David, and thank you for the great comment. Alan got some great footage of Peaks during his visits. Have you seen the Episodes filmed at Newcastle, Gateshead, Ashton, Miles Platting and Victoria?

    Back when things were normal! Gentle reassuring class 25 chugging away, thinking of those well padded seats on that DMU, hearing those semaphores clunking back into place.....great video

    What a wonderful exhaust note from the Class 104 towards the end!

    • @kartwheelkarl
      @kartwheelkarl  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love 104s Andrei. Without a doubt, the most characters dmus. Living in Hazel Grove, we’d often do an evening return to Buxton on a three car 104 to take night shots of the depot. (Particularly great in the snow!) The ride back, in comfy declassified first class luxury, surrounded by real wood panelling, was so cosy I never wanted to get of at HG.

    Amazing how busy the Reddish south/Denton line was even back then although this how i remember it as i walked over the long public footbridge on the right, definitely a shadow of its former self.

    • @kartwheelkarl

      I used to get the hourly shuttle there from Stockport James. It was a great place to watch trains. And I remember the long, sad line of 76 stored there after withdrawal.

    Thanks for sharing.
    Back in the 70s & 80s my money went on loco haulage and some photography. A video camera was a luxury!
    Thankfully some did get video footage.
    Is it just me that finds today's railway unrecognisable?
    Waiting on a soulless & sterile station waiting for a soulless & sterile train, at an exorbitant ticket price, being 'bullied' by pre recorded station announcements of 101 things I must not do that make you feel like a criminal!
    What happened to 'common sense!'

    Great video but such a shame to see the remains of the Woodhead being dismantled at Guide Bridge. When I began my railway career in 1975 the route was still open and very busy. All 4 platforms still in use. All history now,but at least we have excellent videos like this to show how good it was.

      I couldn't agree more Driver MG. I grew up very close to Reddish Depot where the Woodhead electrics were maintained. I remember it being a hive of activity. When I went back ten years ago, it was derelict... i think it has since been replaced with a housing estate!

    Can someone remind me why the Provincial Sector thought that stringing together three or four two-car Class 150s would make a far superior replacement for 8 coach Mk 2 formations?

    • @doncoffey5820
      @doncoffey5820 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      AndreiTupolev because they can be split up as required to be used on quiet services or short platforms economically. Locos are expensive to operate and the track access charges are higher than light multiple units.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When did they ever string together that many 150s? Don explains why stringing together multiple units is more economical; the question is why they thought that replacing an 8-coach train with a 2-to-4-coach DMU was a good idea. I used to travel between Leeds and Liverpool every couple of weeks between about 2008 and 2012 and the trains then were hellishly overcrowded.

    Was this taken from the signal box and did you know any of the Guide Bridge drivers ?

      I’m sorry David but I don’t know where Alan filmed these shots from or whether he knew any of the drivers. I’m intrigued by your question though. Were you yourself, or someone you know, working on the railway around that area at that time?

    Any ideas what the class 47 number is 🤔

    • @kartwheelkarl
      @kartwheelkarl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There were quite a few 47s in that episode Darrow, although most of them were whizzing by way too fast to stand any chance of getting the number weren’t they? Sadly, Alan didn’t keep any records of the trains he filmed so the only locos we can identify are those where the number is clearly visible. Sorry about that.

  • @Tom-Lahaye

    Were those the remains of the 1500V Woodhead catenary at Guide Bridge?

    • @kartwheelkarl
      @kartwheelkarl  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They certainly were Tom. In fact, only a couple of years earlier, there had been a line of withdrawn class 76s stored to the right of where Alan was standing. By this stage though, the 1500v DC had been switched to 25kV AC and the class 506 EMUs replaced by Class 303 and 304. The heavy duty catenary masts had be retained and rewired though.

    • @Tom-Lahaye
