This is an awesome video for newbies to the world of shotguns. The way things are right now, some foreign firearm manufacturers (that's right Turkey, I'm looking at you) are releasing new, and funkier looking designs, and getting them imported to the US more and more. The most common of these *are* in fact shotguns, and a new wave of gun owners have chosen to come in swinging for the fences with a multitude of 12ga models. So being unsure about what shells do what, and essentially starting from scratch, videos like these will be invaluable to them! Keep em' comin' big guy 👍🏽
(When they're in stock) shotgun ammo can be intimidating. There are TONS of options and loads. This just scratched the surface, but as I'm sure you noticed it was a bit wet put that day
Very good video! Thanks. I think pumpkins were a good choice for displaying shot vs watermelons that most people like to use they typically explode regardless of what you throw at them
Thank you. We were out for demonstration, not entertainment. I think that's why most go with watermelons. Those can make just about anything look impressive. We wanted to show the actual projectile effect.
@@GBGuns I'm glad you did, good job. If I ever make a video I'm using pumpkins. Or actually, any other fruit/vegetables that you have tried that mimic real life.... Uh.. Effects?
I have to say being a super green beginner for these things Buckshot and the slug is super massive damage on the rip tear and damage scale especially like you mentioned a bucket is like a 9 mm round impacting / hitting 9 times in a single shot. Game over
i was looking at shotguns, i love my mossbergs, but im getting into semi-auto, and your video is awesome dude! I love how you even take the shells apart and explain the numericals on the ammo boxes. and help us entering the shotgun platform how to understand it better. There is alot of talk on the FPS rating on shotgun shells and how sometimes lower FPS will fail to properly cycle. I like how you mention you have a video for that too! after this i'll absolutely watch that one as well :D thanks for the content dude!
Thanks this is awesome I’m new to firearms but have a love for 12gauge guns I’m not sure where it come from but this is an awesome tutorial on 12 gauge ammunition
Just found your channel after watching you drink and answer questions with some AK Guy that I've been binge watching. First off I'm glad you were able to show him what good vodka is with the Crater. Secondly now I'll be binge watching your channel as well. Remember if you want to get out of the rain for some shooting there's a few good places over here in the gorge.
Actually we could use a place for an upcoming photo shoot for Ballistic magazine with a VERY badass rifle. Can you contact us on the GBGuns Facebook page?
Old video but I'm a bit of a beginner. I'm just getting back into it now at 54. Last time I had a shotgun, I was 12yrs old. Is there such thing as a 'sampler' pack of shotgun shells, where you get 2 shells of varying types? I ordered a pump action 12 gauge that handles 2.75" and 3", but I don't care about 3" shells just yet. I want to sample a variety without going broke by buying a dozen of each.
@OhGawdHesGotAGun welcome back. I've never seen a sampler pack, but really it comes down to what you want to use the gun for. Generally birdshot is great for having fun, buckshot for defense
@MrBigNDH you can run slugs in most shotguns, but chokes can be dangerous with a slug. As I undersrand it you want to go no tighter than "IC" "improved cylinder"
So I’ll be mostly shooting paper targets at a range. Should I stick with smaller pellets for this? I know I can’t use slugs at the range but I’m not sure about buckshot.
If it's just paper and to have a good time the only downfall to bird shot is you'll destroy your targets pretty quickly. Otherwise they're cheaper, more available, and have less recoil.
in regards to shell length... You used the words smaller and larger/bigger instead of shorter and longer, was this for a certain reason, that seems confusing. To me that would be 20 ga in a 12 ga chamber for example. Well done overall, thank you
It's usually not labeled, but in general heavier loads and higher velocities will be "high brass". If you can open the box, high brass has appreciably more brass to the cartridge
Yup, soft lead against hard rocks at distance is fine. We wear eye protection and a hat with a bill, never had anything come back at us. There has been more spall come over the walls at my local shooting range than stuff come back from shooting at the quarry.
I have him to shotgun since I was 9 years old. The size of the shot has no effect on the recoil the gunpowder charge does the weight of the shot does but not the size of the shot
Correct, but for newcomers it's a safe general rule. For example buckshot wil almost always have more mass than birdshot (generaly application stuff, I know there are extremes of every tyype).

This video was very informative.....I am big into handguns but wanted to know more about shotgun ammo....learned a lot here
Nice quick and concise video for shotguns. Love slugs!!!
Thanks for the video. I was just shopping for a home defense shotgun today. I know a lot about handguns but not shotguns. 👍

I was looking at a Rock Island vrpa40 5 round mag loader pump for $380.00. Like SGT. Schultz. I know nothing.
We had some other videos planned that would have been helpful but we were rained out
Just be careful, I know there are several hi-cap magazines for the Rock Island shotguns 😁
@UCh9mZXO0jK-xsqFKwViUBxA
That’s a little over kill. Maybe not.

think is the best choice for defense...
Shotgun newbie here! Now I know what to look for ammo related. THANKS!!!!
I glad this video helped

I'm glad you found it helpful!
Ok thank you I was looking for a video that explains shotgun shells and the way you explained it made me understand it a little better
Thanks for keeping it short and sweet! Many people like to get complicated with their explanations (too much fluff)
Like the rain, like the pumpkins and hadn't seen a mag fed pump action. Always more to learn. Great video!
Thank you. Haha, Oregon in the fall: plenty of rain and pumpkins

Welcome to the channel! Brandon's a friend of mine, but our channels are very different. Hell yeah to some Crater Lake Vodka!

Very helpful video, I only own pistols & revolvers at the moment. Gonna rewatch this whenever I pick up my first shotgun 👍
Good for the new folks!

What video are you referring to about the energy for cycling
Thank you for the video! Now I know more when shopping at the local store.
Thank you so much great video even three years later
Thank you. I'm not a shotgun expert, but a video like this is what I wished was around when I first got a shotgun.
Forgive my ignorance. Im new to shotgunning. Can you put a slug through any shotgun? And does the choke affect the slug?
@MrBigNDH you can run slugs in most shotguns, but chokes can be dangerous with a slug. As I undersrand it you want to go no tighter than "IC" "improved cylinder"
Thank you for the lesson.
Awesome video - newer hunter and this helped a ton. Thanks!
sds imports .I got nickel Tokarev tx3 shotty. love it!!
I'm surprised the slug didn't pulverize the pumpkin. Which slug did you use?
Again, kudos to you guys for carrying on in the "normal" Oregon weather. :) Hopefully you guys didn't catch a cold doing that.
What would you say is the best home defense round for a 12g ?
Great video. Very helpful

I love that Slugs... Wew
Awesome video w visual demo
Exactly what I needed thank you!
It can be bewildering at first, but is pretty simple once you understand the system.
in regards to shell length... You used the words smaller and larger/bigger instead of shorter and longer, was this for a certain reason, that seems confusing. To me that would be 20 ga in a 12 ga chamber for example.

Good point. Human error, I tried to simplify things as much as possible with this for the new folks
Awesome video, I gasaped and chuckled seeing the slug haha I'd never seen one
The ounce means pellets weight or the powder weight?
Projectile weight, just as the grain weight is for rifles and pistols.
How do i tell if i am buying high brass or low brass??
It's usually not labeled, but in general heavier loads and higher velocities will be "high brass". If you can open the box, high brass has appreciably more brass to the cartridge
Great info thank you
Like the Use of the KFC containers 😅👍🏽
They were a great size for this and no we weren't planning on ever putting food in them again.
Thanks great video
Good job
why english shells are much faster than italian shells, and often all the english cartridge components are italians ?
Thx you
R.I.P. TREMENDO
GRACIAS 👍
i love " this is not scientific" means a great to just shoot ...lol , good vid
Most convincing😊
I hope so, it's just simple facts
This guy's alrite with me.
👍🏻
Good video. See mine as a comparison for clays cartridges!
How to buy
Certainly not on TH-cam!
I’d be worried about ricochets off the rocky berm
We've fired thousands of rounds there over the years and not had one piece come back atus, not one ding on the car either
Wow. No dislikes
I love kfc
Shooting into rocks?

Great informative video. Want an education? Go to GB Guns and schooled.
Pumpkin hunting, be vewi quiet.
More like a short range anti aircraft rifle 🤣🤣
Thumbs up.
