I’ve had quite a few requests for something like this for a long time! Glad I was able to finally get something out though, hopefully these tips help you out for your trip
love ya work mate congrats on the killer tuna caught here in australia we catch them off the rocks hectic rock fishing but none the less affective Great way you fish for them in the US Tight Lines mate keep posting and ill keep watching
Much appreciated man, thank you for the kind feedback. You guys do much kingfish off the rocks out there too? That’s something I wanna do so bad! Yellowtail is my favorite fish to target in the world
@DirtyHookers Great post! You haven't hit triple digits; I have yet to land a YFT or BFT!!! I would like to change that soon!!! Thanks again for the post!!!
Ive been told the clear popper gets hit because they see a silhouette of something but not quite sure what it is that’s splashing so its more reactionary
mono may come off the reel easier, but it creates more drag in the water. Braid has a thinner diameter and it's easier for the fish to pull through the water. Line diameter is a very important factor in fly lin fishing.
I agree, line diameter definitely does play a big roll, but I’ve always seen better result personally with having a good length top shot of mono over straight braid. 50 yards seems to be that sweet spot for me, the rest is braid
For poppers the shinano Tranx 500 i think is small, the drag and line capacity is not sufficient. I have a Lexa 400 similar, and i take tunas more than 100 pounds and the fight is very long and last year in Panama the lexa broke when was fight with tuna more than 140 lbs, i have photos, i get take off change lexa for Saragossa 20K, but bring the fish was very luck day. I love conventional reels, but i dont know how conventional reel is sufficient to catch a big tuna with popper. for live bait i buy a Fathon 40 two speed i waiting the reel arrives. Thanks your video.
Spinning reels are definitely the most ideal for popper fishing. I think if I were to fish a baitcaster for poppers, it would be the tranx 500, but a lot of our foamer fish out here are above 100lbs and I really don’t wanna fish triple digit fish on a bait caster lol so that’s why I fish conventional
@@Dirty.Hookers Dear Friend and Avex model HX 5/2 Raptor With MC cas is not possibele to cast poppers and to cast long distances? I love conventional reels, anda i search a perfecctreel to fish tuna, here in Brasil does not have Avet dealers. I never tried it.
@@Dirty.Hookers ok, but i think if you catch a 200 pounds tuna, the tranx is not enouth or the fight will be more than 3 hours, with me at Daixa Lexa 400 mote than 5 times pass that 3 hours. The Avet reel can be possible? I want to buy this reel what you think about it?
@@leonardlucioscordeirokusdr5119 yeah it’s possible the tranx 500 will take as long as the lexa. I don’t know a whole lot about Avet reels, I think it’s the raptor that comes with cast control. If so, you should be okay. We fish in Southern California, United States. And out here we cast conventional gear with poppers, stickbaits, and surface irons. It just takes a lot of practice.
When the popper is clear they only see the 3-4 beads from below. You get to fish a full size popper with a smaller presentation. That’s just what I think 🤷🏼
Definitely a good theory! My buddy was saying maybe all they can see is the hooks and from below it might look like small flashing chovies, so similar theory, but I think the beads might be a little more on to something
Nice video man. Nice overview. Good info and great recommendations. Agree with your recommendation on a rod rated 30-80 for surface irons or poppers with that Tranx. Great video for people to understand the different scenarios and different weight set ups. I'm deciding on a 100 lb reel for a Seeker OSP 2×4. I like that Talica 25 II. What do you think?
@@hooks4nooks hell yeah! Hope you like it. The new saltiga lever drag is pretty nice too, and comes with a tbar handle, but it’s like $150 more than the talica
RP knot for both braid to mono and braid to fluoro. And mono to flouro, I either tie the Uni to uni or surgeons knot th-cam.com/video/YGLFn8lPMu0/w-d-xo.html
Had another question: which rod would you recommend pairing with a Talica 25 as a 100-lb setup (sinker rig/ jigs)? Would the axis 780X2H, 40-100 work? 😅
That will work just fine. I have mine paired with a Phenix Black Diamond hybrid 80-130, but the Axis 720X2H or X3H would also be perfect pair ups for Talica 25
This was specifically for like sport boat trips. Tady C is definitely my go to for foamer fishing, but there aren’t a lot of sport boats that run and gun foamers
@@Dirty.Hookers Bro, I got a suggestion for a video. One Rod & Reel to Rule 'em All. Suppose you can bring only 1 rod / reel combo. You are going offshore fishing on long-range boat. What would you bring? What line? Avet MXL Raptor MC w/ 65 lbs. braid + Phoenix Axis or Seeker Ulua ? Think about -- if could only bring one rod & reel, knowing that you might be catching 10 - 20 lbs. yellow tail, bluefin 40 lbs., and potential for 100 - 300 lbs, live bait, casting surface iron, and jigging -- what would you choose ?
@@jamesgreenbaum5729 that wouldn’t quite be possible to narrow it down to 1 rod if you have the shot at running into all of those fish in the same trip. Big bft alone need their own 100# set up, and you wouldn’t be able to fly line with a rail rod for yellowtail or schoolie tuna. I do like the idea behind it, but it would be too difficult to narrow down multiple species to 1 set up
All depends on the size of the reel. If you take a reel in to get spooled up at your local tackle shop, tell them you want enough room left for a casting top shot (50-80+ yards, up to you how much mono you want) and they’ll take care of it.
The 2 brands that I think people have been buying most of over the last 2 years are Feed clear poppers and Clear Choice also in clear/ghost. But really any clear popper should work just fine
This video has long been awaited! Thank you Ray

Yeah owner hooks do run a little big, but still great hook though!
And thank you man I really appreciate it

Sorry, just seeing this. I will try my best to remember to do that from here on!
just love it .great tutorial

Rig a Bonita splasher on 200 floro and crimp both ends. Trail a big blue and white feather 6/0 or larger. Boom
Never heard of a Bonita splasher, is this for trolling?

@Blueskies you’ll still be fine with 50ft. You’ll still have a decent amount of stretch with that amount of mono. You’ll be okay

Really can’t go wrong with the Talica 25, only down fall is it doesn’t come with a tbar handle, so you’ll have to upgrade the handle for the 25.

Yeah 60 lb main line. Or if you have heavier braid and a flatfall rigged with a leader already on it, you can tie the braid straight to the swivel.
Thanks!!!

If all depends on who you go to. All rod wrappers have their own prices, but if I had to guess probably $150-$200.
