  • This video is about a Catalina 22 Project. This is my first sailboat. Great learning tool for both sailing and introduction to boat maintenance. Experiment with fiberglass and gelcoat. Polished aluminum plates on the rudder, refinished tiller.

Nice work. Do you have any "how to" videos as I am a new boat owner (Catalina 22) and need to do lots of work on my boat and have no idea how to do fiberglass.

Awesome. I just got a 1987 Catalina 22 that I'm cleaning up. I'm also unsure of what I have and what I'm missing. Time to learn!

Adam Lesoon Congratulations on your new boat, you’re gonna love it! I now have an Endeavour 33 sailboat, and I’m looking for another Catalina 22 for teaching. Enjoy Adam.

@Bike Mike Hey Mike. A few weeks ago my daughter and I were talking. She commented that I had always done for everyone else. That I never seem to do anything strictly for myself. Asked me if I had a bucket list. I told her I had wanted to sail since I was a little boy. It just never happened. She got me thinking. Next thing I'm at my local lake signing up for lessons. I'm walking around looking at all the different boats knowing absolutely nothing. And there she was. 1987 Catalina 22. Sitting in the weeds neglected. For sale. Well I'm certainly going to see how the lessons go first. But she's been on my mind. What can I say. I like rescuing lost causes. I looked her over like I would an old car in the field. Like someone who doesn't know boats. Took a lot of pics. She really didnt look that bad to me. But I dont know fiberglass. And there were some issues with cracks on edge of deck. If you have an email or messenger where I could send pics I would sure value your opinion. Thanks!

@@gregorywebster6640 no need. later in life, don't buy a project, buy a ready boat. ask yourself if you want to restore a boat or sail it... both are valid choices. many options on CL for 2k. how were the lessons this summer?

@@reallyhappenings5597 I just took that first lesson the other day. For never being on a boat I think I did pretty well. I certainly need to work on things. The wind shifting really messed with me. But instructor liked my light hand on the tiller and corrections but at times I was kinda lost. Helped the instructor change sails for a race the next day to say thanks and get a little more experience. I didnt like the lack of visibility ahead. But loved everything else about it. Yes I agree. Decided to look for a ready to sail boat. Sad to see all the neglected boats at the docks.

@@gregorywebster6640 good for you! you don't need a "big" 22 footer if fun and experience are your goals. there is a LOT to be said for small sailboats in the 8-18' range. easily trailered and launched, easy to own in every way, and sailing a smaller, simpler boat is a truly elemental experience. There's a reason that longtime sailors of big boats often return to the small ones. May you be one with nature again soon 😉

What did you use to clean and polish the aluminum plates on the rudder/tiller?

I found a guy near me that polished the aluminum for me. He does food grade polishing in restaurant kitchens and factories. He used some type of grit with a polishing wheel on a bench grinder. It cost me $125 to have the 2 plates done. Well worth the money.
