  • Different Bible Covers - What you need to know. I go through examples of lower and higher quality bible covers and point out that the higher quality bible cover last much much longer than the cheaply made covers. Hope this review is helpful. Enjoy.

    I’ve got a premium calfskin ESV study bible by Crossway and it is amazing. So soft and supple. Such a joy to hold. I could sit and read from it for hours. Great video!

    Very informative video, thank you!
    I wanted to mention that Morocco leather is goatskin. The goatskin hides used to be transported over the Sahara Desert to Morocco. Morocco historically was the trade center for goatskin leather to the ancient world and from this comes the name Morocco leather.

    Just some FYI... I use mink oil paste on my leather and bonded leather bibles. It softens, cleans, and protects the leather, and makes it more pliable. It can make your bibles look new again. There are videos on TH-cam that talk about it.

    I know that this is an old video, but I have recovered some of my Bibles in lambskin. It is super supple and feels a lot like butter. I am actually looking to get a goatskin for my next recover and I think I will use lambskin inside to add to the flexibility and overall feel / life of the Bible. I'll be recovering my "Genuine Leather" Bible with that combination as I want to turn it into my own legacy Bible to pass down. I wish I'd seen your video before I got my current one, but live and learn. Thank you for such a great video. I have been enjoying your videos lately.

    I know since you made this video, you have delved much deeper into the premium bible world.
    It would be interesting to see how much your views have changed.
    Particularly, the ppremuim covers.
    What is your top 3 favorite premium goat skins now and how does the calf skin stack up after all the exposure to different goat skin bibles?

    I watched this for information. The real leather evaluation/opinion was helpful indeed. I felt the synthetics really got treated as a red-headed step child. If all synthetics are very similar, then a statement to that effect when you were idscussing TruTone would have been very helpful. Thanx.

    Good review Beau. I think genuine is better than trutone. But that's a minor difference. Calfskin for daily driver and goatskin for nice editions for special occassions and collecting.

    Was curious your thoughts on cloth over board? Crossway and Holiman use them on a good amount of their new stuff. I find it a nice option for study Bible's that will never leave the house. While a leather would be my church Bible.

    I have my mother's wedding Bible from 1953 in French morocco by Oxford. I treat it with museum/archive grade leather dressing. It is a bit cracked in the yapp at the spine. But basically still going strong.
    I am trying to figure out what edition it is.
    Measures 4 3/4 in X 6 7/8 in X 7/8in.
    Any ideas?

    Novice here, but i assume the flexibility also affects how flat it lays? I imagine the trutone and other synthetics being semi stiff, would ping back a little and lay less flat.

  • @sparkyellis6128
    @sparkyellis6128 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Interesting. I have a TruTone wide margin which didn't hold up well. Granted, it sort of got a dent in it that caused the trutone to delaminate, and I have a problem picking at it because it's there, but it came apart on the edges and has left a strange, felt like material that's underneath. To replace it, I bought the top grain wide margin (ESV) and I love how it feels. I don't have a lot of use in it yet, but it is nice. I don't feel like it's going to have any trouble any time soon. I felt my first goatskin Bible today, my pastor's Cambridge ESV (I think it's a Clarion). I'll be honest, it seemed a lot tougher than I expected. I think I prefer the feel of the top grain because it's smoother and softer. I had a calfskin Bible, and it was good, but left something to be desired for me. I still want a Schuyler to try their goatskin, but in the end I think I think a beefier but softer cowhide may end up my favorite binding choice. Now, if only I had the financial resources to just buy these things to compare and try! Haha

      @BeauTate  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe it is just me. The TruTone covers that I have had have all held up really, surprisingly, well. I might be in the minority but I just assumed that it was similar for others as well. The Crossway Top Grain Leather might be one of my favorites too so you made a great choice for a replacement.

      I'm sure it's not just you. That's the only Trutone I've had trouble with, the rest have done pretty well, it just also happens to be the one I've used most. I like the feel of trutone, and if it's a Bible I'm not planning to use daily or for a long time I'd buy another. I wouldn't choose one for my main Bible, but I'm sure there many who have with no problem. My dad's used a bonded leather Bible for decades. It's beat up, but it still works for him. In the end it's the inside that matters and actually reading and applying it, not the cover, that's more of a hobby.

    • @BeauTate
      @BeauTate  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sparky Ellis so true. It might be superficial but I feel if you like the cover, it just enhances and promotes the reading experience. if I were a more sanctified version of myself, it would be of no consequence what the cover is made of... however, a nicely bound bible in a great cover makes me want to pick it up and open it moreso than a paperback bible or a cheaply bound bible. Maybe one day I will not have this problem.

    • @sparkyellis6128
      @sparkyellis6128 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. If there is anything worthy of a high quality finish, it's a Bible. I only meant to say that my dad's beat up, well used bonded leather Bible beats one of my various "that's so cool" and then never used Bibles any day. I also appreciate the durability of a well made Bible, though. If my dad's was a higher quality (it's a Cambridge, but the cover's beat up) it could be more of an heirloom that I'd love to have and pass on if possible. As it is, it's more of a "hope it holds up for him" type situation.

    • @BeauTate
      @BeauTate  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Elizabeth Rodriguez, it would really depend on your budget. I feel that if you do not have any real budget restrictions, the best cover (longest lasting, most durable, soft yet uniquely grainy texture, flexible) would be a goatskin cover with a calfskin or cowhide liner that is edge lined to the text block. There are also paste down, calfskin covers that would be much more affordable but they will not be as durable and tough.

    Genuine Leather is a really broad term and quality can greatly vary. I have a Tyndale life application Bible in genuine leather that feels as good as my Schuyler goatskin in fact it is my favorite feeling Bible cover ever. It almost felt furry at first. I have other genuine leather Bibles though that are stiff and plastic feeling. They feel cheaper than synthetic covers despite me paying more for them. Thankfully they are study Bibles that I use for reference and not for daily carry.
    Because of that I would not suggest paying a lot more for a “genuine leather” cover unless you can inspect it first. If you want quality look for calfskin or goatskin etc.. and nearly any modern synthetic beats bonded leather.

    • @Jeymez
      @Jeymez ปีที่แล้ว +1

      one thing the reviewer didn't point out was, the type of leather used on modern bibles in the last 5 years is kinda limited. back in the day premium leather was at the top, but the only people that need a bible like that are Pastors that can afford it. bonded leather used to be that inbetween leather, but now bonded leather doesn't have the same meaning it once did. same for genuine leather, and goatskin. bonded leather really is just imitation leather, it gives you a softer feel than a hardcover, but if you want more of the real thing, genuine leather like you said is very broad, but that's where it starts. Goatskin is a different kind of feel, but that's the one they say is the most you can pay for. Im with you, genuine leather is just as good, and when it comes to a bible anyway, you just need something that'll get the job done. there are people that go through things, but im the type that has more one type of bible in the home. my main bible is what i use to preach out of, or sit at a table and read, but i have a smaller bible when i just want to relax without straining my neck. spending over a 100 dollars on a bible is a bit of a waste.

    • @SaneNoMore
      @SaneNoMore ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jeymez I have a few premium bibles in goatskin that will last longer than I will. My experience has me at the point where I will never buy bonded leather again. It doesn’t last at all. I find synthetic covers or even a hardback to be preferable over bonded. I would love to see how the three main synthetics hold up against “genuine leather” as right now I still give preference to genuine leather over synthetic. Obviously calfskin and goatskin are better options but when you already have over 60+ Bibles unless your well off your not going full goatskin on them all.

  • @BillWalkerWarren

    On the bonded leather do you use any oils to protect and preserve the cover ? I know folks with bonded leather bibles that put baseball glove oil on them they look near new and were from the 80s just wondering.

    • @BeauTate
      @BeauTate  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I typically don't but that would make sense. To me, however, buying and owning a bonded leather edition is probably never going to happen because even with great care and preventative maintenance for the edition, the cover will inevitably start to come apart. The only way that wouldn't happen is if it really isn't being used, then what good is that doing.

      Another question do you think leathers from like 20 years back is superior to today’s leathers . The older Bibles you show look better than some more recent ones especially the genuine leather.
      Blessings

    • @BeauTate
      @BeauTate  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BillWalkerWarren could be. The premium bible leathers are more superior now than they ever have been, but when we look at pressed leather, genuine leather and even bonded leather, those are much lower quality now than they were 20 years ago... So, it really depends on what price point if that holds true.

    About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. He became bored and wanted something to read, and while the Kindle was being recharged, he fell into a trance. He saw heaven opened and something like a large bookmoble being let down to earth by its four tires. . It contained all kinds of with both natural and unnatural covers.Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter .Cjoose and read.”
