      How about buying the M1 macbook air, which is fanless, but plugging it into an external laptop fan stand, and then running high workloads? Would that be ok for longevity? This solution sounds like a budget middle ground between performance & heat minimisation, as such I was just wondering if I could get your opinion on this please?

    I just bought a M1 Macbook Air to replace my 10 years old Macbook Air. My 10 year old Macbook Air was still working great but I was using Big Sur at work and wanted it on my laptop. The number one rule in my opinion is to keep it away from liquids, to the extent of never leaving drinks right next to it and never pass drinks over it. I keep mine in a case when I'm not uisng it, and my next tip is very important on older macbooks and that is NEVER EVER use a third party charger, only use a genuine apple charger.

    • @visitedebharat
      @visitedebharat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Yes genuine apple charger works best, actually its tuned to MacBooks better.
      In my observation, I found some extra percentage of degradation of battery when using 3rd party chargers like anker, dell pd charger. but with apple power adapters degradation is very minimal.

    One of the reasons I bought a MacBook Pro was due to how much support they get and longevity. I have friends who have had Macbooks for 8+ years while other friends have to get a new Windows laptop every other year. I love Windows but MacOS does a better job with optimization for sure

      Yes! I hate how expensive their products are, but I will never buy a non Mac computer ever again. I got my first one back in 2015 and it’s still going strong. We just have issues with base model storage. But I will be buying another one and my husband will keep our current one. I tell all of my windows friends that they are crazy and missing out. Plus not buying antivirus ware every year saves us tons of money over the years.

      That’s why I buy macs, I only upgrade every 6-8 years, they’re a great investment. It’s easy for me to buy the upgraded ram and SSD options, despite the upfront cost, because it’s a better deal in the long run than replacing a cheap windows machine every 1.5 years. Plus they have great resale value, so if I ever want to upgrade early it’s basically 50-70% off a new one if I sell the old one.

    Good advice about keeping your machine safe. I've been doing the same for over 30 years and never had a mishap. Now that Microsoft has brought out a buggy Windows 11 with crazy installation requirements - none of our 5 machines can be upgraded and instead of replacing them all, we're going to keep them on Windows 10 as long as possible. As I go into retirement I'm now looking to get to an Apple for the first time - Macbook Pro M1 14". I saw a recent video how the Apple RISC performance has now outstripped Intel's CISC architecture - and significantly undercuts the power requirement which kills Wintel laptops. All the best, Rob in Switzerland

    A note on thermal performance and longevity. With the temps that these chips run at and thermal throttle at, (which is actually a bit different between the air and pro), you may get more performance out of the pro, especially for long hard workloads as the increased cooling will mean less throttling, but the passively colled macbook air will likely do better for longevity alone. The chip throttles at a lower temp, and it wont accumulate dust. Nor does it have any intakes to block or fans that can fail. Its thermal performance over time will likely be more consistent and doesnt require the user to maintain it by claning the internals. Generally means it should last longer and be less likely to fail, even to thermals because its limits are consitent, though you are obviously sacrificing some peak performance.

    • @SaifSKH
      @SaifSKH 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I had my 15in MPB for 7 years and just recently upgraded to M1 Pro 16in. I've spilled sweet tea once and hen a bunch of water 5 years later on the mac and it's still working. Just had to give it to apple store for a good clean. I had a top + bottom cover and keyboard/trackpad stickers for scratch protection. I've used my mac in every temperature possible and it is still running super-good. I just upgraded for the M1 performance honestly

      the keyboard and screen never touch. There is a rubber lining on the outside of the screen that only comes in contact with the edge of the bottom part. No need to get a screen protector on a mac

    I’m still using my mid 2012 15” Macbook Pro Retina quite successfully. I even updated it to macOS Big Sur (using Patched-Sur) recently. Still chugging along nicely, but eager to upgrade to a new M? Powered 16” MBP when they are released. The only things I’ve ever done to the 2012 machine is upgrade the Wifi card to 802.11 AC so i can unlock it with my Apple Watch and I reapplied the thermal paste.

    my base model 13inch 2015 MacBook Pro is still going strong and all I do is regular maintenance; cleaning, and replacing thermal paste. I also put a custom fan curve on it to keep it nice and cool. And I upgraded the storage from 128gb to 1tb. The only thing I'm considering doing is replacing the original battery for a new one.

    Thinking of replacing my macbook is 3 years old (mid 2018 version). Do you think it is worth selling mine and replacing to the M1 just because I am suffering from keyboard problems? I've heard that keyboards that have gone thru the keyboard replacement programme still suffer with the same problems.
    TLDR: should i use the free keyboard replacement programme to fix my macbook (which is ~50% effective) or just straight up sell and upgrade to M1 macbook?

    Excellent video man. 2 things
    1. It is said in various forums that a hard shell case for MacBooks is inadvisable since it can add some extra weight on the lid of the laptop and potentially make the hinge loose in years. Do you advocate the same?
    2. Would love to see a video on how to clean the unnecessary heap of files in MacOS without additional software as you mentioned.

      Wouldn't advise using one. I used one on my MB Air from day 1 and after a year the screen started to glitch occasionally, after 2 years, it started to flicker or completely bouncing. I cannot help but think that damn case had something to do with the screen going faulty, specially because I could notice the lid shut a lot faster because of the extra weight.
      Oh, and of course, the bottom part of the case, made the laptop heat a lot faster, despite the 'vents' it had.

    Really useful video. Heat is a big problem on my 2017 Intel MBP and causes the screen to have problems. Avoid MBP with Touch Bar as this commonly fails -I've taped over mine because it flashes endlessly). My best advice is to try and spend as little money with Apple as you can get away with because if something fails then you are left with either an unrepairable paperweight or a hefty repair bill.

    • @MurdahProduXtions

      I also own a 2017 mbp and I got the same issue with the Touch Bar flashing although it didn’t bother me as much. I’ve had the computer since 2017 and it’s worked wonders. Just due to the age the battery got worn down and over time wear and tear took over to the point where my display cable tore due to poor design choice from apple now I’m trying to scrape together some cash for the m1 air. The cost for a new display is $500 if I put in a little more I can just get a new m1
