Why we aren't going to Mexico in our RV

  • UPDATE: THIS problem continues - please be aware. Apply for your visa online if possible. SAFE TRAVELS EVERYONE. Safety comes down to using common sense for the most part. Our plans for Mexico got squashed because of the Temporary Import Permit! 3/4 ton and 1 ton vehicles denied entry into Mexico. Read more about it here roamingrv.com/rv-mexico/

    This was resolved. I see and hear from hundreds of RVers and no one had a problem with this. We even had a huge transport type truck in the park hauling a 40 foot trailer.

    I've taken my RV twice from Alberta, twice. Bought the insurance, showed up at Nogales crossing at 6AM when opened, the guy asked where ya going, said have a good time. Stopped at visa place about 30 KM down the road, bought visas, sticker for RV, on the road in an hour. No problem. They want you to come and spend $ in Mexico and make it real easy. There may be all these rules, but nobody checks or even cares. I can't remember if anybody even asked to see our passports. Be prepared to drive slow as the roads are rough and narrow. 4 lane pretty much all the way, but no shoulder, I just straddle center line and pull over when someone comes up behind. Police everywhere to help if you have a flat or such.

Your negative comments and announcements regarding why you wouldn't go to Mexico are PERSONAL opinions, not FACTS needed for people who do want to travel to Mexico. Hi Caroline! Good post. Thanks for the mention, glad I could help you, even though I was the bearer of bad news. The good news is that the ban on 3/4 trucks has been lifted and (so far) in 2017 many RV'ers are getting their TIPS. I did hear from one fellow with a 9 passenger van who had a problem in Baja at the ferry terminal at La Paz, but I think something else was going on. So please contact me if you are thinking of going to Mexico this year and I will give you the most up-to-date and accurate info I can. "Mexico" Mike.

    Flew down to PV twice and stayed with Our friends who drove their truck and trailer down to Lo De Marcos and stayed in the rv park you spoke of. LOVED it! They towed their 28 foot travel trailer behind a F150 ecoboost. They did mess up their insurance one year when they did not hand in their permit on the way out(back to the US and Canada) and when they went back the next time, it was a hassle. Their mistake though, and they have had no other issues... just a long, long drive.

    Sonoyta is the border town to Puerto Penasco on the Sea of Cortez. This is a "Hassle Free Zone" which means you permits are not required. 1 hour from Lukeville, AZ to the beach. Approx 3.5 - 4 hours from Phoenix to beach.

    I live in AZ. Been through there a lot. Currently looking at RV's. A coworker goes very often with his 1500 and 5th wheel/slideouts. Nogales will not give you a hard time, if you drive safe. They want tourists in Rocky Point. The security going in is light to none, getting back into the US is much more stringent.

      From what I understand there are still issues at the border. It's been suggested that people buy their permit online. There's a Facebook group RV Mexico that they talk about this. Some people have had no problems while others do - it depends on the border crossing they choose. I would look up Mexico Mike as well to get up to date information. I trust what he says. If I learn more I'll update again. Thanks.

    I drove my 11,000 lb Class C Chevy 1 ton motorhome across the San Luis De Rios border last week to go to the veterinarian. No papers needed at all. They just waved me in basically even seeing my little dogs. I drove al the way to the Gulf that day too. Getting back in was a different story. I took the express lane by mistake and they 'punished' me by doing a full inspection.

    • @Roamingrv
      @Roamingrv  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You may already be aware of this, but no import permit is required for Baja, Mexico. At least that was the case in 2014, our last visit to Mexico. My thought being, if you were denied a permit, you could spend the winter on the Baja.

    Hi; thanks for the information. I am building a very large RV and towing it with a Volvo highway tractor... we have Mexico on our plans, but this issue makes me nervous. Registered in Alberta, so as you say, no GVW, but it looks like a semi, because it was a semi... now registered in AB as a motorhome, and the former 53' commercial trailer is now a "travel trailer"... because of the potential of having the Mexican government confiscate my rig because someone below the boarder decided that it was commercial because it once was... very uneasy about this. Other comments I have seen indicate that if the truck is never un-hooked from the trailer it is one unit, if you go to town with just the truck, then you have an unregistered commercial vehicle and it will be seized.
    I think i need a letter from the Mexican Consulate making it official one way or the other. Know before you go!
    Thanks, stay safe.

    Maybe this is just an old video but thousands of people take their RV and 5th wheels to Mexico every year. I’m confused about your statement of weight limits and such. Maybe it’s a good idea to get multiple resources before giving up on travel to other countries?

    • @Roamingrv
      @Roamingrv  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John,
      Yes this video is 2 years old but the information is current. Yes, thousands do take their RVs into Mexico and many have no problems at all. However, there is a law that the Mexican authorities use when they want that concerns the weights of trucks pulling the RVs. What I am trying to do is to bring an awareness of this to anyone who is considering traveling to Mexico in their RV. I agree that giving up the potential travel should not be done because of just one thing. Unfortunately it came down to a multitude of things that caused us not to travel. However, I do not tell people to not travel to Mexico because I would travel there in a heart beat if I could. Personal reasons at the moment do not allow it - my husbands health. If you are considering taking your RV to Mexico then do it but just be aware of potential problems and know how to avoid them. Safe travels.

    I crossed the border last January and I paid about $400 it is a rv class A diesel with a 12 foot inclose trailer, the permit its for 10 years and inside the trailer I have my golf gti vw that got a permit just for 6 months. but as I know all trailers attached to rv's get a permit for 10 years, like the rv's, any other vehicle can get a permit for 6 months, now importing will be paying the tax of the vehicle and importing fee so the it can stay in Mexico forever, it will become Mexican and no longer can use American plates, they will take your title and issue you a new Mexican one.
