  • I bought a $300 Wide Margin Bible and I've basically ruined it. Let me show you what I would have done differently.

My system is simple: Look at the page, what color is missing or not as present? Use that one. :D

YES!!! And finding a cheaper Bible to work out your system in is such a good tip.

I purchased a Cambridge Wide Margin Bible in 1976 and continue to use it to this day. I have been very selective as to what notes I place in it. They must be significant, helpful to the text (not a personal thought journal) or the result of a Hebrew or Greek word study. I now have a vast collection of my own study notes in the margins and can actually preach a sermon or create a Bible study right from the margins next to the text. A carefully created wide margin Bible with highly selective study notes can become a pretty powerful tool. I never used highlighters as I do not see any real value in that. I do use and highly recommend archival pigment pens. Prismacolor brand in black as well as Staedtler brand in black are two other good pens for writing in a Bible. After all these years I now need a new leather cover to preserve this highly valued Bible. My family occasionally has discussions as to which of the children gets dad's Bible when he passes.
I am considering purchasing another new wide margin Bible perhaps a Schuyler Canterbury and beginning again and being still more selective regarding which notes I transfer and what I add.
Jason, thank you for your Bible videos.

Two years later, I just had to pop on here and personally attest to having done the last two years in a "cheaper" Crossway ESV wide margin red. Bible and I just purchased a Cambridge wide margin. I feel confident with my non-system system and have had my fill of making mistakes and am ready for the long haul in one bible! Thanks for all the helpful videos!

I just bought my first wide margin today. Never really liked writing in my bible but I'm going to give it a shot since I am reading through the whole bible a few times next year for seminary. God bless and keep making amazing content.

The color coding I think a good way is pick your colors underline the text then write your note in the same color.

MISTAKES: I wanted to comment that I use my White Gelly Roll 08 Pen as sort of a white-out tool over my Micron writing. When I make a spelling error, or if I just make my lettering so messy that I can't read my own writing, I use the Gelly Roll white pen to write over it. It actually works very nicely! The original mistake needs to be dry, and then just go over it once or twice, and let that sit and dry before writing over it. Beautiful.

I am new to reading the bible regularly. I decided to read it through this year. I bought a new bible but I would get stuck on passages that I wanted to ponder. I eventually realised that the problem was that I wasn’t brave enough to mark up the bible, making it difficult to continue reading. I purchased a super cheap bible and now I mark it up and keep reading. I am too new to bible reading to feel good about marking up a bible that I really loved. Love the videos keep up the good work.

Oh my goodness! You gave me the best idea ever. I’m going to buy both of my kids a wide margin Bible and leave them notes. They’re 8 and 6 so I’ll have plenty of time to read and note in each one before they’re ready for them. I love that I can make comments specifically to my daughter in hers and to my son in his Bible. What a precious gift! Thank you!!

Great Advice man!1 Thanks! I usually write with a Pencil instead of a pen. I think it's a little better because like he says in 9:34 , we might mess up. So... it's easier to just change it with a pencil. :)

I’ve still been nervously looking at my Cambridge WM and wondering what I’m going to do with it, but this video has some really helpful advice. I’m thinking of starting to put up videos in the new year to record what happens and it’s great to feel less alone with this project. Thanks for your encouragement in this and other videos. God bless you and the fam this Christmas.

something that was not mentioned in the video regarding highlighting your bible: many normal "wet" highlighters bleed through a bible page and so you get these ugly partial bleeds on the opposite side of the page. I recommend using "dry" highlighters that use a material that is similar to the wax pencils you use in science class to mark experiment beakers. They have them for bible marking and of course they are much thinner than what you use in science class. Sometimes they are called dry gel markers. Another thing you can do instead is use colored pencils for highlighting--colored pencils work really well with the thin bible paper that most bibles have.

I’ve just in the last few years got the courage to write in my bible. But because I started with a cheap AMP bible - I didn’t have a lot of space to write notes. So I went to a post-it note system. May not be the best, but it works for me.

Excellent advice. I like to start with a cheaper Bible or with printouts. I use black Pigma Microns for notes, green for definitions, and blue for quick summaries (like section headings).

Great and informative. This is something you kind of learn as you go because you don't really think of organizing how you take notes and highlights - but it does make a difference.

Such good content Jason. So for me, my "system" is a little different. I really love marked up bibles but I notice that when I get back to it for another pass, I see totally different things and I need another colour or see something else and need to write a new note. That's alright the first few times until I'm reading the book for the 10th time or so then it's just not cute anymore....and I just can't not write the note...then.... I just have to get another bible😔.. and it always ends up havong to be a premium bible just cause it will last longer... then I lose or rather dont readily access the previous notes if I get a new bible. So I think I came up with something better(For now)😆... I read my physical bibles and don't mark them just cause physical bible are AWESOME and encourage my word intake! But then, I study on my digital bible. It has different files for highlights and notes so I can always study the scripture and mark it up and save all my notes. However, I can always have an option to start all over with a fresh bible text and no notes without losing my previous notes and highlights. So now I have a file for my 2019 notes and highlights and in 2020, I'll start afresh but not lose my previous notes and highlights. That way I don't always have to buy a new premium bible every year at least. Hope that's helpful to someone😊.....

Hi Jason. Great videos. FYI. Schuyler has settled on the KJV Canterbury for their first Wide Margin. It should be out late Spring / early Summer this year. Follow up translations should probably be in 2020. Can't wait!!!!! Keep up the good work.

  • @justmoseying
    @justmoseying 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The very, very latest news FYI. The follow up translations in wide margin will be Quentel formats, but not full size. The text will be between the full size and the Personal Size typesetting, about 9.5 pt. font.

great video on Note taking in wide margin bibles..
I have a question on the Cambridge wide margin in the notes section there's blank paper with letters then the lined paper what are these letter headed columns for and do you think it's odd that there's no lines on them..
How do you use that aspect of the Cambridge wide margin.
Thanks for your answer when you can Mike in California

Thats something i will be going to have to consider..
Have you ever seen the Cambridge wide barge and from about 1981..
The font and print and spacing is really super good..
It has a dictionary with all types of encyclopedia type articles good Concordance no extra paper..
Does come in the 3 ring loose leaf binder format as well I have a couple of each one mine are in bonded.black ..
When you compare the font sizes it's like day-and-night the 81 version is so crisp and..
Whereas the current one is bunched up in comparison
