In the UK, the BBC makes you pay a fee yearly (something like $100 AUD) if you have a TV with access to BBC Channels, which all TVs sold in the UK do by default.
You're not obliged to, but the BBC like to harass you alot if they don't see any license fees being paid from your address.
They can't exactly do anything about it so they scare people into paying, in the 50s they claimed they had these high-tech vans that could detect what room you're watching the TV in and what you're watching.
There's videos about it all over youtube, search "BBC TV License Van"

Daniel Kohli as a fellow American they bother me so much. Especially when you see a drug ad right after a lawsuit ad for another drug. I know Google & WebMD are every doctors least favorite invention already. “Do not confuse my medicine degree with your google search” is a sign in a doctors office. Now they have patients coming in saying “is Otesla right for me?” I refuse to take any medication advertised on tv.

there ARE actually state and federal fees at the bottom of your satellite or cable bill that are essentially the same type of fees as a TV license. these rates fluctuate and annually probably amount to $150. source: worked for AT&T, people don't read or understand their bill.

    • @noth606

crazykids666999666 You could look this up easily but in many European countries the government runs its own "unbiased" TV and radio stations that typically do not have commercials. They have cultural programs and stuff in foreign languages to pander to immigrants and mostly stuff no one would pay for voluntary, so the government does what they always do, they force you to pay for it anyway. In other words if you own a radio and/or a TV set they charge you usually between $50-170 per year to fund the garbage you aren't watching or listening to, but you have to register to pay. Since no one would do this voluntarily, they have inspectors going from door to door visiting houses that do not pay for said license and if they find a TV and/or radio, they give you a fine and register you so you will get the bill next year.

When I lived in the UK the TV license was 90 pounds for a black and white tv and 100 pounds for a color tv. This was in the mid 80's. Now being a US service member stationed there, some members brought their TVs from home to watch VHS tapes they bought at the base exchange. US TVs (NTSC) will not play UK broadcasts (PAL) but the TV patrol stopped at their house and fined them for not having a license for the NTSC only TV. The BBC sucks for this. If it was a multi system TV, like what I had, I can expect this, but for a single system TV not compatible with BBC broadcast, that is just theft.

I am a bit late but small extra detail about the VW thing is that after they got exposed they did a software update that potentially could destroy the car. Sadly I was the proud owner of a VW passat that exactly did that. I was on a road trip through sweden to the Netherlands when in the middle of nowhere my car slowed down to about 25kmmph and refused to go faster or drive longer than 5 minutes at a time. meaning I couldn't even limp of the highway or to the nearest village.
it turned out that VW had two different options, either recall my VW and give me a new car or money back, or to try and get the car to actually reach the emissions standard they claimed it was driving at. they chose the second option and with the new software update my car was using the Filter system in the engine 20 times more than recommend in order to get to this standard.
The filter got full and broke, causing my engine to choke itself and fill with diesel. It turned into a 2400 euro repair bill for the engine and a ruined vacation since I was stuck in Sweden for 3 days causing me to miss my boat ride to Germany and so also missing my appointments I had made. After getting home I had to make roughly 40 phone calls and a few less than friendly visits to my local VW dealer to get my 2400 euros back for the repair. And after all of that I was stuck with a car that I didn't trust and of which its value had dropped to about half.

    Here's the thing with Android.
'Android', in reference to a touchscreen operating system, is a trademarked brand owned by Google.
The source code licensed under the GPL. This means that everybody is free to take a copy of the source code and modify, give it away, or sell it as they choose, and the person who receives it from them has the same rights. You can also do this to the OS installed on your own phone or tablet, and you are entitled to decompile the kernel and OS binaries to modify them as you wish. The only restriction is that, because 'Android' is trademarked, you can't call your new version 'Android'.
So what Google were doing was decreeing that if anyone wanted to sell the official version which was called 'Android', they would not be allowed to also make their own versions. This is actually legal, since they can impose whatever terms they like when licensing the brand, but is a dick move.

The difference between a real store promoting their own brands first without telling you and search engines doing it without telling you is that you can always just walk over to a different store, but what are you going to do, build your own search engine? If every search engine is allowed to do this, effectively there is no longer any unbiased access to the online shopping. It's like if you wanted to walk over to another store because you didn't like the practices of the first one, but the only way to get to other stores as to ask the owner of the first store for directions.

The thing about Google is that people have to pay them to be included in top results, or even on say, the first page of results. The statistics are that almost no one is going past the first page on your average search, so it's not just a search engine, it's also a service. In the world of commerce and business, you can't be giving yourself an unfair advantage like that even if it is your own platform, because it defeats the purpose of being a search engine and is then just another marketing tool. Amazon is even worse.

Simon gives feedback to Danny through the reading, Sam comments on what Simon does through the editing, and Danny just send scripts off into the ether and hopes it doesn't land Simon in a massive law suit.

TV tax. I was blown away by that upon arrival to England. Thankfully, I was American military and got a voucher so I didn't have to pay. But I remember the stories of the tv van. I was so impressed that the British economy was in such good shape that driving around to check for TVs was feasible. Things may be different now or they may have been trying to get over on us Americans, but in 2013 we were told that you had to pay the tax for all TVs you own, whether or not you watched TV or if the tv even worked. But that's just my experience, and I'm sure it was exaggerated for us.

Not an expert, but I believe you pay it per household. So if you have some pimp my house situation going on and have TVs in your TVs, then its all covered under one licence. And also if you don't watch TV (and just Netflix, or play Xbox), then you're all good (I think, not a lawyer blah blah blah)

How does the government justify charging a fee for something they are in no way involved with? If I'm watching a TH-cam video, on my phone, delivered to me by my cell phone service provider, by what right would the government demand the equivalent of a few hundred dollars for me using my own electronics? As for google, I want people to keep two things in mind:
It involved Anti-trust laws, which are intended to prevent the weaponized monopolies of periods past.
Please watch Simon's biography channels on people whom made a fortune destroying competitors with monopolies. Some of the tactics involved where so disgusting, such as running a loss knowing the smaller businesses can not follow suit... and after they are gone, up goes the price. These where not nice people, some where enigmas and sort of gray areas but a lot where just down right ********* and it is good these types are regulated when it comes to the global economy.
Most people don't click off the first page of a search engine.
This is very important in this case, for it explains even those erroneous results for things that are semi-related but would never be purchased at all. Each item would knock the competitors further down the list, and further off that front page of search results to obscurity. This would give google the same effect as having a 'closed storefront' while *tricking people into thinking it is displaying competitors items* for that sweet traffic boost. A closed storefront showing only a single companies items is one thing, but a search engine boosting that it shows everyone's while 'fudging things' is another.

If the fine was based on the fact that they were saying that they were displaying things equally but weren't, that makes sense to me.

    • @lostbutfreesoul
      @lostbutfreesoul 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brainblaze6526 ,
The news reports I find simply state the amount of the fine and the fact they where manipulating search results. As I lack a research team to fine comb things any further, or the desire to search for court documents, it is up to others to determine exactly what the reasoning was. I was just putting forth how Alphabet could have easily used their position to 'stealth black-list' competitors without informing those using the search function that it was occurring. As google has a reputation so strong that 'google it' is a legitimate term, it is possible to see why a regulatory board would be upset with this sort of deception.
Billions though... that is more a sign of the times, where numbers like that even exist....

  • @SplotchTheCatThing
    @SplotchTheCatThing 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Can't quite believe I'm saying this, but honestly I agree with Simon on the whole Google thing... it's their search engine and if they want to ruin it for everyone else that's their business.
As it is, I remember when those ads would show up on google searches and, yeah, it was a little bit annoying, but I could work around it, and I don't think "a little bit annoying" is worth two and a half billion dollars...
Maybe there's something I'm not seeing. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if some folks weren't tech-savvy enough to work around the annoyance that well, but I still can't imagine that they'd have no other option but to buy from Google when they didn't want to.

technically speaking, android is open source, anyone can view the source files, make their own version of android, so on. google doesn't make any money off of android. the way google makes money is from their services (eg. google play store) and, more importantly, tracking software on your phone. the issue was that while android was free to use for everyone, google said that if you wanted apps on your version of android, you have to make chrome and their search engine the default (as well as obviously preinstall them, quite obviously)

    YES! AGREED!Companies are NOT PEOPLE!!!
(yet in the U.S., they are, by certain really shitty definitions)
YES! AGREED! Companies DO need to be regulated to ensure they are good corporate citizens, JUST LIKE ACTUAL PEOPLE, FREE PEOPLE, ARE REGULATED WITH LAWS AND RESPONSIBILITIES!
I DISAGREE, on one point, when you say corporations are ONLY about profits, and just DON'T ever choose to do the right thing. Some companies do have some higher motivations, as every company's policies, standards, behaviors, employee expectations, statements, and actions, are 100% controlled by, and actively chosen by, the people, the human beings, that are directing the company in everything it does. Companies are not monolithic automaton s that just go forward doing what they f****** want and the people are just along for a little ride hoping to make a few bucks. Every company is a collection of people and their collective choices of words, and actions. Any company can have whatever set of priorities the people controlling the company decide it should have. Saying every company is just all about profits purely and nothing else absolves the people who run the company from any and all responsibility in their actual responsibilities to not make Society, the planet, or people working for them, or the people and places around them into something toxic, something horrible, or something dead.
Otherwise, a bloody right entertaining bit of content, lads!

For the google stuff, I really think the right way forward, legislation wise, is require there to be a version that is not anti-competitive. But it need not be the only version on the market, just not in any way functionally inferior to other versions, which can be as anti-competitive as they'd like, on the market. It can, however, charge a fee over the free alternatives.
There is no such thing as a free lunch. Quite frankly, a lot of the fines in those market dominance case is essentially saying "we want your free stuff with no strings attached". That's never gonna happen, so there's gonna be strings attached, which when found, boom, fine. The problem is, with the way the current laws are, even if they made a paid version with no strings attached alongside their string attached free ones, as long as the free one is market dominant, they would still get fined. So it'd be useless to try.
Sometimes I feel the government intentionally leave things vague and not make better laws in those matters just so that they can have a recurring revenue stream from large companies that are likely to become market dominant one way or another by happenstance. They won't try nearly as hard if instead of fines, the money are to returned to consumers somehow or are made to donate to charities. Mind, I'm not saying companies dominating markets are good, just that governments almost certainly does not have the purest intentions.
