  • Starting a nonprofit organization or thinking about it? Here are a few things you should do first to make sure you’re successful and can make a BIG impact! #Nonprofit #Entrepreneurship #SocialEnterprise
I now work full time for the 501c3 nonprofit I started many years ago and love seeing the social impact we make in our community as we grow. I get asked often about my experience starting a nonprofit and how others can start a charitable organization themselves. There is a lot that goes into it - from creating a business plan and fundraising strategy to measuring outcomes - and you’ll be better off if you start on some of these things before you even come up with the name for your organization!
If you are starting a nonprofit, thinking about it, or know someone who is trying to start a nonprofit, I hope this helps!

    A. Understand the need otherwise you won't know if your idea will address the need.
    1. Know your topic - read and meet experts
    2. Who is affected
    3. Root cause of the problem
    4. What issues are interconnected.
    B. Study the competition
    1. Check the ones in your community
    2. Focus on needs other than those with the same need.
    3. What would you need to do to end the need?
    4. Can you partner with other orgs?
    5. What are the gaps?
    C. Think through the business plan - needs to be financially sustainable that you can count on, to solve the problem. Grants are not the silver bullet.
    1. What - activities you'll undertake and how will you measure progress? Measure the outcomes and impacts. I.e. Benchmark progress.
    Eg surveys, numbers
    2. Fundraising piece eg charging for services, sponsorship etc.
    3. All other parts of a business plan.

I am a child of an addict, as I have gotten older, I have realized just how many children of addicts fall into the same lifestyle as their parents, especially in my community. Also, as a child, I felt alone most of the time as if I was the only one going through what I was going through. I want to start a non-profit to help children of addicts. I am currently trying to figure out how I am going to do this as well as measure impact. I am definitely still in the research stage of this, but I am very hopeful that my personal experience as a child of an addict and volunteering with other non-profits will give me a good baseline of knowledge. I’m in the beginning stages and just trying to learn all I can about the business side of the project. I went through my own addiction and know first had the need for something more where I live. I know my experiences in corrections and as an emt are probably unique, and I’m counting on them to reach people we haven’t been able to yet. I am no body. I run my own business, and have worked with and for several non profits before. Our project is actually quite large, and a bit countercultural for Americans, even though I am one, haha. Its basically a sustainable community that is built to also serve the larger community by meeting specific needs. It is going to be quite the endeavor, should be fun.

Thank you for making his video. I’ve recently been thinking about starting a non-profit tackling an aspect of the issue of homeless in my area. The idea is that youth would be able to volunteer to distribute items of necessity to people on the streets. It would help homeless people on a day to day basis, giving them warmth, food, water, toiletries. Hopefully eventually it would be able to help homeless people get jobs and get back on their feet. There are non-profits in my area dealing with this, however I think I can take a different approach. But I don’t know. I’m not sure if I should pursue this or just volunteer at the other organizations. I want to help!

Thank you for this video! I echo some of the comments below when I state that it is detailed and well put together. I took many notes. I am starting a nonprofit org and I am currently in the beginning stages of writing my business plan. My org will house those in need of transitional housing. I am still figuring out my exact target market but my research over the next few weeks will help me narrow it down. Thanks again for pointing out some important things to focus on!

I have a deep passion for community development and social impact. I'm actually thinking of going make my registration, however this awesome. These 3 key things to do indefinitely worths it. thanks a lot. I actually want to go into educational empowerment for children (Kindergarten) living in my community which has been isolated by the government for so many years. Been that I have a great love for children, It gave me a lot of concern seeing many kids some of which are my relatives not being in school. I will move further to research these key points for a clear understanding of the root causes

I'm not sure if starting a non-profit would be the best way to go about that but this helped give me some good background information for, if anything else, how to identify a problem to its root cause and things to think about before undergoing the work to help make the world better. @@AmberMelanieSmith For one thing, I've found that business-to-business sales (compared to nonprofit fundraising) is less personal and emotional in flavor and more focused on financial issues of the particular company you're selling to, more granular about measuring results, etc. But I think that the strategic guidance you provided in your video is almost universal - probably relevant to any venture - nonprofit or not.

Honestly - you'll never have everything perfectly planned (nobody can!). Same, my pup just got hit by a vehicle and his life was on the line. Over $10,000 in surgery, test and treatments. A rescue name Danny & Ron’s rescue helped me keep my pup and me together and paid for all his funds.
I found out that the shelter my pup ended up at was actually not the one he was supposed to go to. The shelter he was supposed to go to would’ve ended up euthanizing him as soon as he arrived due to his injuries. And that happens to 98% of dogs in my area.
Thus I wish to start a nonprofit shelter and rescue for dogs of all ages. I want to give dogs the opportunity to be as lucky as mine was. And hopefully start bonds or keeps strong bonds together like mine.
But I do not know where to start as a whole⁉️

Hello Amber, thank you so much for this video. I am currently in law school and live in Providence, RI. I found out that there is only one attorney in the state who works full-time with indigent families in Education Law. RI has become infamous for the lack of quality in its education. I am thinking of starting a non-profit when I graduate to address the dire need for representation for families to advocate for their children to receive the educational services they so desperately need. I know that this is addressing a huge need and has the potentially to be incredibly impactful, especially if part of the practice focuses on policy changes. However, I have no idea where to start. Thank you.

    • @AmberMelanieSmith
      @AmberMelanieSmith  ปีที่แล้ว

I think continued research is a great first step! You need to really get a sense of the landscape where you are. How many people are in need of this service? What are their current options and how would yours fill an unmet need? Are there other nonprofits also doing this and what do they do? I have a video all about putting together a nonprofit business plan that may help - check it out in my playlist!
