Eighty loosey lefty tighty, I've been a machinist for years, and it still takes me a couple takes to spit it out in reverse like that.
C-22 owner here, The turnbuckle T-bolts get bent usually when raising the mast if the shroud turnbuckles aren't facing the stern. They jam as the mast is coming up or going down. Another thing I can suggest is to put an old water bottle lid on your deck plug for the mast lights when your boat is in storage. Otherwise water can get inside and corrode the wiring. Not such an easy fix tracing wires and such.
I strongly suggest a cap for the foot of your mast, makes it much stronger pivot point and prevents distortion of the mast profile.
Way to go peaceful quiet weekend
Thanks for showing the process of getting your *Mast* up!
I'm glad 🍏 Apple 🍎 was there to help you with *IT* Rob!
Hopefully this will be something that can be accomplished as a solo sailor.
🙏🦉
Ahoy Apple & Rob!
I'm Thankful you made a video about setting up your mast.
I've been contemplating getting a Catalina 22.
Your video showing the bent hardware for securing the mast, as well as the size of the bolt going into the base of the mast, & a glimpse of the gauge of the mast, gave me pause for concern.
I understand this is a small sailboat, but even small jaunts up & down the Pacific, from bay-to-bay, seem like trips, that could potentially become beyond the little boat's capabilities.
My search for the right boat, should probably be expanded to more stoutly built models.
I need to try & keep the
boat/trailer combo's weight down, but I need to stay mindful of a boat's fragility-factor too.
Seeing your video was possibly *HUGE* in my tiny little life.
Thanks again folks.

Thanks for the demo on stepping the mast. I had assumed that a gin pole would be required. Nice to see that it's not.
Dude this was a fantastic instructional video on raiaing a mast. Thank you!
Thanks! I had no idea how that was done
Great video! I just bought an 87' Catalina 22 and I'm about to put her this weekend. Advice to you. PLEASE, when you are working on a boat and sailing . . . exchange your wedding band for a silicon one. I almost ripped my finger off a few years ago on a sailboat when my ring got caught on a cleat.
I made the mistake of Google searching ring injuries a while back and 100% second this. Its crazy how much damage a ring can do when working.
nice video- thank you very much for this. i bought a santana 21 2 yrs ago and fixed a bunch of things but hurt my back so i havent sailed it yet. hopefully soon but i do need to stand the mast up first. thanks
That just happened to me this last time I went out in my Capri 18. The Left Handed T bolt that is the part of the turnbuckle that attaches to the starboard chainplate got bent. What happened was that during the stepping process it was not facing forward (it was a little crooked). My partner who was winching it up forced it the last few degrees and the force of the winching bent it. I got a new one from Catalina Direct. Lesson learned: shake out your shrouds before the last little bit of stepping to make sure they are straight.
Great video, lots of great ideas for raising the mast, and interior lighting, thanks.
Nice job you two. Good explanation of what you are doing.
Lots of work, but we’ll worth it!
Nice little treat at 0:48
Thanks, lots of head room in the Catalina.
You bet!
Good video, I'm wondering, is there a reason you didn't use the existing winch which pulls the boat up onto the trailer? I was thinking of trying that.
Could you tell me where you got the mast crutch and how you mounted it?
hey, just the video i needed. what is your yoke pipe made of and is there a roller on the yoke? I going to try an electric winch my next mast raising. those T-blots are most likey bent during the mast raising. my mast has one shroud per side and still hard/easy to loose track of them and easy to bend, A must in the back up parts box. good stuff.
This is Melbourne FL, aint it? Nice video by the way. Im interested in getting a c22 or equivalent swing keel for the ICW
Cool I learned something today. Watching your video made me realize that my Macgregor 25 mast (and spreaders) actually appear to be off a Catalina.
Yes About time my brother...........upload more!
Where can I get one of the mast crutch and if you have a link please send it my way please love the channel
Thanks, here you go! www.catalinadirect.com/shop-by-boat/not-a-catalina/trailerable-boats/mastup-mast-stepper-with-38quot-pintles/
I just bought a 17 ft ODay- so far I cannot raise the mast alone. I need the crutch/ gin pole and winch system or is there any other way ? Thanks.
You made that look easy 🤔
Hi Rob, Were you able to keep the cable from sliding across any part of the boat ? Interesting system ! Thanks for posting .
It only touches the tip of the bow when the lift cable first gets tension, then it lifts away and is not a problem.
Always hook up the aft and side shords before you raise the mask
Aye aye!
5:56 thankyou apple bite that lip
🙄
Well done for a first try. It appears that the mast hole for the pivot pin is torn out. Is that correct? I sailed mine that way for a year before I fixed it. Seemed to work even in 20+ knot winds.
What happened to the reinell ? I got one
Nice vid .. and well beautiful wife seen few times in the video .. happy sailing !
verry nice think u
Glad you enjoyed it!
That's what I call a soft bend... A 2x4 and hard rubber mallet will fix that like new... Only use a hard bend in a emergency "45 deg under 3/4" radius " if you plan on keeping long term you may want to change out all rigging to new SS fitting and wire's... Happy sailing....
Very good info! Thank you!
That's not a part you want to risk failing. Best to do what you did and replace it.
I have a Balboa 22 without that nifty thing at the back of your boat holding your mast.
Next time, seat/step the mast before you raise it on your stepper. That added angle before you seat it adds difficulty.
With the mast in the tabernacle, the midpoint of the mast is at the crutch. It's too heavy to lift the mast and fool with the crutch. Best to do it the way it was shown, lift one end then slide the mast back. That's what the roller is for.
