      Yup. When you've seen one Pendolino, Voyager or DMU - plus the ridiculous number of 66s under the wires - you've seen 'em all. All the interest has gone!

      @@class87srule I actually like seeing an Avanti Voyager fly by. They aren't very common so seeing one is always a treat for me and feel older and more "industrial" and I prefer the livery on it more than the 390 with the silver instead of white and it's a nice break from seeing the 390 nearly every time.

    Living in SW London visiting places like Warrington were a rare treat.
    Visited there once, class 20s, 25s etc. I remember it as a busy and varied place.
    I now live in Merseyside and visited Warrington just before lockdown. Miserable now. Not one freight train in the few hours I was there. Of course the passenger trains were all boring fixed sets, gone are the days of trains of mixed period stock with various classes of traction.
    Great to see trains formations of Mk1, 2, and 3 stock in this video.
    Wish I'd made more of an effort to see various parts of the country. Did a fair bit, as time and money would allow.
    Never thought the railfreight landscape would be the way it is now. Barely any coal traffic, same with oil traffic. Gas and chemicals traffic gone. No wagon load or mixed traffic services any more.
    Thanks for recording this, at least we can still see some of the past.
    Brilliant series of films.

      Thanks Neil, and really glad you're enjoying the collection. Funny isn't it...for us NW based enthusiasts in the 80s, going down to London was a rare treat? We took all of this for granted. Boy do I miss it now!!

      Love it Ned. It's incredible the different memories this collection has brought back for different people. I suggested last week that we could release a scratch and sniff card to use whilst watching the videos, like they tried with TV a few years back to make it more immersive. We'd definitely have to have a soap factory section on there wouldn't we? Really glad you're enjoying the collection and thanks for the great comments.

    a very interesting document. But I do remember the run down state of the network,no continous welded track,and a lot of two axled coal hoppers, with an very loud sound,wenn running at speed throught Oxfort Station. On network southeast they had no mercy with the passengers, the track quality was poor, but the speeds high.This was in 1977, her Majesty `s 25 th Crown Jubilee.And Intercity 125 was the latest invention of British Rail, and all other train had to "go like hell" to give give way to those trains from London Paddington. The result was alway always a smokey Class 47 with black smoke piles of 25 meters,when starting mostly in pairs in Intercity service and a lot of engine motor failures !. Many greetings from Germany.

      InterCity was a great success. Pity John Major srewed up Britain's railways. The struggling franchise holders should return shares to tje Government for every pound of bailout money they get... gradually renationalising them

    • @kartwheelkarl
      @kartwheelkarl  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stephensmith799 looking at the UK from afar as I do these days Stephen, it would appear that there is a slow move back towards partial nationalisation, for example with east coast. Am I right in that and do you think it will become more prevalent because of the problems caused by COVID?

    • @stephensmith799
      @stephensmith799 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kartwheelkarl Yes. Renationalisation is under way. All rail franchise operators (Train Operating Companies) have ad all their revenues and expenditure taken over by the Government. This happened with almost no comment. I am not sure how shareholders are being paid but this 'interim' system will be replaced by something else that won't be 'franchising'. As you point out the East Coast Main Line is entirely public having been re- nationalised twice! Northern Rail is also entirely public. The former LSWR system which was operated first by the South West Trains and then by South Western Railway was already racking up huge deficits before the pandemic. Many franchises over estimated their traffic forecasts the bidding process having encouraged them to do so. It is an omnishambles!

    Wow,!motorail ,pretty rare to see that ,still had proper trains and carriages ,plenty of room ,and a mining industry still with us ,is that a household coal freight?

    • @kartwheelkarl
      @kartwheelkarl  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plenty of houses were still using coal for heating in the 80s Jeffrey, but much of the coal traffic around Warrington was destined for the nearby Fiddlers Ferry Power Station. Check out Alan's film on Arplley Junction for trains to and from the power station. Also, check out his film on Crewe for more Motoral footage.

      @@kartwheelkarl a lot of my past family worked down the pits ,infact my great grandfather on my mothers side was killed shaft sinking ,we had when I was young 5 fires in the house 20cwt of coal every month ,I had to fill the coal house or there was no pocket money,that was in the 60,s ,just in the process of moving and one of the pre requisites is that it’s got to have open fires ,found a bungalow iout in the sticks that fits the job !

    • @kartwheelkarl
      @kartwheelkarl  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeffreyhodge5564 Excellent Jeffrey. I reckon that new house will be very cosy. When we first moved to Australia, we had a house which used wood (mainly red river gum and blue gum) as it’s main form of heating. Very cosy but also messy and lots of work! Living in North Queensland now, we don’t have any form of heating in the house!! Plenty of cooling though. Mind you, we are close to one of the largest undeveloped high quality thermal coal seams in the world, but the public opposition to opening it up is phenomenal.
