  • Okay, so a few years back Starbucks through it would be a great idea to ask people who were getting coffee how racist they were. It was weird. This is that story. It's pretty f-ing cringe.

There are two things I would like to suggest to use Simon the first is the accepted usage of BCE and CE have replaced no longer are the designations of BC and AD acceptable historically. Then I must correct your Italian on Leonardo DaVinci and the Medici in Italian a c followed by an i is pronounced see and not see. Everytime I hear that Italian mispronunciation it simply grates on my nerves. Please correct these two things and I will be a very happy camper. Most sincerely, Stephen Valentino

@@stephenvalentino7497 are so saying it's Med-EE-see rather than Med-EE-chee or the other way? You accidentally wrote "see not see". I'm pretty sure I've heard him pronounce it both ways. I notice that his use of AD/BC and CE/BCE has a lot to do with the author of the article. Some channels he does it one way and other channels he does the other.

These questions seem so racist. I mean, when I hang out with someone of a different race, I don't make a mental note of it. Does Starbucks think people are so concerned about race that it sticks out when they meet someone of a different race? When trying to answer these questions in my head, it took me a solid 2 minutes to remember that one of my best friends is Asian. I just think about his race so little that I don't even notice it.

The real reason behind this madness is super simple, and even more embarassing than anything that was talked about it: it just shows the complete disconnect a rich CEO and whatnot have with their costumers. These people live in such an opaque bubble these days that what goes on in a common citizen's head makes absolutely no sense to them. You can see this in action when you hear people like Zuckerberg and others talk. There are exceptions of course, but you bet that there are some people in this world who have absolutely never experienced anything close to a "commoner's" everyday life to the point he or she might as well be an alien lifeform instead, it'd make no difference.

I see myself in two different szenarios if I were to be asked that question in a coffee shop.
Number 1: I'm in a good mood, it's warm and sunny and I look forward to something nice and want a nice coffee to kill some time.
I either politely or bluntly state that I have no facebook account, I choose my friends based on their character and/or that's none of their business.
Number 2: I'm in a bad mood, it's early in the morning, my coffemaker broke and I'm already annoyed by the unnatural chirpiness of the people around me at this ungodly hour.
I answer: "I have no facebook account and even if I had one, it would be none of your flippin' business who my friends are, so hand me my goddamn coffee or I'll rip out your spine and beat you to death with it."

Oh yeah! That was a thing. Honestly I agree. I can't imagine worse place, than in the Starbucks during morning crowding (or siege of the baristas) and no worse person, than college student, who gets minimum wage and has to get up at 5AM to get to work on time, to have this conversation with around complete caffeine addicted strangers, who can't think rationally until they get their morning dose.
p.s. Nice maps on the walls, especially the bottom one.

  • @thefatherrabbit
    @thefatherrabbit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

That must have been really uncomfortable for the baristas as well. I imagine they had to have known that some customers would respond in a hostile manner. Starbucks put their employees in a bad position where confrontation was inevitable. Bad idea. Even worse execution.

I worked for Starbuck's for 10 years and this was one of the more boneheaded things they pulled. If a customer just looked at the staff of any particular Starbuck's they'd get the message. But Howie, true to form, turns a company philosophy of being kind to others into a way to turn even more of a profit.

I was on a Starbucks kick when they did this and my go to reply was "who pays attention to what race ur friends are colleges r in this day u racist". I always said it in a mockingly kind voice and noticed they didn't ask it again for a while after. I know it was a little mean but after about the 20th time I was asked i was annoyed when all i wanted was coffee. And at $5 for coffee it was a unwelcome idea to ask stuff like that.

A study just came out detailing how this virtue signaling bollocks they did correlated with a decline in clientele.
It's also worth noting that these questions you mentioned are essentially the same as faux social justice initiatives like affirmative action. Maybe well intentioned, but effectively racist in practice. Similarly, questions of the same vein are on federal forms of all types, notably in regards to civil rights. For example, background checks for firearms. This makes a de facto registry of how many people of each race (so long as it's one of 6 races they choose) initiate firearm transfers and thus background checks

One of my nieces asked me a similar question several years ago. Granted, she was 4 or 5, and my roommate was the first Black person she'd ever seen besides her uncle (her city is now down to 88% white). I told her I wasn't gonna go onto my Facebook or through my phone to count my non-white friends. "Why?" "Because I don't give a crap what they are unless someone is giving them crap for it. Got better things to do, like didn't you want ice cream kid?"

  • @AustynSN

This does remind me of a funny story from a place I worked. One of my coworkers and I were joking around and he sarcastically (but in a friendly not angry way) commented that "Yeah, yeah... I'm sure, you've 'got black friends'..." (BTW, I'm white, he's black)
I gave him a thoughtful look for a moment and responded "No, I don't have any black friends."
He suddenly gave me a look of complete disbelief and shock.
"What?!" I responded, "I don't have any white friends either. I'm a complete loser. I don't have ANY friends."
I've never seen a coworker laugh that hard.
