Man, tossing ice shard after switching for silver cauldron really threw me for a loop.
To excel at the game you must think like a dice, to think like a dice you must look like a dice, hence the conclusion: Northernlion take a marker and draw dice dots on your head!

yeah hall of mirrors is the best item for her, you just flood your side with tons of dice and you can constantly replace and replay spells over and over.
I'll be honest, I don't watch a lot of your content but somethings catch my eye and this is definitely one of them and i have not missed an episode.

Throwing out ice shard but keeping infliction was a pretty big brain move when you had the guaranteed odds cauldron there NL
Its nl man. Nothing he does follows any proper order of operations which is the key to winning in this game.
Offsetting your spells screwed you on Silver Cauldron. All your even spells were on odds, but then you couldn't use them.
In general, that kind of meta is way too fiddly to be worth it and it's easy to get yourself into bad states with it. Most players would be better off placing their spells completely randomly so they don't systematically lock themselves out the way you did.
However, I think it's mildly better to put spells that use evens on even numbers and spells that use odds on odd numbers. This allows you to use Duplicate for value. It also allows you to mill more easily with silver/gold cauldron without locking yourself out of being able to use things you're casting.
Witch only ever gets 3 dice. If you have duplicate, putting Hall of Mirrors on 6 is great because you can play it and use it in the same turn.
I honestly love this series!
Not sure how repetitive it gets (there's been a decent amount of repeated enemy types across the different runs so far), but assuming there's a decent amount of rng in the different "episodes," I'd be totally down for this to become a longer running series!
Its great that Ryan has been so open to tips and criticism lately, I think after the A20 grind he has become open to new strats.
Silver Cauldron for Cauldron was the worst trade deal in the history of trade deals.

Infliction seems bad. Am I crazy or is the cost of one (Possibly two) dice for a mere 3 damage just not worth it?
Probably would have been good to replace that early on rather than cauldron. Might be wrong though.
I think his line of reasoning is that it wouldnt make sense to have two cauldrons, and he ended up not considering the fact that Infliction is basically worthless past the very early game.
I wouldn't say it's bad. It's only 3 damage but you can put in any die so it turns a leftover die into better damage than just throwing it. Infliction seems just okay.
Infliction's value lies in the fact that you only gain so many dice. If you roll 3 dice, and have 2 cauldron and 2 other spells, then you can cast all four spells and end up just throwing one die. This is 3 total damage plus whatever your other two spells are. If you roll 3 dice and have one cauldron, one infliction, and 2 other spells, then you can cast the other two spells, cast cauldron + infliction and deal 4 damage plus whatever your other two spells are.
After you reach the point where you can chain cast one particular spell such as ice lance, then Infliction isn't worthwhile.
I would think you would want to put spells that do dice roll damage rather than a preset damage like the ice spell in a lower dice spell slot so you don't have to spend a large die to get it on the field, rather spend a low die to get it on the field then use the larger die to do damage.
If that’s how probability worked I would agree. You have the same chance of getting 2 sixes as you do getting a 1 and 6
@@yesman12345ful While this is true, if you use a high dice spell slot for a spel that benefits from a high dice roll, you are spending a high dice roll you could be using to cast the spell on preparing it. It's basically an opportunity cost, so it is better value to do it that way. Hopefully that makes sense.
@@yesman12345ful Just gonna point out real quick you don't have the same odds. Assuming the game rolls dice like they would in real life, you have much better odds of a 1 and a 6 than 2 sixes. Easy to see if you're rolling 2 dice: 2/36 chances of 1 and 6, 1/36 chances of double sixes. Duplicates are less likely than single rolls because there are fewer orderings.
@@phibok1235 the strat is not about the probability, because you already have all the dice. Yes, the strat does not help if your 3 dice are all low value, but if you by have a 1 a 1 and a 6 and need to spend the 6 to unlock the spell you will only do 1 damage with it. If you can unlock the spell with a 1, with the same roll, you will do 6 damage.
Witch is tough, no doubt. Best luck I've had is having a freeze-oriented build and taking prepared spell slots every time. Starting with 4 spells let's you get around some tricky things, such as strong spells that take 2 dice to spawn otherwise.
It is possible to change the first prepared spell for the witch at any time in the equipment tab. That way you don't have to start with cauldron out, but any of them.

I really hope this series sticks around, I just enjoy it so much and nl is honestly not as bad at this. At thr beginning of slay the spire i was cursing at the screen, but here I agree with a lot of his plays. Keep up the good work, egg!
Witch is easily the best character in this game. In terms of strategy, skill, and fun (in my opinion), witch outranks all other characters by a good margin for me.

Really love this series so far.
The Witch bends my mind into mush, but she's pretty cool to play. The last character usurped the Robot has my favorite character to play as though.
Using the Inventor card on Grand Finale so you can Thanos snap bosses into dust is one of my favorite things to ever happen in any roguelite/deck builder.

I think this one piece of equipment which locks all dice of a specific value would be amazing with a frost build. Freeze the enemy, lock 1s. Would be a cool synergy.
Unfortunately, locks only seem to affect rolled dice, and frost doesn't re-roll, just lowers their value.

Went and bought the game. Binge played it over my nightshifts im loving the thief and robot so far.
The witch is my fav for sure lol, so easy to freeze trap so many enemies (till ya run into the snowman and regret everything lmao)

You got me to buy it! I've done well so far, but I did lose a robot run. Thought I'd watch this before I tried The Witch. In my thief win I took a bear potion and just became a bear for the rest of the run and that was pretty cool!
I've lost all my robot runs. Usually I try to use the ultima weapon for fun but even with the buster sword I lost. Not sure why I'm so bad with him but I have a good run saved now.
litapd311 I've found the best strat is to increase jackpot range and upgrade that. Guaranteeing jackpots almost every turn is super good. I still can't win as witch but I got super close! Banshee ended me right before the boss and it was honestly heartbreaking. It felt pretty good, y'know, until i died
@@litapd311 The Robot is a tricky character to play, you have to make the most of the dice you get and rig the odds to your favor to do well. Also, the Thief bear transformation is amazing if you can get it, it's almost a guaranteed win.

Ryan was right during the stream that it doesn’t matter where you put your spells in your spellbook unless you’re building a run around creating specific dice. Assuming you have one six it’s as likely to play the “need a six” equipment if it’s on the sixth spell as it is the fifth spell. So saying odds should go on even slots isn’t really statistically accurate

I hope this series turns into a full one, it suits this channel and NL so well
this extended intro taught me that the robot's dice art is broken. The side his arm is on should be a 2 because the three space is the side with the faces.
The witch definitely has the most strategic depth. With the other characters you can at least get a sense of whether or not your decisions were straight up bad. With her the battles feel more fluid and open-ended. Like moving from a puddle to an ocean.

I feel like if you get a silver cauldron you gotta start investing heavily into odd spells, which is why ice shard would've been good to hold onto. Not to mention you can upgrade it so it takes any dice, so you could throw your evens in there.
On the witch, synergy is everything

It took me so many attempts to beat the witch the first time. You had the right idea putting odd spells on even slots and vice versa. I've found the ice shard spell is really good, and then later blizzard. Frozen seems to demolish most enemies.
For but a moment I got to experience the golden age, and then I was thrown back into the muck of the egg cam age. The egg giveth and the egg taketh away.

The witch is the character with the most potential for breaking the game. Infinite dice with Hall of Mirrors allows you to do some stupidly long games with stupidly powerful results.
Hall of mirrors gives a shitload of dice... imagine rolling all evens with cristal ball and max dice... holy.

So I got this game after these episodes began to come out, and the witch was definitely the hardest to play. Curiously enough, a lot of what NL was saying I did too, like putting the things that needed odds in even numbers and trying to play the hall of mirrors often, however I was having trouble getting through the 4th level, I basically would be able to survive the second to last fight before leveling with 1 oe 2 HP, and inevitable die in the next fight. I found that actually it went better if you placed the odd needed attacks in odd number, and same with evens, but in the lowest die posible. I was finally able to win after like 20 failed runs after placing the ice attack on 3 (needing a 3 to place and then a 5 to attack for max damage) and using the even ones on four. It helped to have duplicate (instead of hall of mirrors, because it gives you an extra dice right away) as a prepared spell along with cauldron (not gold or silver, because you can use either effectively depending on what it is) that way it makes sense to have the same needed dice along the attack and then you can spam the same attack multiple times in a single turn. Using Nudge isn't a bad idea either, since it can change an odd to an even and the other way round no matter what. That's another thing, juggling the attacks but making sure that you re-utilize max damage combos. Very complicated, but I feel like once you get the hang of it is probably the most interesting character to play!
I need 30 mins of nl playing with cam and other computer settings to get the perfect stream

Witch took me 20 attempts before I finally figured out how to win with her. Freeze is usually the way to go. BTW, spells that have two boxes don't take up two slots, they just require two dice to prepare. So, if you put magic spear on 2, you'd need two 2s to prepare it.
I think part of the reason I watch this series is because the music slaps
I hope Ryan completes all the episodes for each character before ending this series, I find this very entertaining .
Ok here's is my take for even or odd placement. There is not an increased chance that you roll more even or odd so you should put evens on evens and odds on odds. The witch is made to go for long turns. If you roll two 4s and you have your 4 as an even you can use it. Otherwise your turn just ends. You never want a dead number to roll and by putting odds on evens and vice versa you create a dead roll.

NL chose damage output and no defense near the end. He just got mind flooded with all the spells choices and went feral.

I formally apologize for judging you on at least two mistakes. I bought the game today because of you and I ended my turn twice without doing anything...tbf the end turn button is close to the calculate button for the robot.
Just gonna throw it out there that your more powerful spells with regards to putting damage on the board all made use of evens, so changing out your cauldron likely hurt you pretty dramatically. Of course, if you had it earlier and had the time to shift around your build to put an odd-only damager on an odd spell slot you could have probably used it pretty well.

Magic key gives you more low value dice. If you move stronger spells to lower values you can pop off super hard by refreshing the spells.

Given that freeze makes a 1 *slightly* more likely than any other die roll, I'd put the best thing there (or, y'know, have the best thing automatically open at the start).
Do you know that you can replace the prepared skills right? I found you could get a more consistent build if you take the second prepared slot for the first choice and get the upgraded ones later.
true! I also thought upgrade would be better at first, but having an already prepared spell really helps a lot more
