  • So Uber once said that their drivers can make like $90k a year. They then got an absolutely massive smackdown of a fine, so thats probably not quite true. Today we dive in, and try and figure it all out. Spoiler: ITS NOT 90k.

the amazing thing about uber is someone sat down one day and went "what if i make a car ride company that charges less than taxi's, makes employees use and service their own car, and take a majority of the fare for simply existing"

A few weeks ago, I was driving a rowdy group home.. They couldn't figure out where they lived on the app so they had the most sober sit in front and guide me, but you know, they all pitched in. They regularly spoke Vietnamese and English together and expected answers from me, and I'd just laugh because it was hilarious. It wasn't a long ride. They passed me a tip when they got to where they wanted to be, but before I could look at it, one of them grabbed my face and gave me a full mouth kiss. The tip was $60. I ended my night on that note. And as funny as it is to retell, please, never feel the need to kiss your uber driver, we do accept cash.

I drove for Uber and Lyft in the Detroit metro for 6 months. I painstakingly logged all of my miles, my fuel,my expenses, etc. I trended everything through a spreadsheet which included total rides, total miles, total money received, and averaged it all out over that six-month window. At the end of six months, I still had not broke even against the expenses incurred to operate. I did it very part-time(1day/week), but before expenses I was averaging $19/hr.

my problem with uber is if your a driver and your rating drops too low, they ban you. which when you think about it, on the surface it sounds fine, but its something ridiculous, its not like "2 star drivers get banned" its something around the 4-4.5 star range. and the problem I have with this is that someone who just does the job, they drive you from point A to point B, doesnt excessively talk, or offer any extra commodities like water, maybe they let you pick the music or not maybe they pick, or maybe their is no water. they just do the job like they should, risks getting banned for not being incredibly charismatic and talking and being the most friendly person on the planet. they're still a perfect driver, but they're not good enough.

Best paid ride: A guy lived 5 minutes away, got let out of a hospital and had a voucher for a free ride. He decided he wanted to visit his friend 3 hours away. The hospital footed the bill for a $350 ish ride.
Best tip: Old lady from the airport with her rich retired friends. I think they all forgot the lady that ordered the ride tipped me... I got 4 separate tips of $80/ea.
Worst experience: A drunk girl literally shit in my car.

The median is when you line all your data up in acending or descending order and then choose the middle option. So for example 1,1,2,3,6,7,7,7,9 the Median would be 6.

Same as with uber there are peak times where you can make more money and you get a "bonus" if someone pukes in your car because you can't drive again until that's cleaned up. The money you make doesn't take into account what you spend on gas and the mileage you are quickly racking up on your car. Where I live I usually was able to average 2-3 passengers per hour if I was lucky. I was bringing in between $10 and $20 per hour before figuring my expenses. Not worth my time so I quit.

I drove for Uber when I lived in TN. When I moved to AL, I had to change insurance companies and I found out that many insurance companies will not cover you if you drive for a ride share service. I never told my old insurance company, because I never thought that it could be an issue. This is in addition to the pay concerns that you have listed (you only get paid when there are people wanting a ride), the pin not being in the right location to pick-up a rider, safety concerns, drunk customers making a mess in your car, etc. Uber is a good deal for the rider, not so much for the driver.

    Simon. 3 types of averages:
Median: in the middle, e.g. The median of the numbers 1, 5, and 49 is 5 because it's in the middle.
    Mode: most popular, e.g. the mode of 1, 5, 5, 7, 7, 7, 50 is 7 because it is most popular.
Mean: share it out or "don't be mean" as my math teacher told me, e.g. the mean of 3, 6, 82, 7, 25 is 24.6 because 3+6+82+7+25=123 then divide this by the number of numbers you have, in this example there are 5. So 123÷5 is 24.6. Hope this helps.

Finally having a reliable service to just get to the airport was a revelation. Not having to have up to $100 in cash for a cab handy in my pocket was also fabulous (or being told they could take me to an ATM as their CC reader was "broken". Taxis had a chance to be good, or even mediocre, and they failed. Not saying Uber is the best, I don't use them anymore either (Lyft is good in my city), but they have made the experience a whole lot better for most of us.

in the U.S. customers are expected to tip delivery drivers, waiters, and taxi drivers, but those are the only industries where tips are normal.
Also, Uber requires your car to be less than 10 years old, so the people who could actually use that extra income get brushed off in favor of middle-class workers who can afford a $20k car. Lyft is even worse, and requires your car to be less than 5 years old.
Minimum wage in the U.S. as of right now is $7.25 an hour, but a livable wage, even here in Texas where property is super cheap, is $15 an hour.

I recently had an uber driver take me and a mate 140kms at 1am. Cost half the price of a taxi, and the service is so much better in every aspect. Needless to say, we had plenty of time to talk. It was his main income but like most low pay jobs it's only just enough to get by (and I've never heard anything different in Australia). When he dropped us it occurred to me that the driver was now almost 2 hours away from the city, about 3 hours from home, and not likely to get any passengers driving through small towns at 3-4am. Made sure the tip (which I gave in cash and not through the app) was more than enough to cover his petrol for the return trip.

I've only used them once. My wife was supposed to pick me up from work but a blizzard happened and she refused to drive and sent me an Uber. After two drivers not showing up the third time was a charm an hour and a half later. I opened the front door cause the car wasn't exactly luxurious if you catch my drift. He was fine with it and we had a lot of banter. I asked how much he was gonna make for the trip which for him was gonna total like a fifty mile drive in blizzard conditions. He said fifteen to twenty dollars. I had no cash on me because I didn't for see the inconvenience. Needless to say, I tipped the hell out of him through the app and never used the service again as I find Uber to be parasites. Not to mention the effect they have on the cab industry who have to be licensed, registered and pay fees. But they still manage to pay people living wages. The shame. All as I can say is that lobbyism sucks.

I agree with you 💯. Taxi's also accept cash. I don't want to use credit or debit cards. So taxi's are my preferred method of transportation, if I can't drive for some reason. Uber won't accept cash. Which should be "ILLEGAL" (much like the Uber industry for reasons that you mentioned..) because cash is SUPPOSED to be an acceptable form of payment. I also don't have to worry about my cab driver being a psychopathic killer/rapist like I may have to worry about with an Uber.

I'm a truck driver, & I train new drivers. I have trained several new drivers who did uber & lift before becoming truck drivers. One of them drove for uber & Lyft in Austin Texas, he only worked Thursday, Friday, & Saturday night because it is a higher rate those nights because they are popular bar/ club nights. He said he generally worked about 36 hrs a week (3 12hr shifts) & he said he generally made 700 - 1200 $ a week only working those higher rate hrs. So he made between $18-$30 an hr minus fuel & maintance he said over the course of a year he ended up after fuel & maintance averaging $19.50 an hr. I think the only problem with your video is that most successful uber drivers do uber/ uber eats & Lyft or door dash all at the same time. All of the drivers I talked to did at minimum uber & Lyft & most also did 1 of the delivery services to, that way if their were no uber fares in their area they could find a fare on another platform. So a uber driver may average $10 a hr on uber but at the the same time they average $6 or $7 a hr on Lyft an another 2.50 on a delivery app so they are never sitting without a fare or having to drive home empty miles without getting paid. I read a pretty interesting article recently that was talking about how successful drivers using this method of working for multiple services were actually pretty successful & regularly averaging north of $20 an hr after fuel cost. So in areas with a $8.25 or 9.25 an hr minimum wage a lot of them are doubling minimum wage, which I think is great for un-skilled labour, especially with such flexible hrs. so this video only looking at what they made from uber is probably a Little flawed, because your not including the income they made from other services during those same hrs.
Anyway I love business blaze it is quickly becoming my favourite channel of yours that I know of lol, I feel like I Am subscribed to at least half of your channels so I guess that's around 33 or so now lol!

In the UK there are two types of ‘taxi’; public hire, and private hire.
Public hire are taxis you can flag down in the street and do not need advanced booking. Examples are; London black cabs and NYC yellow taxis. Their fares have a minimum fee as soon as you get in the vehicle, then are calculated based on both distance and duration. In the UK the per minute per mile rates these cabs can charge is set by local councils.
Private hire taxis can’t be hailed in the street and must be booked in advance. How far in advance (10 weeks, 10 mins, 10 secs) is irrelevant. Before the rise of Uber and smartphones, you’d book by phone or by walking into a Taxi office. In 2019 any respectable taxi firm now has an app. The fare structure for private hire is based solely on distance, and has first / subsequent mile rates. Minimum fee is the first mile rate. These rates are set by the companies themselves.
Uber bridge the two, they operate like a private hire taxi company (though they strenuously deny this), but use a public hire fare structure.
Depending on where you live in the UK, Uber may be significantly more expansive than private hire, even before taking surge pricing into consideration.

In the US, the traditional taxi is mostly falls into the public hire, including having rates set by the local taxi commission, which also limits the number of licenses granted. But unless you are at the airport or a few other tourist locations; they are unlikely to stop unless booked in advance.

In Detroit: Uber and Lyft took over the market from Taxi cabs. Because before Uber came on the scene, some Taxi cabs wouldn't even stop for some people. The last time I took a cab, the driver wanted $10 before he started driving and the meter started at $2.50.
Even driving for a Taxicab company was a RIP off, I once tried to drive a cab. They wanted me to least the cab for $70 a day, I would pay for all gas, and I wouldn't be allowed to pick up at the airport.

I drove for Uber for a bit. I did Uber Black at first, but got 0 Black calls. Changed cars and did X. The customers were mostly cool. The problems are:
    - you really need to work the odd hours shift in order to make any money. In other words, your working while your friends are out partying. Fun or money: choose 1.
    - The high demand times are rush hour times. You're only going to get 1 or 2 high demand fares because it takes you so long in traffic.
    - You're not paid for the return trip unless you get a fare. People travel in certain directions at certain times. For example, 5-6pm people are normally heading from work to home but very few are leaving home at this time. So, after dropping off a fare at home you have to drive back to the business area for the next.
I eventually moved on because the job didn't fit for me. It can be great if you don't mind split shifts. (7-8am rush hour, 5-6pm rush hour, 2am drunk hauling)

The taxis are not owned by the driver so they are not as well kept the taxis can take an enormously long time to get to you however they are indeed sometimes cheaper. I have been very happy with the Uber drivers here and you are very likely to wind up with a retired policeman as the driver. During peak times such as College reunions or New Year's Eve and big football games that cost can be prohibitive but you just have to plan around those things.
