    I have been crocheting for 4 years. Experienced crocheters have just told me how to figure it all out. That was so discouraging to a beginner.
    Now I have a solid formula that will go into my binder that will be my master copy. A very huge heartfelt Thank you Tiffany 🎉

    Great information! I’ve been crocheting for years and still always wonder exactly how much yarn I need, and never really asked, just over bought or under buy! Thanks for sharing this information!

  • @guiltyhedonist
    @guiltyhedonist 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    This is great! The one problem with both of these methods is that it means you need to buy at least one "starter skein" before you know how much you will need. Some of us live 50 miles from where we can buy yarn or need to order online. So, either we may over or under-buy initially or will need to make another trip or wait on another order to be delivered to get the rest of the yarn - and run the danger of getting different dye lots. But this is great info! Thanks!

    • @CrochetWithTiffany
      @CrochetWithTiffany  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Totally understand your situation! Honestly the BEST way to figure out exactly how much yarn you will need it to make a swatch. I have a whole Swatch Series where I show you exactly how I figure out how many stitches, rows AND approximately how much yarn I will need for a blanket project just from a swatch. But no matter what, you will have to have some yarn on hand that matches the size of the yarn you will use to figure out how much yarn you will need. With so many yarns having different thicknesses, different amounts of yards in the skein, all the different patterns, different blanket sizes AND the different stitch tension one might have, it is just impossible to provide accurate information without sampling first. 🤷🏼‍♀️💖🧶

    I second what everyone said in the comments, I overthink and make it way more complicated than it is. Now I can confidently start a project. Thank you so very much 🥰

  • @grammy4255
    @grammy4255 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You made a comment about starting your foundation row using a larger size hook (one up). I've noticed that my foundation row tension is a bit tighter than the rest & this should help me immensely. So often I just fly by the seat of my pants with a project.
    I just started crocheting this past December(2021). I've always admired items I've seen & FINALLY said "enough" & started watching TH-cam to teach myself the basics. I can't tell you how much I enjoy this art. I also have been working on loom knitting for 4+ years yet lately I've been doing more crochet projects than loom kintting. Every project, though not perfect, has taught me so much to apply toward another project. Thank you!

    Well done Tiffany and thanks. You put in so much effort! Makes sense...once u decide what yarn you like, all you need is the label criteria and then go buy all the yarn in the same dye lot. Pretty easy!

    Tiffany gracias. This will help me in the future. Sometimes I have to frog a whole blanket because I make it too long and I do not have enough yarn to finish. Now I try to make them smaller and start the border with the same yarn. If it is not big enough I used colors to make them bigger. I order yarn on sale with no specific project in mind. Most of my creations are for donations and at the same time, I learned different patterns. Every time I am ordering yarn my honey tells me "Make sure you buy extra, I do not want to hear, I do not have enough to finish this project". LOL. This video will be very helpful, thank you. Papa Dios te bendiga.

    Hi Tiffany! thank you for the formula to figure this out, my only question now is how many to buy before using the one skein of yarn to do the calculations and still get all you need so it in the same dye lot number?

    But that means you already bought the yarn! Otherwise dye lots may not match. So you'll either have to guess ahead of time to make sure they all match or go back out and buy it hoping to find the same dye lot...

    • @Lexxie45
      @Lexxie45 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly! Sometimes I browse in the store and check out what's on sale. If I don't buy enough yarn right then and there , it would be gone by the time I finish my 1 skein sample and come back to buy the rest. OR. What about online yarn buying? You have no way of figuring out anything until you actually get that yarn in your hands. OR. Corner to corner blankets. That pattern doesn't work with this math.

    • @CrochetWithTiffany
      @CrochetWithTiffany  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lexxie45. Try what I mentioned to Golden Gryphon if you are concerned about dye lot or quantity available. You are correct, this formula does not work with a C2C blanket because C2C blankets are worked diagonally and also vary in their dimensions. I will be working on the math for that to help people out. 😊🧡🧶

    So I have to make the blanket in order to find out how many skeins I need to make the blanket, hmmmm. I am not a newbie but by far not a pro but this seems a waste of time and yarn. The 4x4 swatch seems to be easier, less time consuming, & no yarn consumption.
    However, not everybody uses the same methods so I can appreciate how you have presented a different alternative method for all of us.

    I used one ball to start my sugarplum blanket (although I'm using grey, not very sugarplum 😄 ), did the width I wanted and then kept going until I'd used up the ball... then I measured and ordered the amount I needed to finish. I think I'll stick to using proper dimensions in future, to make my life easier. Sometimes you don't want 9 million balls of leftover yarn (right? 👀😄 )

    This is great, thank you! Not what I was looking for, but helpful for future reference. I was looking to determine yarn/skein amount before buying the yarn so I get all the same lot and color (changing pattern size 3 yarn to use size 6 yarn instead).

    • @CrochetWithTiffany
      @CrochetWithTiffany  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Gotcha! To figure this out you will need to have a yarn on hand that is the same size yarn you want to use on your project. For the most accurate numbers you will need to work up a swatch. Something small. This swatch will give you all the numbers you will need before you begin your blanket project. But, unless you have a yarn that is the same size as what you want to buy a bunch of, it is virtually impossible to give you accurate information. Just way to many variables. To help you out I did make a swatch series you can find on my playlist! It walks you through how I find all the different blanket size information to add to my patterns. My little secret sauce if you will.
      Definitely check it out! 🤗💖🧶

    Hi Tiffany! I had to chuckle when you said you make your blankets too big. I am the complete opposite, I always make them too small! One of my first blankets I made for my niece turned out wonderful and she loved it, but she very sweetly asked, “Aunt Marsha, I really love my blanket, but could you make one wide enough for a ‘regular’ sized person?” Being the shortest (and overall smaller) person in the family, I ALWAYS get the length correct, but the width, not so much. 😂😂😂

    But what if you want to buy all the yarn up front? Also, what I was hoping for is a chart that says: Mandala yarn skein - double crochet - 5.5 hook - 2 square feet, Premier Coffee Shop skein - double crochet - 4.0 hook - 3 square feet. And so on for every kind of yarn I like. Perchance, you got that info? Like maybe in an excel table? And including a couple sized hooks and few different stitches for each type of skein? That would be sweet.

      Hi Mandalyn! It is absolutely ok if you purchase your yarn up front to make sure that you have the same dye lot number and that they don't run out of the color you want to use. Then go home, work out how much you will actually need to make the blanket you desire and then return any extra skeins that you do not need. That is totally fine!
      Oh Goodness, ya, a chart like that would be so much work. I'm talking a full 100-200 page book. There are so many different kinds of yarn, there are now 7 different yarn sizes (8 if you include the size 0 yarn). I just saw a chart showing something like 15 different crochet hook sizes. Not to mention now all of the possible dimensions. You are literally asking for a document with approximately 357,000 variations. And that is me estimating only 200 different yarn skeins. That is why I came up with this strategy so that you can figure out the math for the exact Yarn you want to use, using the Pattern that you to use, with the exact Hook you plan on using and the exact Size you want to make. It's super easy and gives you exactly what you need. 😊🧡🧶
