- Ali explains his tips and techniques on how to catch bluefin tuna off the coast of San Diego. He explains the recommended gear, lures, rods, reels when targeting bluefin tuna. Ali states , "We have not seen these many bluefin tuna for more than 100 years.." Either fishing from a charter boat or private boat, try these recommended techniques.

I went on a trip 15 years ago on the old Holiday out of SD and did get laughed at when I pulled out my Penn 9500 spinner outfit. I got the last laugh though with a #75 BFT that won the jackpot.

@@peterk814 its actually both an ad, and a recommendation. They tell you what reels they use. You can then find a comparable reel that you want to use. They also tell you rod recommendations in ratings. Now you can go and find a rod in whatever rating you like.
They said 40lb flouro on 65lb braid.
For spinning use 80lb braid or 100lb braid to 80 or 100lb mono.
Hook sizes are also in the 1/O to 3/O range.
Listen to Ali talk, and ignore the brands if that makes you feel better.

Loving these segments. It really gets people to understand that it is not always a 1 rod and reel situation. Different rods and reels for different fish, along with different hooks for different bait.
The one thing I would like to see is how you actually setup your leader for different situations. Such as going from bait to a lure. Lets say the fathom has 40lb on and you notice you need 30lb cause the fish are being picky, how do you attach your new leader to your braid on the boat. Also knots that you guys prefer. For live bait, lures, or an overall knot.

Ohhhh man.....i am just starting to get into fishing. I have never fished for tuna or any big game, always into small stuff but I got here on TH-cam to view on how to start getting equipped with tuna fishing. Starting with reels, rods, lures..etc...i don't own anything so I was looking to see what advice to follow. Local knowledge is by FAR the best, most informative videos that i have seen thus far over weeks of seeing videos here. Like I said, I would need help to equip myself and would definetly follow your advice. Your videos are great and the description into every single item that you show is fantastic. Thanks for the sub! We've been using the Phenix 9'ers for the last few years and really like them.
Great insight here. One adjustment I’d make is to not go full braid to flouro. My bite ratio increased when using braid as backing and going with 100yrd top shot of 40lb co polymer then flouro. Tight lines.
To each his own. We like the short top shot. It lets the bait swim with less resistance. If you're confident with your set up, stick with it!

Newport Landing/Davey's Locker captains out of Newport Beach won't even bother stopping on foamers of microbait because the captains think the sportfish won't bite anything else.
We drove directly over a bait ball 40' wide and I thought the boat was going to sink from lack of water beneath us. The wild, micro bait fish were anchovies I believe that were about 1.5" long.
It's a gift and a curse.

Depends on the size of the gear. We use about 30% of the lines breaking strength. So with 60# braid we woudl use about 20# of drag. Good luck.

We usually use 3x hooks whenever we can. When the fish get picky, we scale down hook weight, size and leader weight. Thanks
Love the videos! Maybe do one on electronics! I see a lot of these big sports boats have nasa like electronics like fueron fish sonar as you know its not your standard fishing finder. What is something similar that Simard has? Because fueron fish sonar is waaaaaayyyy to expensive.

Usually a short wind on about 30' long and 200-300'.
Hope you see this but would you recommend a larger baitcaster versus a spinning setup if washed well afterward? Seen guys in videos using a similar rig I would using a jig in heavy cover for largemouth.
Heavy cover fishing for Large Mouth is best done with a baitcaster, IMO. Check out the Revo line. They make some great stuff.

Any additional ad ice for a newer tuna dude. I just moved back to so ca. and I’m amazed at what y’all are catching out here. You used to have to go on 10-30 day trips to catch the big 200-300 lbs blue fin. 3-5 day trip to catch 80-150 lbs yellow fin. I’m hearing y’all catching on over nights and day and a half or 1.75 day trips. I’m a big bass (fresh water) guy. But I’m really wanting to get into salt. Back in the 90’s I did a 3 day to Guadalupe Island caught a 100+ lbs yellow fin and won thats days and that trips jackpot. That was how far south I remember you had to at least go before really getting into good tuna. I’m blown away. So amazing.
My advice is GO NOW. This is the best fishing in recorded history. Rent a rig or two from the landing and get out and enjoy this insane fishing!

For the 40NLD set up I can’t find the Penn Carnage rod or the Penn Ally rod you recommended on another video. Any other recommendations for a rod to match the 40NLD reel setup?
Everything is out of stock everywhere right now. I'd suggest something in the 60-100# range and about 7' long. Go pull on a few at your favorite tackle store.
Hey Ali, thanks for the video. I am in the market for a spin setup. The first one I bought was a daiwa combo that I couldn't cast at all as it was too stiff. I like the Penn price point since I will not use it as much as bait. What rod do you have on the 5500 and 65# spec? saludos

We use the 30-80# 7' carnage rods as our go to spinning set up for local. For big bluefin you'll need something heavier but this set up will catch everything else.

I’m looking to get a lefty reel for big fish 80-130 rod. Do you think the penn fathom 30 will get the job done? Unfortunately they don’t make a lefty fathom 40nld. And there are very few big game lefty reels.
That's a little light. For a big Lefty reel you'll have to talk to the folks at Accurate reels.

Thanks for the video. I booked a trip on the New Lo-An for this coming May. It’s an 2 night trip. I do not have any tuna fishing gear. Would I be okay using rental gear or should I pick some up? I notice a lot of people on these charters have multiple rods. Which ones are the most crucial when it comes to blue fin. I don’t want to be under prepared but I also don’t want to spend a ton of money buying gear I’ll use once a year. Do you have any recommendations?Thanks
I'd go with rental stuff. You're gonna really need just 2-3 set ups depending on what the fish are doing. I'd just go with what the shop tells you and rent. Then figure out what you like and really need before the next trip.

Hi, Ali, what model rod do you have paired to that Slammer III spinning reel?
We pair them with Carnage II rods. Just match the rod size to reel size and leader weight you plan on using. Always go up one size in rods as they are a little underrated.
what I would like to see for content is tips for maintaining the bluefin in the freezer for as long as possible as sashimi grade fish. I just learned that Bluefin once frozen should be kept at about the same temp as the covid vaxes. Maybe there will be a surplus of freezers available? Even on my coldest setting, my professionally processed fish only lasts about 6 to 8 months tops where it has that beautiful just frozen color.
That's about all you can expect from a tuna fillet without a cryo freezer. The meat will break down if you can't get the temps into the -50f range.
Going out Saturday.. I have a tranx 500 and Calcutta 700b, I'm hoping that'll do the job for these 40-60lbs tuna

The Penn Carnage MODEL # CARBWII50100S70 Is a good match for that reel for bigger local tuna.
I'm considering getting the penn slammer III 9500 or 10500. Which rod would you recommend? I'm planning on spooling it with 80lb. braid for tuna fishing.
Penn makes couple of longer Carnage 2 popping rods. Those woudl be a great start. You can also probably use a smaller reeels. We use 7500 size for 100# fish.

Carnage 2's work great as an all around rod.
Don't be so salty. Look up slick butt. Very common on big game rods. We can fish whatever brand we want. We CHOOSE PENN for durability and value.

A PENN Fathom or Torque Lever Drag would be perfect for that style of fishing. Either a 25 or 30 size. Match this up with a Penn Carnage Rod and you are good to go. Good Luck!

For cheaper charters, That go no further than san clemente or just a 1 day charter do you recommend the 25n or the 40n? Also are the conventional reels limited to just live bait or will i be able to throw lures? If so which type of lures?
The type of trip doesn't' really matter. These three set ups cover lures and bait fishing. The conventionals will throw lures, but not as far or efficiently as the dedicated popper set up. We like the nomad madscad, riptides and chug norris' for bluefin lures.
Great setup. Except I use a Shimano 50 LRSW. It's an pretty pricy reel but you can use more line and makes the fighting alot easier. I do have a couple penn reels but but the 6/0 and 9/0. Great video tho.

I'd budget about $1000. Stick to the Fathom reels and Carnage rods. You can't go wrong.
Curious as to if you guys have tried out the Buffalo slow pitch jig by Nomad, I know they are one of the show sponsors and you guys seem to be pretty keen on their tackle. They remind me a lot of a Butterfly Jig was wondering if you had a chance to give them a shot.
Yes sir. We have been using them for bluefin, yellowfin and bottom fish on both coasts. They get bit and the rigging and finish is first class!

Really hard to say. Depends on a lot of factors but that should handle medium size fish in the 80-150# class.

Really depends on the size of fish and type of lure. For casting 7'6" t0 8'. For jigging 5'6" to 6'6". You really want to match the rod to the size of fish your are pursuing so there is not a one size fits all solution. Hope this helps.

what size and strength hook would you recommend for a sinker rig? especially if there are 100-200lbers out there?
We have been using the VMC Nemesis in a 2/0 - 4/0 this season with great results. Match the hook to the size of the bait.

The rod might be a little light but you should be good for fish up to 100# or so. Good luck.

Hey I have a penn fathom 30ld narrow well the same ones you got but mines a 30, with a penn carnage 2 jigging rod it’s goes from 5-8oz , what can I use it for bait fishing to is the setup good ?
It will work for sure. I'd recommend a non jigging rod for baitfishing like a Carnage 2 40-80# rod. It will have a more firm action and make pulling in those big fish easier.

What you think of the shimano speed master 2 20 model
Haven't fished them but Shimano makes great gear.
Right now bluefin mixed with yellowfin 25 miles out of San Diego are only biting 20lb fluorocarbon leader nothing bigger. Really really hard to put them on the boat right now.
This is correct. With this finesse style fishing you're going to have a high rate of casualties. It's just part of the game.
Great video! Those BFT are some picky bastards, 40lb leader was the key to getting bit but took almost 1hr to land an 80-100lb with 2 speed lever drags.

Is a 15 size reel like the Squall or Fathom loaded with about 300 yards of 50 lb braid and a 30 lb fluoride leader in a 30-60 rated rod too light for flylining and surface irons to tuna?
Not too light but too small of a spool to make iron swim well. You'll have to crank really fast. The 25N is one of the best surface iron reels ever. Pick one up when you can.

Trying to gear up for the upcoming Tuna season. I noticed the fathoms in the video here are single speed. Is the 2 speed a better option?
The second speed is nice to have if you have a few extra bucks. We don't use it a lot but it's nice to have when you get a stubborn fish hung up under the boat. Typically we fight them in high gear in case the fish charges the boat. We want to be able to keep up and keep the line tight.

Is the reason to use flouro /mono leader because of abrasive teeth or because of line shy fish? I always thought it was shock absorber.
Both and more . It does provide some shock abortion and prevents bite off but more importantly it gets more bites. The short top shot allows your bait to swim better and more natural.

Just get a good rod tube. We like the Plano airliner model. Then pack your reels in your luggage. Good to go.
