Online multiplayer is fun, and I appreciate it -- however I became a gamer because of the fun found in split-screen and couch co-op games. I still make an effort to get friends over, and play older games as we lament how our newer, next gen games don't allow us to play together when hanging out. Thank God for the switch at least.
The biggest thing that fucking pisses me off is racing games dont have split screen anymore when i have friends and family over i dont want them to have to bring their fucking xbox to play forza motorsport
Me and my sisters used to play Minecraft on 3 way split-screen back in the day when the game was new on PS3. Those where the good ol days. Especially playing with my dad on MW2 on split-screen or split-screen online multiplayer on Black Ops 2.
My first time playing Minecraft was at my neighbor's house on split screen. Same with Cod MW2 but with my cousin at his house. Those were for sure the good old days
If I could get my dad to even pick up a controller that would be awesome, to have him just experience something new. But the guy doesn't want to try anything in life. You'd think as a father he would show some interest in his kids' hobbies or at least want to share his own. But what can you really expect from an alcoholic, even a highly functioning one?
Online multiplayer is a lot of fun, especially if you're playing with long distance friends, but it will never replace the social feeling of couch multiplayer / split screen multiplayer. And like you said earlier, it's still present in most fighting games. Even though my girlfriend owns a Nintendo Switch lite, I still find it to be a shame that we both can't play Splatoon together on the same screen whenever I bring over my switch and my dock.
This is everything I've been saying and complaining about. Gaming has become a bit lonely, and I miss the split screen days. And fuck how I Hate not being able put a disc in and just play

Black ops cold war actually included splitscreen coop on zombies! A surprise to be sure after it was removed from modern warfare. And it was one of the titles you mentioned that had record breaking sales.
I was raised in a boarding school, and I was the only kid with a ps3 so we got together and played on the weekends. It was actually amazing! Splitscreen was the best part of it. I remember saving money and buying a new controller so my roommate can play with me.
I remember my friend being so brutally owned in Halo that he threw his controller in the hard glass screen which in turn ricochets the controller off the screen and hit his forehead. In Halo we would take out our shields with frag grenades and run towards the bases in the Blood Gulch map. Then you'd throw another grenade and blast yourself into the hatch ontop of the base.
I was sitting in a vc on discord when I watched this and when you played the discord sound effect, my brain went. "Who joined the call!" thank you ps. Currently binging all of your videos and loving them. Keep up the good work.
Dude your so right I bitch about this to my little brother all the time and that's also why I never bought into a new console since PS3 , it's PC and emulators for me now , also about to try to get into virtual machines to see what I can do wjth those to fix the non existent couch gaming
My buddy and I were waiting for halo infinite to get co-op campaign and split screen to play it. Now split screen has been scrapped and co-op is delayed till winter AGAIN. It probably won't come out anyways. Most likely it gets cancelled at this point
One of my all-time favorite first person shooters won me over because of the split screen multiplayer, and that game was Red Faction 2. Someone at my college was playing it on their GameCube, and for that reason, I decided to get myself a copy on the PlayStation 2

Dude so the executives basically huddling together saying *Oh yes make the consumer purchase two game systems if they wanna play split screen with their children under the same roof*
On the other hand, by playing locally with friends, you can motivate them to buy their copy of the game after they tried it, and so they can also do local multiplayer with their family or friends. Local multiplayer does not need to replace online play. It adds to it!
Me and my friends and I are kind of refusing to let split screen die. Almost every time they come over, one or two will grab their Xbox, and we'll have a Halo Lan party with 8 or more people.

To me Split Screen is still not dead. I do it once in a while. I try gathering my friends and I make videos playing split screen. My Black Ops 3 Splitscreen Video has gotten over 1000 views. That shows that split screen is definitely not dead.

I think we the consumer still have the power over this. If it doesn't say splitscreen coop on it then don't buy the game. I have multiple people who like to game in my house and buying a console for everyone to be able to play together is just ridiculous
it may not be a sibling now that I'm older but my partner and i still want to enjoy some together time while being in the world of gaming and buying 2 gaming platforms for 1 household on a tighter budget just doesn't make sence if one is a casual gamer and doesn't play often and even less so if they play only coop.

What I’m more surprised are how some gamers, not devs, are so against split screen. You could see these kinds of people on Halo discussion boards on Waypoint and Steam discussions. They give these technical reasons like “oh it’s just gonna be too intensive” and other tech nonsense. Why is that a consideration. It’s not these guys who are programming the game. It’s something game devs should be able to figure out and optimize. And some games ported to PC already had that feature in the console version: I.e. halo cod borderlands lost planet 2 resident evil 5 etc. Why can’t they just bring them back? Some just say to just buy another copy and play it online without considering, what if people physically came over. I only got one TV. And surely my friends aren’t keen on packing their own PCs to their car. “Oh but PC players never have the need to play locally”. Yeah but don’t you have occasions when people come visit? Wouldn’t it be nice to play with people who you haven’t seen for a long time without having the hassle of setting up multiple station? Anti-splitscreen are robbing themselves of a feature that can be available at anytime and easily setup ASAP. Because of this “PC players never need to play locally” mindset, companies are able to get away with locking the feature away so they could sell more copies or subscriptions (I.e. Halo MCC). Even if you think you’ll never use it, wouldn’t it be nice for it to be available for other people to use it? And this “oh it’s nostalgia” argument. I don’t care if I’m overeating on memberberries. I can grow more of that and have a blast. I know there are games that already support local play like Fighting games, party games, and sometimes racing games. But it’s probably not something me and my friends would always want to play at that moment. I am infinitely grateful for talented modders for making programs like Nucleus Coop, Borderlands 2 Split screen mod, and that one guy who made a split screen mod for L4D2 on the workshop. They are truly saints. Not too long ago, I was able to grow more memberberries by playing ResiEvil 5 COOP with a friend through Nucleus COOP. It was really nice. In no ways of disrespecting these talented people, I shouldn’t be needing a third party program to play Split Screen. It should be available from the get-go.
Yea things have changed. When i was a kid in elementary you had super nintendo and sega genesis. Having a Tv in your room was a rare thing. Sometimes my mom let me have a small tv and when i got grounded it was gone. So mostly at my house or friends houses there was the family Tv in the living room. Game time was limited to hours when we werent in school and our Dads werent using the tv when they got off work. We would play things like mortal kombat and nothing was split screen really. We would take turns. How crazy is that? 😂 when n64 and playstation came out all the same rules applied for our gaming time. Mostly we played outside building ramps for our bikes and trading hot wheels and pokemon cards. We loved gaming though and it started to take up more of our free time. When ps2 and xbox came out, split screen was in its peak. Staying overnight at friends, playing halo and atv offroad fury etc etc. Long story short. Games were harder to access and if you didnt have a friend to do multiplayer with then the campaign would get old. Games are great now, we used to dream about the worlds like skyrim and red dead 2 and starfield etc. Its a dream come true. But i feel like they are just too readily available. People are kind of isolated being home alone connected through the internet. If the younger generation saw the way things changed like i did they would understand. Its just so different now and i think its altering the way we interact socially and prioritize different things.
online sucks due to one simple component the LAG if you don't live in an area with fiber you are just stuck with 50 mb and still you need to think about the multiple devices hook at the house network, local multiplayer is something that a co op game in obligated to have, and I would say that only online multiplayer games that don't offer that local multiplayer game mode are just a spit on the face of the consumer and I will call them a scam because what assure you that the day of tomorrow the servers would be still up for you to play with your friends ? today you don't own your game you are just renting them at absurd prices while game studios pump you full of micro transactions
on the game im working now i have plan to add split screen lan and online option my plan is to have multiple option to play multiplayer 1. play with up to 4 player on the same computer 2. play lan game 3. play online 4. play online or lan with and play up 4 player on the same computer. the idea is my game i will have the option to play up 4 player's no matter if play offline online or nearby network (lan) that mean i theory with 2 computer you will able to play up to 8 players. 4 on the one computer and 4 on the other computer. i personally know only 2 games that let you do that serious sam 1 and Jazz Jackrabbit 2 i don't say the are not other game i say i don't know other game that let you play with network and split screen at the same time. local multiplayer are fun wean you have someone to play near by but this the problem the times you don't that person to play, online you almost always have some to play agent's but usually you dont have communication also the other problem that in the order to play online or lan you have to have multiple devices. with combining local multiplayer and online/lan game you have the benefit off both world. do you wand to call you friends to play to gether or have family members you play with multiple people on the same device, some and also you able to play online in the order to have more or in the order to play with friends or family members that is in another place.
That’s so disappointing like frfr I want Apex legends State of decay and especially resident evil to Be local play like I’m so sad they don’t do this anymore resident evil is literally based with having a partner 90% of the game
I like online gaming but I like the option splitscreen or couch coop I play games with family and friends I think it's a lot of companies want to push people to buy more copies of the games that's why they are pushing online play more. It boils down to money which is funny all these new consoles can handle splitscreen but they dont want to put effort in it.
It sucks but I hope the steam deck entices more pc games to include couch co op. I can do split screen on bo 3 which is cool but nearly no other cod game has this feature built in

As a Game Developer myself, I can say split screen isn't nearly as hard to develop as online multiplayer. I would say it is at max, 1/5 of the effort.
Every weekend I play Rainbow six vegas 2 on my PS3 with neighbours. That's the last good rainbox six game as split screen is gone.
