      If this happened in the US, he would be clear in 7 year by the statute of limitations. If it happened in England, then he would still be in trouble since England has no statute of limitations for criminal offenses.

      I once drove a neighbor who I found out later was a professional shoplifter. He went through the self check-out at Walmart, and didn't scan over two-thirds of the groceries, and then paid for what he did scan with food stamps. Another time he said that he grabbed a power tool from Home Depot and was walking out the store with through the Gardening department, when an Employee said something to him. Without batting an eye, he just turned and said "don't you just hate waiting in those long lines?" and kept on walking out with the merchandise.

    Many years ago, I was doing my "single guy" shopping. Beer, cigarettes and Ramen noodles. The cashier was scanning the items and neither one of us were paying attention. I thought the final bill was a little low, but the cashier said nothing. When I got home and looked at the receipt, I realized I had gotten a $15 carton of cigarettes for 19 cents, which is what each bag of Ramen noodles cost. COMPUTER ERROR! Not my fault.

    Around thanksgiving of 2003, the bolt on the starter that held my car's starter grounding wire dropped off (just a couple of inches, but the starter was still ungrounded, so it didn't work). I went to AutoZone to pick up a new starter. Ford sucks, so the starter was easily accessed by simply removing the entire engine, and I'm not really a mechanic (I can change the oil, but a lot more than that and I need an adult). I picked up the starter, paying for the part but somehow negotiating away the need to pay a core charge.
    I got home, noticed the loose wire, secured it, then drove the part back unused and got a refund. Different employee also refunded the core charge. I informed him I hadn't paid it, but he insisted I had. All in all, I left $40 richer. When they had closed for the evening, I received a call from the manager. Seems that register was short $40 and they had me on file. I took the money back, and told the manager I informed the cashier that I didn't deserve the money because I never paid it.
    Everyone calls me dumb for not keeping it, and that's fine. Is rather be called dumb for doing the right thing than push a lot of crap that I didn't deserve.

    • @MissSpaz
      @MissSpaz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's really sweet. At one time, I was at a highschool for kids with behavioral problems, and in the school- if you were good on your "school work", they'd have you work up to four days a week. Mostly local businesses- but you were more or less free labor for them, as it was actually the school paying you, rather than the business.
      For awhile I was working at CVS. I was on cashier a lot, but since I wasn't working through corporate, I didn't have an employee ID number and had to use my co-workers. So there wasn't a record of who was at the cashier at any given time. One day I went into work and got pulled aside by the boss who said I had left the till 50 dollars short the previous day, despite the fact that I had only rung two people out for small transactions. Clearly my co-worker had either fucked up or pocketed 50$ and planned to blame it on me. It really sucked, as I already had enough stigma- having grown up in poverty, in a not so great part of town, and had gotten kicked out of mainstream highschool. I was able to keep working there, but I constantly got side eyed by my boss and a few coworkers.
      Good on you for being honest. There's a good chance you saved someone's job.

    One of the biggest price blunders in US history was the Montgomery ward “microwave blunder” back in the 70s, when $199 microwaves were sold for $1.99 due to a printing error in the Montgomery ward catalog. Although the price was obviously an error, it is illegal to advertise misleading prices to customers in most US states and company had no choice but to honor the $1.99 price until the sale ended on the date printed in the ad. As microwaves were still extremely expensive at the time (think Keurig coffee machines as a modern price equivalent ) Hundreds of thousands of customers flocked to Montgomery ward to take advantage of the super low price, costing the company tens of millions of dollars and heavily contributed to the company’s downfall a few years later.

    One topic that you can delve into is how LEGO almost went bankrupt, and how the company were able to make a remarkable recovery. Here’s a few general points:
    •LEGO hired a bunch of people that were smart, but didn’t know toy design
    •Lego’s core themes, especially Town, got neglected as they kept trying all sorts of new things. Despite being beloved, Bioncle was among these, but it actually succeeded.
    •Among all these new ideas came Galidor, widely regarded as the worst LEGO theme ever
    •When the then new CEO took over, he immediately went to work to reverse the near bankruptcy the company was facing

    The electric company handed my mom a $4,000 electric bill one time because it turned out she was paying an "estimated bill" for many months without knowing (or being told by the company) that we were using more power than the estimated bill was for. So for all those months she was paying only a portion of what the actual bill was, then was suddenly told "oh by the way you owe us $4,000, give it to us or you won't have power".
    Thankfully she was able to pay it off monthly over time, but if the bill showed what it was supposed to be in the first place we would have lowered our power usage considerably and we wouldn't have had the issue to begin with.

    Another Aussie received a huge deposit when a bank employee entered the BSB and account number in the wrong field - he also contacted them, got laughed at and ended up contacting the media to get the bank to take him seriously.
    Also "Theft by finding" - if you find a large sum of money you're meant to report it or could technically be charged with theft if the police find out it was you. Assuming the person who lost it filed a report and they can prove that's the money you found

    Many years ago I worked as a checkout attendant in a large village supermarket.
    Was on the early morning shift and an old lady bought a pastie which scanned at £1,700. She was a little surprised by this (as was I).
    They had reset some price codes overnight and this caused the error in the only 2 pasties on sale next morning.

    In the 1970s, an energy company in Melbourne, AU, started using computers to do the billing; they were overconfident in their system (or their employees' ability to use it) and abandoned manual billing / checking too soon.
    A customer received one of the new computer-generated bills - for $0.00. Deciding to make a point, he sent the company a cheque for $0.00. When that amount was entered into the system, mayhem ensued: the computer system crashed and it took days to reprogram it so that it could deal with the amount of $0.00.

    A friend of mine was once the 'victim' of a software glitch involving the company's time clock. He normally worked 30 hours per week but one week the time clock said that he clocked in on a Wednesday and didn't clock out again - at all that week. The automated system credited him with, and paid him for, over 90 hours that week.
    He said nothing and the company never caught it.

    Back when I worked as a cashier at a military commissary, one of our customers came to the store with a receipt showing that she'd paid $78.78 for a jar of hot fudge topping that should have been 78 cents. It was easy to see what happened - the person entering the prices into the computer stuttered on the keys. I once mistakenly rang up some cans of cat food as 50-pound bags of dog food, which resulted in a charge of more than $200.

      @stefanmuntean5289 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not Asian but i generally know how much things cost, so if the price seems to high or to low i check recipe. Several times i spotted errors, surprisingly most were in my favor and being a honest person would inform the cashier about them to correct, i do not leave the que before i verify, if i suspect something is wrong, because if you do they won't correct any errors that are in theire favor (is the law in my country and you need to do a scene to management and they can just say no)

    There was a story from about 10 years ago about a petrol station in Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK which, during a row about fuel pricing, in which a litre of fuel was being sold at 33p! Cue long queues as locals got to hear about the cheap petrol! However, it turned out that the price was a mistake, as the wrong price had been entered! As soon as the error was reported to the petrol station management, it was halted.

    I always check that the specials are charged correctly. More than once I've gotten to the till and they haven't changed the prices. Another thing I do is, if something is labeled on special I take a photo of the tag on the shelf. This stops another practice I've encountered. It comes up at full price at the till and when you point this out, they send someone to go look to see if the price is right, they remove the tag, claiming it isn't on special anymore and that there was no tag, or that there is a tag, but it was for a different product or brand.
    Which also brings me to another issue. Putting the tag for the wrong brand under something that is not on sale. Or if it is something like shampoos, they put it under the conditioners instead. So you land up getting the wrong item. This causes issues big time.

    2 years ago, our monthly water bill came through as (South African) R330 633 (About $22 400). Our bill is usually about R600, so this was about 550 months, all charged in one bill. Long story short, it took us 11 months to sort out, during which they threatened to take our house to cover the bill (paid off and worh R1.2m, about $80 000), even though they admitted they had not actually taken a water reading from the meter in 6+ years! In the end, we got the account written off, R3600 credit and a new water meter at their expense, so we could try again.
    We now take a photo of the reading monthly and take it to them, to work out the bill. We are also down to average R450 a month and they still have not come out to check!

    They're often called "Townhouses" in the U.S. for anyone curious. But townhouses does technically mean it has to have multiple floors.
    Edit : this isnt true about the multiple floors and in the replies we have figured out that people are split between rowhomes and townhouses.

    • @SquishySenpai
      @SquishySenpai 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Townhouses don't *have* to have extra floors. They just have to be connected together by a shared wall. I've been in some in where they were extra deep instead of having a second or third floor. In some areas they're also known as "Row houses"

    Most memorable one is mispriced shot glasses. Big chain liquor store put 2 flats of 100 shot glasses on clearance but blundered and listed it as $0.10 instead of $1.00 each. I bought 10 and kindly pointed out the obvious mistake to the clerk, who then proceeded to try and charge me the $1/ea. I pointed that WI laws state you have to give it for the cheaper price and he was only losing $9 on my purchase. He still acted angry that I wouldn't let him charge the higher price, and I told him I'd just buy all 200 (cuz for me it'd be $20, big deal); he stared at me like I was joking as he was scanning some other goods, and I told him 1 sec while I grab a soda.....
    Came back with both flats and said I was going to purchase these. The guy has always given me 'that look' ever since whenever I shop there. lol
